I want Puig so bad

I do, too. Maybe not as bad, but I would smile at the signing, mostly because he's so entertaining. He runs the bases like his hair is on fire. I just don't know if I would want him for 2-3 years (more?), or a 1-year.

Last I saw Steamer has him at < 2 WAR. I would say 2.5 WAR or more is possible in a new environment.

It would spell the end of the one of the middling youngsters at least. Turn a 0 WAR into 2 WAR.

I know our pitching staff is pretty crowded right now, but I’d love to get Ross Stripling. Angels didn’t seem like they we’re giving up that much for Joc and Stripling. 3 more years of control too.

I would be down with that. Would you have to trade a Kay, or even a Thornton+, to get him? I don't know how to assess his value in comparison to our SP depth.

BTW, I am higher on Kay than Thornton atm.

can anybody measure his fatness and launch angle??? not that the former matters too much...

VGJ 2020 WAR = 8-7*abs(Launch_angle_factor) - 1.5*abs(fatness_factor)

Launch_angle_factor is between -1 and 1, where optimal launch angle is 0. Fatness_factor is also between -1 and 1 where optimal fatness is 0

If he is still fat and an extreme ground ball hitter he will repeat his 0.4 or whatever WAR.

On the other hand if he gets too light or hits too many pop-ups (makes too extreme of a corrections) his WAR will still be low.

I read about Shaw having a bad season, maybe because he overdid his launch angle.

It will be ironic if Vlad becomes a slim 205 pound popup hitter... (That seems like something that would happen to us Blue Jay fans).

What if he becomes a fat singles hitter?

Merryweather is a guy I am still really optimistic about. I hope to gawd he stays healthy and finds himself right in the mix during ST

I don't really see how he can now, we have too many starters ahead of him. If he isn't turned into a reliever then he'll have to wait for the inevitable injuries to create a chance IMO.

What if he starts in TC and is lights out...there will be some tough decisions to make.

starters will probably barely be over 750 IPs this year. There will be plenty of innings for everyone, stop worrying about starter/reliever labels.

If reports about Merryweather's stuff are to believed, then I think his ceiling is likely a multi-inning fireman type out of the bullpen. Like a Chad Green type perhaps, you can bring him in anytime in the game to shut down an oppositions rally.

Yeah there will be. Borucki, Thornton, Kay, and Shun will all be competing with him for the initial one rotation spot, he'd have to be lights out to jump ahead of all of them. Then hopefully the likes of Hatch, Perez and Waguespack will also be pushing by the time Shoemaker gets injured!

If we are relatively lucky with injuries then maybe one of Roark or Anderson pitches well enough to be traded.

Makes sense, but if he starts in TC and is effective they may give him that 5th spot. It all boils downs to who has options. The best out of options SP in TC will get that 5th spot, period.

Merryweather may also have the makeup to be an effective opener. Come in for 1 to 1.5 times through the order dealing.

It will be interesting and exciting to see how this all shakes out.

I don't think options are going to play much of a role in deciding the last rotation spot. Barring injury, there are 4 spots accounted for: Ryu, Roark, Anderson, and Shoemaker. They contenders for the last spot right now are probably:

Thornton (has options)

Yamaguchi (options)

Borucki (options)

Kay (options)

SRF (oprions)

Zeuch (options)

Merryweather (options)

The only relevant arm with no options is Font. I'm expecting him to be in the bullpen, because his stuff has played up in shorter outings. I don't think the team will go to him as an opener right out of camp given the depth of arms that could reasonably give them 5 good innings every 5 days.

I think Font did quite well in the opener role, and if that's the best place to use him, I don't mind if the guy giving us 5 good innings does it from 3-7...

If Font pitches better in 2 inning stints every 3-4 days as an opener, then I don't see the harm in doing that. The only starter who shouldn't get an opener is Ryu. Everyone else is fair game in that regard. If Font does well as a traditional RP out of the pen, then even better.

Our rotation kind of sucks tbh. Ryu and then a bunch of spaghetti thrown at the wall. Hopefully some of them stick.

It wasn't gonna be fully revamped in one season. I'll take a handful of 1.5-2 Win pitchers with decent depth options over throwing the likes of Edwin Jackson, Clayton Richard & Clay Bucholz out there

Hopefully within a year we'll have Ryu and Pearson forming a legit front of the rotation duo and some steady innings eaters behind them, with SWR starting to knock down the door. Perhaps someone out of the maybe pile proves to be a solid mid rotation guy as well.

It's not the sexiest pitching depth but I don't think the situation is completely bleak either. In the very least we shouldn't have to watch any journeymen shitballers get trotted out there anymore.

Yeah I agree- that's a great point about Pearson. If he's legit, Ryu holds steady, and then a couple other guys prove they are capable then it could turn around in a hurry. On the flipside, if Ryu and/or Pearson gets hurt and nobody really steps up it could be a disaster. Pretty big year in terms of seeing what we've got in the rotation and if it will allow us to contend in 2021.

TBF Roark, Anderson and Shoemaker are just placeholders to eat innings, none of them are long term pieces. Hopefully by the time we’ve got the position players to compete, a few of the many prospects will be good enough to make our rotation look better.

IMO we’d be really unlucky if we didn’t, plus we should get a few half decent relievers too.
