The Blue Jays announced that Gurriel could see some playing time at firstbase this season. This look like an indication that they are ready to give Anthony Alford a real good look before making a decision on his future as he's out of options. Alford was touted as highly talent athlete both in football and baseball to the extent that the scouts had projected him first round talent if he would've committed only to baseball instead of still pursing football. Injuries caused his setbacks now healthy I believe the Blue Jays are going to give him a chance. The only draw back it pushes Rowdy Tellez out of the picture for the time being he still has option I wouldn't be surprise if Tellez start this season in the minors.

Don't forget about Derek Fisher.

He might surprise you with the bat. We will see.

After 8 years of frustration (first college football, then all the injuries), it would be very satisfying to see him put something together. And so I hope he does well in the end.

It's good to diversify LGJ's skillset but without another right-handed bat I don't know how much it helps to platoon him there against lefties. Shaw goes to the bench and then what are the options to replace LGJ in LF? Fisher as a bench OF comes to mind but he's a lefty.

Flexibility for the impossible dream scenario where Alford doesn’t bust

Don't forget Fisher crushed LHP last year (and was awful vs. RHP). SSS, but nonetheless, something to consider.

Well you consider it until you realize the sample size was too small to make it in any way relevant, and then you stop considering it!

(Fisher will project to have a normal platoon profile)

I thought Shaw was promised the 1B job? Unless they’re planning on Shaw splitting time between 1B and 3B, and having Vlad DH more

That's probably Alford for now, but I'm sure that the outfield mix is going to change a lot in the coming seasons.

Just because we're thinking of giving Gurriel some reps at first doesn't necessarily guarantee he's going to be a platoon there. It's just added flexibility, he might play the odd game there if he's hitting well and you want his bat in the lineup at the same time that someone in the outfield is playing well (e.g. Alford) and you want to give Vlad or Shaw the day off.

The only way I really see this becoming more than an occasional thing is if one of either Fisher or Alford ends up breaking out, as that suddenly creates more talented players deserving of playing time than there is available time to go around. Definitely a good problem to have, even if it's unlikely to happen.

He won't, he is one of the most over rated Jays in the system with holes in his bat worse than Eric Thames

What a weird comparison. Thames' issue was not and has never really been his bat, but rather his abysmal defense. Thames tore up minor league pitching pretty consistently, albeit at unremarkable prospecty ages.

Yeah for sure, if you combined Eric Thames bat with Anthony Alford's defense and base-running you would potentially end up with a borderline star.

The guy is strong, but can't hit over .250.

Teams have figured him out.

People still use batting average by itself to evaluate offense nowadays? What year is this?

If this is sarcasm, do better.

If it's not, do better.

Never mention batting average again. Ever.
