Asst GM Taubman barred for life

Apparently this is related to his conduct towards the female report re: Osuna rather than the sign stealing

Posted

You wouldn't get this same punishment every time. It would get worse. The team may even forfeit TV revenue, or a full season.

It was actually a more extreme punishment than I expected, tbh. But I do think it's fair.

I would have liked to seen a $20M fine or something, too. But those draft picks could end up being worth hundreds of millions.

Astros have no regrets. 4 prospects + 5M for a World Series.

They probably even calculated this penalty into the equation as they were doing it.

That's true

But how much do you think the sign stealing mattered?

I think this is worthy of it's own thread. Looks like an official announcement coming soon.

Will an Asterisk now appear with their 2017 title win ?

literally every astros fan commenting on twitter saying "WORTH IT!!!!!" is really annoying. An asterisk would actually be awesome for the fans

Astro's fired Luhnow and Hinch.

So, I was going to ask Pendelton to be my scouting director for my Fantasy drafts. However, now that Pendelton has a team in the same league and is the competition I should ask Luhnow, seems like he will have free time and nothing else to do with baseball..

What about all the players supposedly on roids who contributed to WS champions? Should we put an asterisks beside any Yankees WS win that had Clemens as an example??

If you ain't cheating you ain't trying.. Just be prepared to suffer the consequences if caught...

Why can't an asterisk be part of the consequences? Most people wouldn't even give a s***

Cheating at the organizational level is not even remotely comparable to a player doing steroids, imo.

Why? Apparently the trainers were in on it, everyone knew what was going on? Having the players actually cheating vs just using some electronic aide. The players still have to perform.. They still have to catch up with and hit the fastball over the fence or for a double etc... I would say equal plane... as far as an asterisk would go..

If you had a overage kid on a Little League WS team, and the coach etc knew... Same thing IMO. Player, electronics, cheating is cheating...

MLB openly invited this type of ******** when they turned a blind eye to foreign substance cheating all of these years. And guess which team was front and centre on that front before all this! The Astros!

The league needed to legalize a mild form of pitcher grip tack (or whatever) ten years ago and outlaw all others.

Something like rosin? That's a good idea.

Luhnow, Hinch, and Cora are all finished in MLB IMO.

Yeah they're not coming back:

Yes there should be a rosin bag + a tube of firm grip (or whatever) behind the mound. Let MLB pick the product or design the product, something that provides a bit of grip but isn't excessive.

Don't want to live in your world.

In multi- million and billion dollar industries all across the board there is pushing the limits to try and get a competitive advantage.. Govts bug even friendly Govts to get insight on trade negotiations. The Blue Jays apparently had a man in White and a trainer on staff ejecting their SP with roids... Don't get me started with the Chinese.... It is reality and I was being tongue n cheek. There are probably a lot more teams doing same s***.. Just no one investigates or focuses on a team that comes in 4th in their division and does not make the playoffs..

Apparently the fine was the maximum allowed.

Based on the punishment laid out and the tone of this thread, it feels like I should be offended. But I'm not.

I am not offended nor upset at the Houston Astros sign stealing technique. You'd have to be one naive moutherf***er to think that this is the only time this has happened by using technology.

This game is so ass-backwards sometimes. As if everyone wants it to be like how it was in the dead ball era. They deny roboumps and try to put their head in the sand when it comes to video sign stealing. But you can look at video all day and night before or after games to find out pitcher "tells". Steroids of the 2000's have outlawed literally the best pitcher and hitter of that era from the HOF and they were unquestionable HOFers before using. But any stories from the 1970's are overlooked...or 40's or 20's.

I'm fine with this punishment. I've seen a lot of complaints that it isn't harsh enough but Luhnow and Hinch's careers in baseball are effectively over(probably Cora's as well), even without an official ban. I would speculate that Jim Crane agreed to take his own action in firing them in cooperation with Manfred's investigation. Any team that hires them in the future is in for a major PR hit. The $5M fine is nothing, but losing your two top draft picks for the next years should hurt. Plus, in the court of public opinion, the 2017 title is going to be forever tainted.

I was never expecting or hoping for individual players to receive punishment, but I am surprised that Carlos Beltran is specifically mentioned as an orchestrator of the scheme but isn't likely to be punished.
