I'll say this with the caveat Vlad frustrates me to no end. I think the overall issue with the guy is people continue to think he is someone he's not. All of us should probably stop waiting for him to be the next Miguel Cabrera and accept he is more likely Paul Konerko or Jason Giambi.

Yeah but there are reasons for those expectations. #1 prospect, legendary MiLB hitter, already had a near MVP, 6 win season, the projections, the hard hit data, the HR derby performances.

Why do people keep waiting for him to be the guy he was for 3 to 4 months while playing half of his games in minor league ballparks? For the vast majority of his career he has been disappointing relative to his raw talent. He's an okay hitter, he's not the generational talent people keep hoping him to be, probably because he doesn't have the work ethic or desire to get there.

 

He may be one of those guys that will go elsewhere and suddenly put it all together when he finally matures.

 

Vlad is still very young so I wouldn’t rule out him becoming a great hitter someday but it does feel like if it ever happens it will probably be for another organization. This is year 6 for him now and the Jays have not been able to get the most out of him other than in 2021 which had a bunch of caveats. My prediction for Vlad has always been that he will have an absolutely monster 2025 season right as he hits free agency and I’m sticking to that. We just have to hope he figures something out before then. I think if he’s 2022 Vlad in 2024 then it would still be disappointing relative to expectations but not a terrible outcome. A repeat of 2023 Vlad would be horrendous obviously.

I don't have a strong enough opinion of his defense to really care either way. But he likes playing defense, almost certainly considers himself a stellar defender (reinforced by the gold glove), and would probably be very publicly upset about being taken out of the field less than two years before free agency. There's no way the team picks that fight, especially without a clear alternative in place. And I don't really blame them.

Because someone who since the beginning of 2022 has posted only 3.1 fWAR in 1111 PA at 1B (1.6 fWAR per 600 PA) compared to 0.9 fWAR in 298 PA at DH (1.8 fWAR per 600 PA) does not strike me as what you are describing. If anything, the opposite.

 

If I make the sample only since the beginning of 2023, it's 0.5 fWAR in 551 PA at 1B (still 0.5 fWAR per 600 PA) compared to 0.6 fWAR in 155 PA at DH (2.3 fWAR per 600)

All great choices. Taking a lady there as a first date is a great way to test the waters. After Swiss Chalet, take them home to watch Conan the Barbarian and you'll have a good idea if they're a keeper or not.
