Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted June 17, 2020 Posted June 17, 2020 Playoffs are too big of a money maker and I have given up on thinking leagues will keep them smaller. Sadly it also probably grows the sport. Do we see the NFL following suit and letting more teams in too?
Bobthe4th Old-Timey Member Posted June 17, 2020 Posted June 17, 2020 Unless and until we have a few more expansion teams, 6 per league is the most I'd want in a normal season. Any more and you'd start to get too many average teams getting in IMO.
BlueRocky Old-Timey Member Posted June 17, 2020 Posted June 17, 2020 These were the postseason teams in 2019: American League: 1. Astros (107-55) 2. Yankees (103-59) 3. Twins (101-61) 4. Athletics (97-65) WC 5. Rays (96-66) WC National League: 1. Dodgers (106-56) 2. Braves (97-65) 3. Nationals (93-69) WC 4. Cardinals (91-71) 5. Brewers (89-73) WC If we expanded to 8 teams on each league, these teams would’ve also made the postseason (assuming it’s based on record and not 2 teams per division): American League: 6. Cleveland (93-69) 7. Red Sox (84-78) 8. Rangers (78-84) National League: 6. Mets (86-76) 7. Diamondbacks (85-77) 8. Cubs (84-78)
glory Old-Timey Member Posted June 17, 2020 Posted June 17, 2020 I thought expanded playoffs would be 14 teams? I think 16 playoff teams in a 30 team league is too much. If they add 2 expansion teams, then 16 is more tolerable, but I think expanded in the current format should be 14. The rumor from a few months ago was 7 teams in each league, the top seed in each league getting a bye, the 6 remaining teams in each league playing 3 game wild cards to determine the DS, and the higher seeded teams choosing their opponents. That seems convoluted in some ways, but better than 16 out of 30 making it.
BlueRocky Old-Timey Member Posted June 17, 2020 Posted June 17, 2020 16 does feel a bit much and we enter the territory where one team may squeak in with an under .500 record. I think if the new landscape is 14 playoff teams, and 82-84 wins is the target to make the postseason, a lot more teams will be competing in August and buying at the deadline. Right now the expectation is around 90 wins just to taste a wildcard spot, which is a far reach for a lot of clubs and not worth it.

Yeah, looking at the standings you posted, the 14 team playoff format would have included Boston (84 wins) and Arizona (85 wins). Those are average or slightly above average teams making it, but I could live with that. I believe the format I mentioned above, which Trevor Bauer took a giant s*** on, would have made the playoffs in 2019 look like this: AL 1. Astros (107-55) - bye ---- 2. Yankees (103-59) 3. Twins (101-61) 4. Athletics (97-65) WC 5. Rays (96-66) WC 6. Cleveland (93-69) 7. Red Sox (84-78) Yankees and Twins get to choose their opponent in the Wild Card games, let's say Yanks pick Boston and Twins pick Cleveland, so the A's would play the Rays. All of those series would be 3 games, and winners advance to the DS with Houston already in. Same applies in the NL. Or they can scrap the "higher seed picks opponent" gimmick and just have 2-7, 3-6, and 4-5 match ups, which is how most teams would probably choose anyway. Then again, if the season is only going to be 60-66 games long, then going with 16 teams just for this season wouldn't be terrible. There will no doubt be a good team who starts off slowly and ends up being average or worse after the season is over, so more than half the teams making it just for 2020 might be more reasonable.
Slade Old-Timey Member Posted June 17, 2020 Posted June 17, 2020 MLBPA keeps losing, they better get their s*** together and really figure out what they want in the next CBA because the owners are thinking 5 moves ahead and keep getting everything they want.
Barkerfan23 Verified Member Posted June 18, 2020 Posted June 18, 2020 16 playoffs teams!!! Nba and nhl style
Deadpool Old-Timey Member Posted June 18, 2020 Posted June 18, 2020 16 playoffs teams!!! Nba and nhl style I thought we frowned on the "everybody gets a trophy" mentality?
glory Old-Timey Member Posted June 18, 2020 Posted June 18, 2020 My guess is they will settle at 66 games like Rosenthal suggested, which would be 40% of the season and players getting full prorated salaries.

Spanky__99 Old-Timey Member Posted June 18, 2020 Posted June 18, 2020 The owners wanted this too, mate!

Abomination Old-Timey Member Posted June 18, 2020 Posted June 18, 2020 IMO the PLAYERS should be allowed to sell one small patch space (if not on the uniform, then maybe on the glove or bat). Let the club sell space on the base bags or something.

Just to summarize some of the negotiation points since March: Players get: - Increased fully pro-rated salary from 48 (agreed in March) to 60-70 (proposed), earning @40% of their total regular contract. - Guaranteed service time as per last season - Postseason pool money IF season finishes and world series is played - Risk of contracting COVID daily while being subjected to rigorous and extensive testing and safety protocols Owners get: - 2020 MLB Draft cut to 5 rounds to save money - Unlimited 20K UDFA signings (RIP) - 2021 MLB Draft cut to 20 rounds to save money - MLB Draft bonus only 100K payable in 2020, rest is deferred to 2021 & 2022, to help cash flow - IFA postponed until Jan 2021 for further money deferral - Expanded postseason for 2020 & 2021 with 16 playoff team format to recover revenue due to shortened season (this will likely be permanent going forward) - Universal DH for 2020 & 2021 (also permanent) - Rights to sell advertising on all MLB uniforms (also permanent) - Opening day July 15-20 - World Series ends late October - Geographic schedules (July 19-Sep 28) - MLBPA grievance waiver - Lube included Edited June 18, 2020 by BlueRocky

glory Old-Timey Member Posted June 19, 2020 Posted June 19, 2020 RIP Baseball Players in every sport are going to test positive. They either have to figure out a way to work around it without shutting the season down or don't start it back up at all.
max silver Old-Timey Member Posted June 19, 2020 Posted June 19, 2020 RIP Baseball This shows how tenuous the situation is with having baseball at all this season, both spring training states of Florida and Arizona are having sharp increases in coronavirus cases recently.

Deadpool Old-Timey Member Posted June 19, 2020 Posted June 19, 2020 This is another thing that many of you aren't considering... "Awating results". I had a test a couple of months ago and it takes ~3 days to get the results (no Covid for me, but a severe bacterial lung infection that's caused issues with my internal organs, and I'm still barely functional....)

Odds MLB players get their tests results quicker than Deadpool? Probably pretty high
TheHurl Site Manager Posted June 19, 2020 Posted June 19, 2020 PGA Golf had a positive test mid tournament today and they went on. They made sure everyone who needed to know, was informed and then will hold a zoom call tonight to debrief. Will be interesting to see if anyone else from the tournament tests positive now.

Probably pretty high "The Blue Jays player exhibiting the symptoms is a pitcher on the 40-man roster... He has been tested for COVID-19 and is awaiting results." I mean, unless that tweet was sent moments after the test, apparently they're waiting too...
