If I had to make a prediction, I'd say the Jays will sign McHugh. Shatkins seems to like the high spin rate pitchers and McHugh comes from an org that Atkins traded with like every couple of months.

Four times in 4 years from what I recall.

I wonder if Shatkins is looking through the FA reliever scraps. There are still a few guys I'd give a cheap MLB deal to: Hirano, Hunter, Jeffress, Kintzler, McHugh, Phelps, Strop, and Vizcaino are all interesting to at least some degree.

It would only take a Pannone DFA to make room.

You'd think so. Last year they added a couple of veterans in Phelps and Hudson in January and March and both worked out well. This year they haven't really added an MLB pen arm unless you just consider Tamagachi a reliever, which would be fair.

I do not see what Pannone really offers. He is the only LHRP on the 40 man roster which is something, but it's not like he has obvious LOOGY qualities. Are there any decent LHRP available?

Has there been any talk about Shapiro's long term future with the team?

The fact that Rogers had enough confidence in him to give the go ahead to sign Ryu is a positive, but I was hoping something would be announced by now.

If Shapiro leaves right as things are getting going for us I would be very surprised and quite upset. He better stick around!

This is the latest news on the subject I believe:

Holt is a platoon type of guy right? who would he split time with?

Holt is a backup utility player. He shouldn't be signed under the illusion that he's getting guaranteed PT. We're not signing him so he can platoon with anyone, he'll organically get playing time through injuries, rest days and late game substitutions. He's also not a heavy splits guy, given by his career 94 wRC+ against RHP and 91 against LHP.

That's a weird one. I don't think there was even one rumour that he was coming back; last MLBTR hit for him is from 2014.

From unrumoured to major league deal? I don't want to overstate it but whether or not he is any good will be a good test of the team's scouting/analytics department because there are decent MLB relievers on the board still.

I wonder who’s being removed from the 40 to make room. Pannone kind of sticks out. Alford and Valera too now that they’re out of options. They've done a great job building depth. I don’t remember the last time their was so little dead weight on the roster.

As the roster improves more guys look like reasonable DFA candidates.

Valera - you'd think they keep him for now due to SS depth but they do have Espinal on the 40 also

Davis and McKinney - do we really care?

Romano - do we really care?

Pannone

Gaviglio

Also, the chaff is decent enough now that they might flip someone in a trade rather than DFA (or after DFAing)

Even some of those guys are a bit more interesting than what typically fills up the end of the roster I think. Gaviglio does a pretty good job soaking up bulk innings from the pen, and I think would quickly find an MLB job if he were cut. I find Romano at least a bit interesting now that he throws 95+ in relief, and he still has options. OF is probably the easiest place to raise the floor right now. I wouldn't miss Alford, Davis, or McKinney at all if they were punted off the roster, but at least Davis and McKinney are optionable.

As a team/organization gets better and deeper it will inevitably start to shed higher quality players. Good problem. The trick is getting value back. They should be able to deal a guy like Gaviglio for something. Not much, but something. Same for a few of those other names.

The Rays have perpetual 40 man crunches. Always wheeling and dealing

If there’s one thing Atkins does well it’s relievers. Bass, Dolis, Font, and Yamaguchi (if he’s in the pen) behind Giles is a lot of uncertainty in performance but I’ll give him the benefit of the doubt.

My guess is Valera gets dropped. I don’t think Alford is going anywhere until they get a look at him in ST, and even then they might stash him on the bench. Even if he’s a long shot to ever be good, Shatkins likes depth and if Alford is fixable in some way he’d be an asset. Valera seems like roster filler.

Why would you want to move Gaviglio? The guy does a good job at playing his position. Unlike several others who don't.

He’s more or less a replacement level arm and I don’t see any upside there.

The fact that he has not been atrocious means some team that needs an SP8 or length in the bullpen might trade something for him.

You mean some team like the Jays, that appreciate his ability to pitch regularly in long relief, works for $600G a year, and has 5 years of service time left?

Okay, Sam. Good luck this year

Valera is good you guys are being haters. Always had good plate discipline and the Yanks fixed his swing to produce more power. Steamer doesn't hate him either and they aren't fully factoring in the skills change. He's Terminator's 2020 pick to click which means he's a lock to produce. Beating out slap hitters like Panik, Tejada and Espinal is going to be a piece of cake this spring.

And I am fully on board with that hair/beard combo.

Yeah, here's hoping he's our 2012-2014 version of Fernando Rodney

Nick Senzel reportedly on the block. He wouldn't come cheap but he would be a great fit in CF. Reds desperately need a SS, but I doubt they see Gurriel as that piece. Trying to imagine what a trade with them would look like

Senzel is a great fit for Toronto's roster. 3B/CF!

I don't see how the teams line up on a trade though. They might want Giles but Senzel is rich for Giles.

Include Votto and his contract in the deal?

The Reds are trying to win in part to get Joey Votto into the Hall of Fame (kidding but not really). Can't see that being something they are exploring, as much as a frugal owner would like to shed Votto's deal at this point.

Good lord, Votto is still owed 4/$107M too. Can't see Toronto even replying to emails with his name in there.

Only way I can see a deal getting done unless Groshans is part of the deal, but Reds in win now mode so can't see it
