EastCoaster Verified Member Posted March 12, 2020 Posted March 12, 2020 What are the chances that the MLB will follow suit like the NBA and suspend the 2020 season over Covid -19 epidemic. Some places in the US has already have measures in place to stop large gathering of people as the predictions of health experts claims it will get much worst before it gets better the safety of their players has to come to mind.
Todd Verified Member Posted March 12, 2020 Posted March 12, 2020 Could be days, hours or weeks before they decide. Season starts in two weeks i believe.
Sorrow Verified Member Posted March 12, 2020 Posted March 12, 2020 I doubt they suspend the full season but I wouldn't be surprised to see it delayed by a month or two.
glory Old-Timey Member Posted March 12, 2020 Posted March 12, 2020 If it's not 100% chance, then it's damn close. The problem is that baseball can't extend the season into November/December without weather playing a huge part. The NBA can realistically suspend the season for two months and just end the playoffs in August once they resume, and it wouldn't make a difference for them. In baseball, if you start the season in June, and have to end it two months later to get all the games in, it will be a disaster. They would have to eat up the revenue loss by eliminating the scheduled games in April and possibly May (depending on how long this scare lasts) and then play a shortened season. That's why I can understand Manfred trying to prolong this as long as he can, but it will ultimately fail. Spring training games will probably be shut down soon, and Opening Day likely pushed back. How far back is the question. Between this and a potential lockout after 2021, our six years with Vlad/Bo/Biggio might seem a lot shorter.
max silver Old-Timey Member Posted March 12, 2020 Posted March 12, 2020 It seems inevitable that the season is at least going to be delayed if not outright cancelled. All the ingredients are in place for a massive outbreak of Covid-19 south of the Canada/US border. There was a delay in rolling out testing which subsequently means a delay in identifying and quarantining infected patients from the general population. Large scale public gatherings are likely to disappear very soon for awhile so no crowds means greatly reduced revenue for owners. How long they would have the appetite to try to play with no fans in the stands remains to be seen. And even with no fans in the stands once Covid starts hitting the player population at large that could easily mean suspensions of all major sports leagues in North America. The NBA is suspending their season is likely just the start of what we are going to see with the major sports.
Beans Verified Member Posted March 12, 2020 Posted March 12, 2020 Seattle has already said the Mariners won’t play their season-opening series at home. It’s only a matter of time...
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted March 12, 2020 Posted March 12, 2020 Cancel the season? No way, a shortened season is highly possible, but not a cancellation.
BTS Community Moderator Posted March 12, 2020 Posted March 12, 2020 At this point, no games for the foreseeable future will be played in front of more than a few hundred fans. MLB will try to maintain TV revenues by playing in empty stadiums or ST parks. I hope they're successful, but I have no idea how they'll handle situations where players start getting sick. Seems likely the season will be delayed/shortened.
glory Old-Timey Member Posted March 12, 2020 Posted March 12, 2020 They will probably try empty stadium games as long as no player comes down with it. That seems like a huge long shot, but that's probably their only hope to have the season start on time.

More likely is they play the season in ST facilities.

DigitalRock Old-Timey Member Posted March 12, 2020 Posted March 12, 2020 The chances are 100%.....it is going to happen and very soon. How long depends on how we deal with the virus.

max silver Old-Timey Member Posted March 12, 2020 Posted March 12, 2020 It's looking like spring training is likely to be suspended later today.
Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted March 12, 2020 Posted March 12, 2020 (edited) MLB has shutdown all operations starting this late afternoon. According to James Duthie on TSN. Edited March 12, 2020 by Spanky99
glory Old-Timey Member Posted March 12, 2020 Posted March 12, 2020 Inevitable, but still sucks. Hopefully games can still begin some time in late April or May. No basketball, no baseball. Damn, we're going to have to spend time with our wives/spouses now.

Damn, we're going to have to spend time with our wives/spouses now. Spring training is only half way through. If it's shutting down, it'll probably take a minimum of 3 weeks to a month to begin playing once they make that decision. Since things are likely to get worse over the next month or so, I can't see regular season games being played before June.
EastCoaster Verified Member Posted March 12, 2020 Author Posted March 12, 2020 This was to be expected and surely could put the whole season in jeopardy now with ST shut down. Then one would think before any team would be ready to play they would need to ramp up the players back to game shape which could take a while. Right now spring training is 37 days long now it's shut down if the stoppage last for two or 3 months then try to restart ST then the season you could look at late July or August before they are ready to play the first ballgame. Now the first case of Covid 19 was reported in China on Dec 31 2019 we are in March that's almost 3 month to try contain this virus we are just now seeing some case here take 3 months off any baseball season. I'd have to say right it doesn't look good for baseball this season
Beans Verified Member Posted March 12, 2020 Posted March 12, 2020 Even though I saw this coming, it’s still a shock (and a bummer).

max silver Old-Timey Member Posted March 12, 2020 Posted March 12, 2020 Yeah, it's very surreal and a shame. The whole thing has started to feel very real to me the last few days. On Tim and Sid yesterday they sort of predicted what was likely going to happen, in that seasons would be shut down completely as soon as a player were to test positive. Sure enough one NBA player initially tested positive and here we are. I can't say I've ever had to go through anything like this before, it's a bit frightening dealing with the unknown of how the Coronavirus outbreak is going to unfold.
