Grant77 Old-Timey Member Posted August 31, 2020 Posted August 31, 2020 They got him from the Diamondbacks, not the Orioles. If we're talking bad pitching, the red sox are well on their way to the worst pitching staff in the history of baseball by fWAR.
Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted August 31, 2020 Posted August 31, 2020 Looks like the Dbacks are sending us 300k as part of the deal It's like Atkins asked them to pay for their hand sanitizer and face mask budget for the season...

THANOS Old-Timey Member Posted August 31, 2020 Posted August 31, 2020 Came in here to post that it reminds me of the Liriano acquisition. I wonder what role they have in mind? He's an absolute dumpster fire right now, and there isn't much time to get him right. Not a lot of time in a shortened season, but ideally, Pete Walker works on his delivery, and then he follows an opener on his pitching days to let him work against the lower part of the opposing lineup. Optimal outcome is they can figure out his control in time for the playoffs. Could also use him like Andrew Miller? Still need to have average command though lol.

You know what Grant? I'll let you have this one, cause you actually aren't exaggerating this time.

Maahfaace Verified Member Posted August 31, 2020 Posted August 31, 2020 he moved to a much shorter arm motion this year (ala Joe Kelly, Trevor Bauer).....obviously it isn't working. Anyone know if he's gone back to his previous motion? Not that smartest decision entering FA one would think....
BlueRocky Old-Timey Member Posted August 31, 2020 Posted August 31, 2020 Robbie Ray is Patrick Corbin if the latter had 30 control. We were already comfortable with losing Bergen last season and even after getting him back from the Giants we used him for 1 inning. This is a great acquisition, costs us nothing and gives us a guy with good upside who can slot into the bullpen as a lights out lefty if he still has trouble during his starts. Robbie Ray isn’t a good strike-thrower, but Vogt hasn’t been a good defensive catcher either. Moving to a playoff environment with top notch defensive catchers should help his numbers a bit. He just has to throw strikes. He’s a rotation arm, they didn’t acquire him to be a lefty reliever for those wondering.
z3r0s Old-Timey Member Posted August 31, 2020 Posted August 31, 2020 You can always hope for a little 'inside track' juice when he reaches free agency, if he likes the clubhouse/org.

connorp Old-Timey Member Posted August 31, 2020 Posted August 31, 2020 This is the type of high-variance, no-cost acquisition that makes sense to me. Depends what kind of leash he gets if he still can’t throw strikes. Cost could be games. 31IP is a lot of IP to still be averaging 9bb/9.

Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted August 31, 2020 Posted August 31, 2020 7.84 ERA 2.00 WHIP 31 walks in 31 innings how much worse does it get? We get it. You don't like the trade and have little to no concept of why the Jays would make a low risk, high reward move like this. It's pretty evident to everyone (except you) that there's a very high probability that Ray sucks and doesn't help the team this year. However, there's also a chance he regains previous form and can really help them down the stretch and into the playoffs. At the cost of Travis Bergen, this is a risk you take.

Nobody is going to argue that he's having a good season, but he's a historically good pitcher. You're talking about a sample size of 31 innings this year, vs ~820 innings in his career.
connorp Old-Timey Member Posted August 31, 2020 Posted August 31, 2020 I was hoping for Gausman for cheap if not Bundy but i read he was possibly playing the COVID card lol. players can opt out whenever they want this year so it’s basically like having a free no trade clause.

With a good bullpen and guys who can go long like Merryweather, Kay, Hatch, Gooch, etc. the leash on Ray should be short.
Krylian Old-Timey Member Posted August 31, 2020 Posted August 31, 2020 7.84 ERA 2.00 WHIP 31 walks in 31 innings how much worse does it get? But he had 790 Major League innings before this season, where many of them were quite dominant. Are we saying that these 31 innings are the real Robbie Ray and the previous 790 were just a mirage?
LGBJ29 Verified Member Posted August 31, 2020 Posted August 31, 2020 For those asking, looks like Ray has gone back to his old mechanics.

Meanwhile the Padres trade for Clevinger.. the difference between a team actually going for it and a team that will be happy if they secure the final playoff berth

Everyone here knows what Ray is: a starter with good stuff who has been good in the past and one of the worst pitchers in baseball this year. They're taking a flier on guy hoping to catch lightning in a bottle. They gave up next to nothing for him. It might work. It probably won't. Pointing out that he's been bad isn't interesting - we all know. Whining that you prefer Clevinger isn't interesting - we don't care.
TheDragon Verified Member Posted August 31, 2020 Posted August 31, 2020 To state the obvious: If he hasn't completely figured out his control issues by playoff time I don't want to see him on the mound in any playoff games... better yet just keep him off the roster
Krylian Old-Timey Member Posted August 31, 2020 Posted August 31, 2020 Career era 4.25 career whip 1.375 if that's dominant to you your standards are pretty low. I also see a career K rate of 11.1/9. That's a lot of swing and miss stuff. BB rate this year is 9/9. Career is 4.2/9. So this season it's more than doubled. You think his previous 5 seasons were outliers and this is the true representation? Most believe that Ray is Jekyll and Hyde...but you think he's only Mr. Hyde.

You need pitchers who can do what Robbie Ray has historically been able to do, you are never going to get a rotation of 5 guys with 200 IP and sub 3 ERAs/FIPs. Ray's probably a solid #3 on most teams, and is probably better than 2 of the guys we currently have in our injury plagued rotation.
