I still wonder if O’Neill can become something... maybe even our potential target someday? Great power potential there, has some speed, can play all OF positions, Canadian... only if he didn’t strike out like 50% of the time...

But I guess we don’t really need a second Randal Grichuk anytime soon, do we...

He's like an extreme Grichuk. Even higher bust potential but also immense ceiling if he can cut down the Ks to respectable or get the walks way up.

I think this is a really good deal for the Rays. Jose Martinez in the AL will be a beast.

who is he taking AB's away from when a RHP is in? Maybe if Tsutsugo sucks he gets in or Renfroe against strictly FB pitchers.

Between Choi, Martinez and Tsutsugo it looks like the Rays are trying to corner the market on 1B/DH types. Sure Martinez and Tsutsugo can play outfield, but the results likely aren't going to be pretty. The Rays must be very high on Arozarena, he put up very nice numbers last year, but the scouting reports aren't particularly glowing.

He’s going to come back and haunt us for years to come...

Lol...I think at this very moment, he may, just may be the best player (not prospect) in that trade. It certainly did not age well.

By virtue that he is in A+ and Fisher is already in the bigs, I wouldn't go that far (yet), but the Rays evaluate talent better than just about everyone. If they think Stevenson is good or has potential to be good, then he just might be. Curious to see how he develops going forward. He has zero power and the scouting report in the other thread seemed to imply that he can't play a position well, so it's going to be hard for him to overcome those issues if they are not correctable, but dammit the Rays could turn one of us into a competent big leaguer, so who knows.

And just like that, Cal Stevenson has become a B+ prospect...

I wonder if Stevenson is still "useless filler" now that the Rays traded for him.

The Astros had to ADD to Cal Stevenson to acquire Austin Pruitt who is awful, a ninth rounder from the most recent draft. Uh yeah I'd say he's very much filler.

Given that the Astros traded him away (and had to throw in another pitching prospect to seal the deal) for a 30 year old 0.2 win soft tossing right handed reliever, I don't think we can get too terribly excited about what Cal Stevenson is just yet.

He’s been a “gut” follow for me since we drafted him. Just have a feeling about him. You can learn gap power, but those walk and k rates are just astonishing.. and he can steal a few bases.

The Astros traded two guys for Austin Pruitt whom the Rays probably would have given away for free and takes up a 40-man spot. Granted, I guess Stevenson and some random ninth rounder is basically for free. Really odd deal for them.

I wasn't expecting the Astros to actually get anything for him, just that the Rays spot talent better than anyone in the league. I'm curious to see how Stevenson does now.

I don't think Pruitt is that s***.

Really? Mediocre K rate, non-elite walk rate, doesn't seemingly suppress homers or induce weak contact, has interesting spin rates on his curveball but nothing crazy on his fastball. He's also 30 already.

Pruitt is an elite spin rate pitcher, whom the Astros love. I can see them tweaking something and him suddenly dominating. Stevenson has great hand-eye with an advanced knowledge of the strike zone and good speed. It kinda seems like the kind of thing both teams might look for.

I don't really see him succeeding in high leverage or as a #5 SP but I think he's a big leaguer. A human that won't rape you if he has throw an inning or two at some point.

He replaces Joe Biagini. That's the most positive thing I will say about him.

I don't really get where you're going with the second sentence but okay lol. It kinda just seems like you're describing essentially a replacement level reliever, which has very little value when most teams should have a couple of his ilk in the minors, especially the Astros who are loaded with superfluous non-elite pitching talent.

Houston actually isn't that pitching deep. They have guys like Biagini, Kent Emanuel, Blake Taylor, Jon Edwards and Cy Sneed on the 40.

But they also have guys like Cionel Perez, Rogelio Armenteros, Tyler Ivey, Cristian Javier, Francis Martes who apparently still exists, Brandon Bielak, etc. All of them should at least be as good as Austin Pruitt. Is Cy Sneed really that much worse?

Many of those guys can spot start, be converted to multi-inning relievers, be bulk guys paired with an opener, converted to traditional relievers, or just straight up traded for a better reliever than Pruitt.

Jose Martinez, Randy Arozarena, 38th overall pick to the Rays

Liberatore, low level catching prospect, 66th overall pick to the Cards

Arozarena is the name in the deal to watch for the Rays. He could thrive playing under the Rays style of baseball if he gets everyday AB's, which I think he will at one point if someone goes on the IL or if Kiermaier gets traded.
