wilko Old-Timey Member Posted December 29, 2020 Posted December 29, 2020 Now Smoak is going to Japan Getting over 6M Wow. Would he have even got a major league deal worth a third of that here at this point? Nope. He's gonna mash over there!
Spanky__99 Old-Timey Member Posted December 29, 2020 Posted December 29, 2020 I would prioritize getting a franchise SS over having a 10 million dollar 4th OFer. Jays24 Old-Timey Member Posted December 29, 2020 Posted December 29, 2020 Why would you trade Gurriel to spend 300M on a shortstop when you already have one? Makes zero sense. Because Lindor is young and elite at that position while Bo is nowhere near him there yet. Bo can still grow into that but I'd think it's a near certainty that he becomes an elite 2B or possibly 3B. While Tulo underperformed with the bat, he showed how important it is having an elite defensive SS. I'd prefer not to be just average defesnively at that spot.

Tulo didn't show us anything other than trading for aging shortstops over 30 isn't really a great idea. There is no certainty that Bichette becomes elite at second or third. He might have to move off the position but he's 22 years old. Why not just sign Lindor next year? Is this the only year the Blue Jays can win the World Series?

If you believe what has been coming from the Jays FO and our Manager. Run prevention is THE priority this offseason, not offense. Hence Lindor, Springer (until he slows down) pitching make sense in that context...

The last three starting shortstops for WS winning teams were not elite defensive players. So the point doesn't really hold water. If the argument is that you want to improve defense, sign Simmons or Semien. Trading Gurriel to sign Lindor when he's a FA next year is crazy to me.

Should be noted when he was 25-26 Reyes was projecting to be elite defensively. Couple injuries put that to an end

I am not advocating trading LGjr... I agree with you on that... I do believe Tulo contributed greatly to our playoff run with his D.. and D up the middle is key.
Spanky__99 Old-Timey Member Posted December 30, 2020 Posted December 30, 2020 Bo Bichette projects as a top 5 SS, with top 5 defense at the position. There's no urgency for a SS, CF/3B and Pitching are our needs. https://www.fangraphs.com/projections.aspx?pos=ss&stats=bat&type=steamer&team=0&lg=all&players=0

I said that trading Gurriel only made sense if we signed someone like Springer to best allocate our lineup. Otherwise, I agree with everyone, I would not trade him. And let's not pretend like we're the Yankees or Dodgers who can sign any free agent of our choosing. If we have a chance to get an elite player, you make it happen assuming the costs are reasonable obviously.

Seems to me like they dont believe Bo can be an elite defensive SS and they'd like one at that spot.

Bo >>>> Vlad at 3B Lindor/Simmons >> Bo at SS I get it from their point of view I would still jjst rather sign someone else for 3B and CF. But if the free agents you want won't sign you have to look to trades

They're trying to get better defensively on the left side, there isn't many options at 3B(our black hole) after Turner and Bryant, hence the talks with SS'.
saskjayfan Old-Timey Member Posted December 30, 2020 Posted December 30, 2020 I can totally see Bryant going to the Braves... Bryant could be a fantastic pick up for a team that has the money to spend. He's a pretty good player going into a contract year. It would seem that the cost to acquire him won't be that high. The Jays could do a lot worse than trading for Bryant and putting money into pitching.

The Jays could do a lot worse than trading for Bryant and putting money into pitching. Arbitration projections have him likely to get 18.6M for next year. Not many teams want to add that. So yes the cost in trade should be low. You could PROBABLY even get the Cubs to take a smaller contract you don't want, or have them pay part of his salary, to go along with giving them a prospect that they do want. And if he's good next year you probably make him a QO and collect a draft pick. With all that in mind I think they probably just keep him though

This is recency bias, he made two big mistakes in the playoffs in 2020, and that's all you can remember about Bo at SS.

No man, theres a difference in saying he can get better than saying he is already a top 5 SS. It's probably more to do with him having questions coming up to the bigs at that spot. That and with the Simmons/Lindor rumours help confirm those biases against Bo that management also thinks the same. Personally, I'm only in favour of shifting him off that position if we can get a franchise cornerstone like Lindor. It'll also make it easier for Bo to swallow since his longterm happiness should be a big concern for us.

G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted December 30, 2020 Posted December 30, 2020 Slugger Eric Thames is in agreement on a one-year deal with the Yomiuri Giants of Japan’s Nippon Professional Baseball, as first reported by Sports Hochi. Reports out of Japan have pegged the one-year contract’s value in the vicinity of $1.2MM, though the precise number remains unclear

I don't think he'd make a bad 3B, and you obviously move him there if you do get Lindor, but it wouldn't even be all that shocking if Bo had a better 2021 than Lindor (not that I expect it but projections have them off by 1.1 WAR, which isn't that much of a difference over 162 games...)

The Iceman Verified Member Posted January 1, 2021 Posted January 1, 2021 Jays need to improve defensively. Easiest way is to get a top SS and move Bichette to 2nd base in my opinion. 2nd base is where I see him long term as a Jay. 3rd base can be manned primarily by Biggio ideally with a veteran LH 3rd baseman added as a bench player. Brad Miller would be my choice.
Sammy225 Old-Timey Member Posted January 3, 2021 Posted January 3, 2021 Is it just me who would rather Marcus Semien on a two year deal. Gives Groshans time. After 1 down season could be a good signing.

After 1 down season could be a good signing. Guaranteed Semien is looking for a big deal To get someone like him or Didi or Turner on a short deal would require some gambling. Toronto would basically have to wait until the end of the offseason and bet that the market for one of them will not develop. It does sort of seem like Toronto is taking this approach and is going to lean on their roster flexibility to just sign whoever is left
