Laika Community Moderator Posted December 12, 2020 Posted December 12, 2020 https://nypost.com/2020/12/12/indians-facing-massive-francisco-lindor-trade-headache/ This article on Lindor says or implies: - executives all expect he will be dealt - it's certainly not a seller's market for him - in order to get a significant return Cleveland may have to add Carlos Carrasco to the deal Carrasco has 2/$24M left, with a $14M option for year 3 ($3M buyout). So 2/$27M guaranteed. Carrasco was good in 2020 and his strong Steamer projection is the same as Gray, Lynn, and Ryu. He's not Bauer or Snell but he would be in the next tier of available SP.

EZe Verified Member Posted December 12, 2020 Posted December 12, 2020 Not a big fan of the Carrasco add on. By most accounts Cleveland needs to move Lindor before the season starts and we’re one of the only dance partners. Leverage that circumstance to minimize prospect capital.

With Cleveland's objective being to reduce payroll, if they lack in suitors they should end up with less than fair value for the two players. Trust in Shatkins. We will lose a significant farm piece for Lindor alone, probably Groshans or Orelvis with Bo and Frankie locking down the left side of the IF for years to come. The Carrasco add shouldn't result in the loss of any additional top prospects, but a couple of low level lottery picks, or a Van Eyk and another piece.

BTS Community Moderator Posted December 12, 2020 Posted December 12, 2020 Were the Mets just bidding against themselves? I don't remember seeing any other team linked to McCann.

I thought the Angels were linked. I'm not sure how serious. I'm glad the Mets are getting their business done. The big free agents seem to be waiting on them.

glory Old-Timey Member Posted December 12, 2020 Posted December 12, 2020 McCann's the first domino. Realmuto's not going to the Mets, so they are probably going to end up overpaying Springer now that they have a catcher. Hopefully things will start picking up now. I could definitely see Realmuto still being unsigned late into January, unless Dombrowski gets the greenlight to spend. I don't see any obvious fit with money. Maybe the Nats?
BTS Community Moderator Posted December 12, 2020 Posted December 12, 2020 Outside of Stroman accepting his QO, the market hasn't really been paying deflated salaries early on. I guess Trevor May's contact seems pretty team-friendly?

Angels probably wanna upgrade on Stassi. Their primary likely Bauer though.

I think they’ve all accepted the reality that LGJ is the best piece they will get from anyone. I was thinking Moreno was second banana in the deal. This seems like desperation to extract another top 10 prospect. Perhaps I’m too optimistic but Bauer would be my priority A and B. Patience is key in this environment and I wouldn’t close that door if there is still a chance.

The point of adding Carrasco to the deal, for Cleveland, would be to improve the centrepiece. If the market for Lindor is so weak that they can't land a blue-chip prospect for him, they'll pitch Lindor+Carrasco in an attempt to get the big package built around a blue chipper. Cleveland would trade Lindor for Groshans in a minute... Toronto would not do that deal.

Laika Community Moderator Posted December 12, 2020 Posted December 12, 2020 The Mets and McCann f***ed around for so long that I thought New York was just toying with him as part of intense Realmuto negotiations. I actually don't think that contract is tooooo awful. McCann has been pretty solid since 2019. $10M/yr is nothing for the Mets. His agent did well to get that 4 year term though.
connorp Old-Timey Member Posted December 12, 2020 Posted December 12, 2020 I think Ramos for 2/17 was much better 2 years ago but I guess theres injury history there to mess with the comp
EZe Verified Member Posted December 12, 2020 Posted December 12, 2020 Not a bad deal. It’s just fantastic that our top competitor in the free agent market allocated a chunk of payroll early to a player the Jays have zero interest in. I won’t mind if they use up the rest on Springer either.

I just can't feel good about giving 40 million to a catcher who projects to hit for a sub .300 wOBA. They better hope he outperforms his projections. Not hard to see his 2019 and 2020 seasons being BABIP fuelled rage (and also his peak). It's probably OK in the end, but count me out as a McCann truther. Not sorry!

I won’t mind if they use up the rest on Springer either. It's really insane to think of the lack of competition on the market, generally: - Red Sox are dumpster diving or at best just sitting in the weeds, waiting for deals - Yankees seem interested in DJLM but other than that aren't acting aggressive - Dodgers are pretty set already, don't need much - In addition to McCann, Stroman accepting the QO ate up a good chunk of the Mets budget (same thing with the Giants and Gausman). Also Trevor May got real money from the Mets! - Bunch of win-now teams like the Phillies are broke. We have already seen the White Sox use the trade market rather than free agency. The Reds have made money saving trades already. The Indians are always broke. The Cubs are broke. The Astros are apparently even thinking of selling, Correa! The most aggressive team so far in free agency has been the f***ing ROYALS... Toronto should be able to take their pick of a lot of good players. The tricky part is they should remain patient...
EZe Verified Member Posted December 12, 2020 Posted December 12, 2020 I’ve been worried that Atkins would be a silly kid in a candy store and walk away with the equivalent of candy corn or peeps. The opportunity has improved simply by waiting. Timing is key to optimization here and they’ve made it obvious that they will participate in a big way. Even the Ray signing has logic as a hedge against SP bargaining power. It’s built up trust and personally I’m retiring usage of the term Shatkins.
