Nah, that's not what I wrote. Are you f***ing blind?

My only expectation is we will see Pearson in BJ jersey this season.

Wow, aggressively ableist language from someone with a disability!!! Shocked I am

Yeah, every pitcher should be Nolan Ryan, the most durable pitcher in the history of the game, or they suck f***ing balls!

Edit: And also, like, I recall Leiter missing years to injury early in his career, I think blisters, but maybe wrong... So maybe that 160 pitch game wasn't a great idea?

What's in Oshawa's drinking water that makes you like this? Oh yeah, opioids.

They won't use him as a post-opener. Glasnow has been used in that role by Tampa Bay in part because of his early career struggles; with Pittsburgh Glasnow looked like a SP bust and he was being resigned into a pure relief role.

Toronto is going to hope that Nate Pearson is a Power Horse MLB SP a la Syndergaard, Cole, etc. and they will develop him like that to the point of failure.

I agree they won't use him as a post-opener... I still think they may use him occasionally as an opener, and limit his innings for a while. This doesn't preclude him eventually being Cole a few years down the line.

Yeah I don't think they'll let him throw 200 innings in 2020. Maybe try to limit him to ~160 at the most this year.

Reading this opener ******** for Pearson (or in general) makes my skin crawl. I want Pearson's debut to be a 160 pitch complete game a la Al Leiter. It's time to treat Millennial baseball players like real men like they did back in the day. If he gets injured, he gets injured. That was just meant to be. Nolan Ryan pitched over 5,000 innings until age 46 running up pitch counts with all his stupid walks and he never needed a f***ing opener.

It looks like the game you were referring to was in 1989, just before the Jays traded Jessie Barfield for him... Jessie Barfield was pretty under-rated... he had a couple Josh Donaldson like seasons, and another couple of solid 4 WAR seasons. I know some people get sick of talking about the past, but it's fascinating looking back at some of this stuff with the perspective of modern Analytics.

It could be argued Barfield was the Jays best or second best player at the time... certainly Bell and Moseby were way worse by that point. But at the time I don't remember much fuss over the trade... Barfield was viewed as the third best guy in that outfield and Lieter was suppose to have a really good arm... However Leiter's minor league stats are terrible... though he eventually was good for a few years.

I am honestly of the opinion f*** innings limits. Let 'er buck until the metrics get horrible, and then DL.

BTW, Nolan Ryan was a beast, even at 45. He's a freak. I will bet he still throws 80 mph at whatever age he is. That is faster than I throw, and I am 30 and pitch in a mens league

Teams have more advanced ways of measuring fatigue these days. Fans should just use innings as a proxy. They won’t literally count his innings but I would not expect him to just chuck it all year long with a full MLB starter workload - that would be kind of stupid.

If they wait until the metrics dip that means he’s probably already hurt and it’s too late.

I dunno about everything you said; the Jays FO has pretty much said exactly that, that innings limits are stone age numbers. If metrics dip, it's either a tell that the other teams are exploiting or fatigue/injury. Pretty simple.

The Barfield trade was a few months before my time, but I imagine it took a huge load of balls to pull the trigger on it. I don't mind talking about the old school stuff. Now you have a bunch of computers and nerds on computers and nerds hoping to infiltrate baseball front offices with their computers. It's nice to think of the good old days with Gillick where teams were constructed through smart trades, rule 5 pickups and international free agents when the Jays and Dodgers were the only teams smart enough to do it. No nerds with computers.

Another random thought on the old school. Tom Henke was apparently some kind of compensation for Cliff Johnson signing with the Rangers as a FA. An aging DH player signs off to Texas and the Jays get an MLB ready pitching prospect as comp. Like, "here you go out of a trash bin because we feel sorry for you that Cliff jetted your team". LOL we don't exist in a baseball world today where 10 Cliff Johnsons even get you a rookie Tom Henke with six years control in a trade.

Been kinda checked out this offseason (actually more like June lol), but are we thinking the roster is basically set at this point? Or are we thinking there may still be a move or two to make?

I think there will be a few smaller moves. It feels like teams are waiting for remaining FA prices to come down for the remaining guys. I would be shocked if we didn't sign a wildcard reliever or two.

Sanchez?

Sanchez?

I would sign him, for sure. What's his ETA 2021, or will he be ready for 2020? I've sort of forgotten his issue...shoulder/labrum tear?

I know the numbers aren't there, but I still think he would be a sweet bullpen add long term.

Aaron Sanchez, dude. Solely for reliever duties.

I recall Barfield got off to a bad start that year (as well as the team in general) and I believe the trade was in part to make room for our young outfielder prospects to play every day, like Rob Ducey, Glenallen Hill, Junior Felix, then Mark Whiten a year later. Moseby was also nearing the end of his run at the time, and Bell was also seen as declining since ‘87 and got into too many clubhouse issues etc, so Gillick probably saw it as the right time to start breaking up the big three and rebuild. Of course none of our OF prospects really worked out in the end, although Felix did leave us with Devo and we got an ok rental of Candiotti for Hill and Whiten.

Leiter of course immediately had blister issues a la Aaron Sanchez and only pitched like a game or two each year until 1993 (kind of amazing we were that patient with him)... he then contributed well in 94 and 95 before going off to another team as soon as he had the chance to.

He knows. Sanchez had shoulder surgery and is out for a while. Probably will pitch in 2020, but he won't be ready for spring training.

Ah, had forgotten about that.

Jays may be hinting at a new baby blue jersey for this year. I'd be on board for that with the white panel hats/helmets.

Edit: Mark Shapiro also liked the tweet so I think we can confirm it
