Carlos Danger Old-Timey Member Posted September 14, 2019 Posted September 14, 2019 That's probably a good thing. (Hopefully) he'll realize he has work to put in over the winter. Keep him away from la abuela!
Abomination Old-Timey Member Posted September 14, 2019 Posted September 14, 2019 Nice job by Bichette. The bat died a hero.
DigitalRock Old-Timey Member Posted September 14, 2019 Posted September 14, 2019 f***ing garbage call.
Carlos Danger Old-Timey Member Posted September 14, 2019 Posted September 14, 2019 Vlad, come on, all we needed was one of your pop ups to the track.. Damn!!
Barkerfan23 Verified Member Posted September 14, 2019 Posted September 14, 2019 Start vlad in Buffalo next year until he learns to hit the ball in the air
jaysguy44 Old-Timey Member Posted September 14, 2019 Posted September 14, 2019 Yikes, that didn't look good. Looked like a TJ type of injury
goldbug103 Verified Member Posted September 14, 2019 Posted September 14, 2019 Very disappointing. I remember M Wilmer talking about him like a saviour and the greatest thing to ever be for the Jays. None of that has come to fruition. Quite the opposite actually. At least Bichette provides value on the defensive side and base running. Same with Biggio. Guerrero provides none of that.
BlueBaller Verified Member Posted September 14, 2019 Posted September 14, 2019 He's a 20 year old rook man... It only seems disappointing because the mouth breather media pumped him as a surefire instant superstarI'm aware of his age I just thought he'd be .850+ ops.

It only seems disappointing because the mouth breather media pumped him as a surefire instant superstar It seems dissapointing because his peer group, Juan Soto, Gleyborre Torres, Fernando Tatis JR, Acuno have all hit the ground running... He's 35th in rookie WAR... has less WAR than Reese McGuire... is what... 6th or 7th on his own team for Rookie WAR?? Biggio, Bichette, Jansen, Thorton, and McGruire all have more WAR... In a year where teams are going to hit 300 homeruns... where another Rookie will hit 50+... another Rookie (Alvarez) will have an 1100 OPS... The Vlad thing is dissapointing... especially the last three weeks.. just when it looked like he might finish Strong, he's essentially going to tank his final numbers and might end up with negative WAR.

Barkerfan23 Verified Member Posted September 14, 2019 Posted September 14, 2019 It's all launch angle really. Vlad has one if the worst launch angles.
Barkerfan23 Verified Member Posted September 14, 2019 Posted September 14, 2019 McGuire is a gem Yeah he is really opening some eyes
Barkerfan23 Verified Member Posted September 14, 2019 Posted September 14, 2019 Forcing him to play third . He is probably taking his poor defense to heart and that is probably hurting him with the bat
Abomination Old-Timey Member Posted September 14, 2019 Posted September 14, 2019 McGuire is a gem I'm loving him behind the plate. I still believe in Jansen, but catchers get so beat up over the course of the year that having them in a timeshare would probably keep them both more productive.
Olerud363 Old-Timey Member Posted September 14, 2019 Posted September 14, 2019 wow he's possibly a negative value. kid has a lot of work to do. Not currently negative value... will be 0.5 or so after this game. Could end up negative value by the end of the year, if he doesn't heat up a bit.
goldbug103 Verified Member Posted September 14, 2019 Posted September 14, 2019 In his defence the team around him is terrible. But generally I would agree that the hype did not translate to anything tangible. Again he provides little value OPSing 750 with below average defence and base running. At this point, not worth a long term deal this off season. Bichette and Biggio on the other hand ...
Abomination Old-Timey Member Posted September 14, 2019 Posted September 14, 2019 As Font is growing in confidence and command, he looks like he could actually be a potential closer.
Daniel Labude Jays Centre Contributor Posted September 14, 2019 Posted September 14, 2019 It's all launch angle really. Vlad has one if the worst launch angles. You obviously know nothing about Vlad lmao. He doesnt try to hit homers... has been said by so many people I figured a casual like you would understand. He wont be crushing homers left and right for a couple of years. He hits the ball hard and is a hitter...not a power hitter. He leads rookies or is close in hits at 20 years old. That is who he is right now until a few offseasons with the MLB club to enhance what he is...a really f***ing good hitter who doesnt get cookie cutter fastballs like Alonso, Soto, Acuna, Bichette, Tatis Lmao

Yeah I'm seriously baffled when people act shocked when others express disappointment in Vlad's numbers this year. It's like, yeah, he's 20 with a 110 wRC+ (or whatever it is), which is remarkable in a normal situation, but with his peers hitting the ground running at a similar age + expectations due to minor league performance, are some of you really surprised at the disappointment? Didn't projection models have him having a 5 WAR or something crazy like that before the season (forgot what it was)? Yes, Vlad is excellent for his age, and will likely be a star, but the narrative that we should be thrilled with his performance to date is ridiculous. It's not like no other 20 year old's or rookies are killing it right away. Regardless he will be fine long term.

Yeah, I definitely expected more. You never know with prospects though and just looking at Vladdy, there was some redflags with his body type. I still think all the hype didn't help... I mean it was ridiculous. Even a lot of bright baseball minds on this forum were predicting 4-5 war in his debut season. Sure, as you mentioned, some guys hit the ground running, but it's certainly not the norm.

These young guys come up and they get demoralized when they lose all of the time. I actually prefer the way clubs like San Diego and Texas are rebuilding, whether it works out for them or not is another story.
