connorp Old-Timey Member Posted August 31, 2020 Posted August 31, 2020 Basically former intriguing spects that have lost their luster
Grant77 Old-Timey Member Posted August 31, 2020 Posted August 31, 2020 Minor is like Villar. Potential to be a real game changer for a low price. However, the probability of that is probably only in the 25% range. I'm perfectly happy of the team takes that kind of gamble. If you get a few 6IP, 3 ER starts from Minor and have a lefty in the 'pen for the playoffs then so be it. If he's more like the 2019 version then that's a huge win. I don't think we should be trading our top prospects right now.
Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted August 31, 2020 Posted August 31, 2020 Naylor, Arias, and Quantrill main pieces? If that was the return I would be pissed. Jays could have easily topped that.
Pendleton Old-Timey Member Posted August 31, 2020 Posted August 31, 2020 Naylor, Arias, and Quantrill main pieces? Swap out Naylor for Campusano or one of their other better prospects and that seems more likely to me.
Laika Community Moderator Posted August 31, 2020 Posted August 31, 2020 Clevinger + Greg Allen + PTBNL for Naylor + Quantrill + Arias + Joey Cantillo + Hedges + Owen Miller
connorp Old-Timey Member Posted August 31, 2020 Posted August 31, 2020 If that was the return I would be pissed. Jays could have easily topped that. You’d think like Martinez + Kloff + would be a little better and I’d do that for sure
Grant77 Old-Timey Member Posted August 31, 2020 Posted August 31, 2020 Quantrill has all of the tools to be the next frontline starter that the Indians develop. I'm happy to see him go there if the rumours are true.
Slade Old-Timey Member Posted August 31, 2020 Posted August 31, 2020 That's a pretty great deal for the Indians.

Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted August 31, 2020 Posted August 31, 2020 Josh Naylor recently transformed his body. He was fatter than Vlad and now he’s thin and looks athletic. That adjustment period would be extreme getting use to. Still has some intrigue for me. Quantril is probably going to be a good reliever for years like his father. Bust as a Starter but many do. Maybe Cleveland can fix him though.
saskjayfan Old-Timey Member Posted August 31, 2020 Posted August 31, 2020 I think Minor does move the needle. He's coming off of a season over 4 WAR with Cy Young votes. We grab a few cheap starts from him and then we have another solid lefty in the bullpen for the playoffs. I think it's a big win if we get him for cheap. All of those free agent pitchers and Realmuto will still be there in the offseason whether we have Lance Lynn or not. Minor's FIP the last 3 years is 4.4ish. Lynn's is 3.5. If I'm going to go cheaper, I'd rather roll the dice on Bundy. He's always had plus stuff. He may have actually figured something out this year. If I couldn't get Bundy or Lynn I'd just pass on Minor and try and upgrade 3rd base.
Grant77 Old-Timey Member Posted August 31, 2020 Posted August 31, 2020 Clevinger + Greg Allen + PTBNL for Naylor + Quantrill + Arias + Joey Cantillo + Hedges + Owen Miller So for us that's something like Gurriel, Manoah, Martinez, Kloffenstein, Jansen, and Hiraldo.
saskjayfan Old-Timey Member Posted August 31, 2020 Posted August 31, 2020 Clevinger + Greg Allen + PTBNL for Naylor + Quantrill + Arias + Joey Cantillo + Hedges + Owen Miller Those Padres are spending and making the market more expensive....lol
saskjayfan Old-Timey Member Posted August 31, 2020 Posted August 31, 2020 So for us that's something like Gurriel, Manoah, Martinez, Kloffenstein, Jansen, and Hiraldo. I'm way more aggressive and willing to spend prospect capital, but that's gross. Even I wouldn't do that.

We're kind of basing opinions on a price that we don't know, but I don't imagine the Angel's would be letting Bubdy go for cheap. They still want to contend next year as well. I'm thinking Minor goes for salary relief and a lottery ticket, but if that's not the case then I would pass on him as well.

I don't disagree, but Bundy is under control for next year so he's going to cost a lot more than Minor.

Yeah they did give up a lot of quantity rather than high-end quality. So that will prob split the lines between who likes it and doesn’t

I could be talked into to Bundy, but you're right. Without knowing the asking price for Bundy or Lynn it's tough to really say what to do until they are traded and you basically know the price. Clevinger's price was way to rich for my blood.
Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted August 31, 2020 Posted August 31, 2020 Padres are over spending on every deal it doesn’t mean every team will. This is just a prime of example of how important it is to build a great farm system. Not only for cycling in new talent regularly but being able to make trades like this without feeling your entire future is mortgaged.
BlueRocky Old-Timey Member Posted August 31, 2020 Posted August 31, 2020 So for us that's something like Gurriel, Manoah, Martinez, Kloffenstein, Jansen, and Hiraldo. Jansen > Hedges Gurriel > Naylor Kloff = Cantillo Hiraldo < Arias Martinez > Miller Manoah < Quantrill (kinda)
Slade Old-Timey Member Posted August 31, 2020 Posted August 31, 2020 Some of you guys write off prospects as "failed" way too early. I would of thrown up if the Jays offered something similar to the package the Indians just got.
Orgfiller Old-Timey Member Posted August 31, 2020 Posted August 31, 2020 Jansen > Hedges Gurriel > Naylor Cantillo = Kloff Hiraldo < Arias Martinez > Miller Manoah < Quantrill (kinda) Cantillo > Kloff in present value, probably for a couple more years too. Manoah > Quantrill easily. The Blue Jays laugh if that was an actual offer.

There's a good chance that at least a couple of these players become better than expected.

Their top prospect Tatis jr is in the MLB, made a bunch of trades, and still have 5 top 100 prospects. Insane.
Laika Community Moderator Posted August 31, 2020 Posted August 31, 2020 So for us that's something like Gurriel, Manoah, Martinez, Kloffenstein, Jansen, and Hiraldo. I think a couple of those comps are a bit fat but maybe I am biased. Jansen >> Hedges (control) Gurriel > Naylor (talent) Manoah > Quantrill Arias = Orelvis Cantillo > Kloffenstein I don't actually know enough about Owen Miller to even try to compare him to Miguel Hiraldo. If you change Jansen to McGuire then the list might be pretty close in total value. But still might be too heavy on Toronto's side.
Olerud363 Old-Timey Member Posted August 31, 2020 Posted August 31, 2020 So for us that's something like Gurriel, Manoah, Martinez, Kloffenstein, Jansen, and Hiraldo. Four high ceiling teenagers and 2 high ceiling 25 year olds?? That seems crazy. I don't know if I've seen a trade with multiple high ceiling teenagers going the other way. Seems to me every player the Padres traded is like the 2 year floor of the ones you suggested. Like the trade would make sense if all these players stagnate for a couple years and their value is down.
BlueRocky Old-Timey Member Posted August 31, 2020 Posted August 31, 2020 I debated, but Quantrill was BA #52 in 2018. Manoah hasn’t made the list yet. We’re being a little biased here.

I would of thrown up if the Jays offered something similar to the package the Indians just got. The Padres also have the deepest farm system in baseball by a fairly wide margin and lots of those guys are being blocked by better players. They can afford to lose those guys without blinking twice. I'd agree its a much harder deal to swallow for basically any other team. It probably explains why many of us are so underwhelmed by the initial return for Clevinger

I don't know if the Indians would deal Quantrill for Manoah though. At the very least it would be close. He was a higher ranked prospect and just hasn't been utilized properly by the Padres. The elite stuff is still there for him.
