Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted February 5, 2020 Posted February 5, 2020 The Twins must believe with like 95% certainty that Graterol is a reliever, because trading him 1 for 1 for Maeda seems f***ing awful on the surface, and has to be a clear market value loss for them. Maeda is under team control until after the 2024 season. They lost a few years of control, but strengthen the rotation for the their window of contention while JD and Nelson Cruz are elite.

Yeah but Maeda wasn't even that great last season and he's 31 going on 32. Graterol is a potential (not likely) top of the rotation arm with huge stuff and pretty good minor league success while only 21. I don't think it would be shocking if he was more valuable than Maeda over the next 3 seasons. Maeda isn't the kind of guy that pushes you over the hump against the Yankees of the world, a Graterol who hits his 90th percentile outcome could actually be.
Beans Verified Member Posted February 5, 2020 Posted February 5, 2020 Chaim Bloom did very well with his trade as Red Sox GM!

Dodgers are the big losers here, but hell, flags fly forever!

Maeda is fine for the price...but he is going to get lit up in Minnesota. 5.50 ERA, 4.65 FIP away from LA. Turns 32 in the first month of the season. One positive is that he throws 30% sliders and older pitchers don't seem to lose the slider as fast.
Spanky__99 Old-Timey Member Posted February 5, 2020 Posted February 5, 2020 Yeah, Bosox did well. Deal makes sense for those involved.
Barkerfan23 Verified Member Posted February 5, 2020 Posted February 5, 2020 Yep - trading Betts right before he enters his prime years and moving on from Price at age 34 coming off an injury plagued year. Incredible job by the Red Sox. No what's incredible is that they gave price 300. Were able to get out of it and win a world series. While we are where we are

More to the point from the Twinkies perspective, Graterol only pitched 90 innings last season. They needed a guy that can handle starter workload in a year they are all in.

And Maeda with his 175-134-125-153 IP seasons is that guy? And yes I understand the Dodgers dicking him around had something to do with that but matter of the fact is he still hasn't really put in the innings either.

He should be good for approx. the current average for an SP these days, about 175 innings.
BTS Community Moderator Posted February 5, 2020 Posted February 5, 2020 I have no issues with the Twins move to acquire Maeda. It's 4 years of cheap control of a league average starter for a team very high on the win curve. I don't think Graterol is too high a price to pay for that.
Spanky__99 Old-Timey Member Posted February 5, 2020 Posted February 5, 2020 Maeda's likely happy he's leaving the org after all that BS he endured, but's going to miss that shot winning with his ex-mates.
Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted February 5, 2020 Posted February 5, 2020 I'm with Jim and BTS on this. I see why the Twins did it. Will it bite them long term? probably, but they are looking to win in 2020, 2021.
glory Old-Timey Member Posted February 5, 2020 Posted February 5, 2020 Wouldn't be shocking at all, but I understand why the Twins made the move. Dodgers are the big losers here, but hell, flags fly forever! I don't think the Dodgers are losers. They gave up players they didn't need, got back one of the best players in the game for at least his age 27 season (if not more if they re-sign him) and Price at half of his contract. I think every team got what they wanted out of this. The only team that I think overpaid is the Twins for Maeda, but they know more about Graterol than anyone else. If he's a RP long term then it's not as bad.
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted February 5, 2020 Posted February 5, 2020 Maeda for Graterol is interesting. I don't think it's that bad for the Twins. Maeda is a solid mid rotation starter and he's cheap. Surely that's worth a decent prospect? Seems like a floor for ceiling type of deal.

Betts is going to be looking at Trout's $450M deal and going hmmmmm. He won't get that but that's what he is looking at. From a team/winning perspective the Dodgers might be winners, or maybe not. Next several months will tell the tale!
Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted February 5, 2020 Posted February 5, 2020 Haven't seen much reaction to the Joc for Rengifo deal. I don't think much of Rengifo and Pederson is a solid 3 WAR guy with 2 yrs of control.

This moves Dobnak to the minors when Pineda comes back. Not sure what happens if Rich Hill is healthy. They have a lot of risky pitchers...so they have mitigated the risk a bit but I just don't think it upgrades them.

Guys like Rengifo have more value with 13 hitters on the roster. No pressure to rush back from the Hamate injury in LAD.

Grant77 Old-Timey Member Posted February 5, 2020 Posted February 5, 2020 Nice deal for the Dodgers. They probably upgrade the rotation a touch with Price, while perhaps not adding a ton of salary depending on the money from Boston. Verdugo for Betts is a significant win for them. I would have expected a far larger return for Betts, but there was obviously some desperation to move Betts and some other salary to get under the tax threshold. Aroldis Chapman and Andrew Miller got similar or better returns for partial seasons.

bones10 Old-Timey Member Posted February 5, 2020 Posted February 5, 2020 So how do the Redsox look after, for this year anyway. Could the Jays legitimately jockey them for 3rd in the division?

TheHurl Site Manager Posted February 5, 2020 Posted February 5, 2020 So how do the Redsox look after, for this year anyway. Could the Jays legitimately jockey them for 3rd in the division? I can't find updated projections but just from my own. They project about 9 games ahead of us still.
max silver Old-Timey Member Posted February 5, 2020 Posted February 5, 2020 This was a decent fall-back option for the Twins to add a starter after striking out in free agency for the bigger fish they were supposedly after. Redsox should be quite a bit worse off in the short term, but it's not hard to see them loading up again next off-season in free agency.
