I have never been dissatisfied with SHATKINS but what specifically Ross Atkins brings to the table as the GM has always been questionable. I could see a GM change making sense. Maybe Shapiro was using Atkins this whole time as the organizational punching bag while the team goes through a transition phase. Now that the transition phase is nearing an end, time to get someone who can actually pull some high level GM s*** off, rather than slowly assemble depth through nickle and dime moves?

Shapiro is leaving. Rogers is trash ownership and has not let him do things the way he wants since day 1.

Hate to see it cause Shapiro could've done a good job

I'm sure I'll be banning you soon enough...but I kind of like the screen name.

I think Shapiro believed/believes in Atkins as they share the same correct team-building philosophy. But I think the actual solutions Atkins has found under the correct rubric have been underwhelming.

But every time I said this you guys busted my balls!

I've been told that Shapiro has zero influence on team building.

I am sure Shapiro isn't out there making deals and also I am sure he almost always rubber stamps Ross's deals, but it's pretty obvious that the overall vision is created by Shapiro.

He says stuff about sustainability and pipelines of talent then Ross parrots it a few days later.

A president doesn't need to worry about every little move as long as the direction is correct. I think that's why we're seeing a trend from business types in the president role (like Beeston) to baseball types in that role (like Shapiro). Because the big long term baseball decisions have to be made by someone who knows about baseball and the deals themselves aren't as important as the actual direction. Shapiro's skills should have him well above working the phones and negotiating trades - He just needs to build the vision and hire people to turn the crank for him

You mean actually making transactions right? Because I'm sure Shapiro sets the mandate and then asks Atkins to execute. Otherwise, what is his purpose lol.

Yeah, he just worded that wrong, Atkins has full autonomy, Shapiro signs off on transactions.

Yeah, Shapiro likely sets up the guidelines, Atkins has to make moves based on those guidelines, and Shapiro signs off on everything in the end. I don't think Shapiro has the low OBP/exit velocity/35% K% fetish, although I didn't pay close attention to his run in Cleveland, so who knows. Seems like Atkins and his crew handle the actual moves.

I'm really curious to see how the Shapiro/Rogers thing plays out. If they really wanted him long term, a deal would have been agreed to already, or at least before the off season begins. Every time Shapiro is asked about it, he tap dances around it. Clearly if they let him walk, or he decides to leave, he would get a job pretty easily, so there's no real desperation on his part I'm sure. Ed Rogers hired Shapiro, so maybe we should trust his judgment, but he did try to tamper to get Kenny Williams and Dan Duquette before that, so it's kind of frightening to think about what the next Jays front office might look like if Shapiro leaves.

Why would I get banned for a perfectly reasonable take?

Pretty obvious Rogers hasnt let him do what he wants.

Jonah strikes again. Still don't know how credible this dude is, but seems like he isn't just a random guy, so take this for what it is.

Maybe. Had no clue who he was until he was brought up a few pages ago. Who knows. Grain of salt required until we hear more noise from other sources.

Grain of salt? Just a grain? One grain of salt? One freaking grain?

I'm hearing there will be a press conference at 9:30!

What is Shapiro's contract status?

Runs through 2020. He recently extended Atkins who also runs through 2020.

Basically both the president and GM have a year left on their deals and not even a hint of an extension for either one. Rogers did the same thing to AA four years ago, then he went bananas at the trade deadline, got them to the playoffs, and rejected their contract offer. Not sure how this story ends but the longer Shapiro is without an extension the more likely it is that one or both parties likely does not want the marriage to continue.

Yeah that doesn't exactly scream the words "job security" to me.

Well somehow Shapiro's name was in consideration for Big Ten Commissioner. So maybe it's Shapiro that wants out.

This quote always left me uneasy: "If we were just running our team without fans and it was an intellectual exercise, we probably would’ve hit a reset over a year ago," is what Shapiro said in December 2017.

Rogers not providing complete autonomy has been a problem for well over a decade now. They can't get out of their own way.

Blue Jays projected 2020 arb salaries:

Matt Shoemaker – $3.8MM

Ken Giles – $8.4MM

Devon Travis – $1.95MM

Ryan Tepera – $1.6MM

Brandon Drury – $2.5MM

Luke Maile – $800K

Derek Law – $1.3MM

Ryan Dull – $800K

Travis is an easy non-tender candidate. So is Luke Maile. Maybe even Tepera given his age now and reliever volatility.

So with arb estimates, our payroll is looking to be around $45M assuming you tender Shoemaker, Giles, Drury, and Law contracts at those amounts. Even less if we trade Giles.

Pass on everyone except Giles and Shoemaker for me.

I think they'll tender Drury a contract to give him one more shot and Law as well to cheaply fill out that pen.

Everyone else is probably gone.

Former Jays:

Aaron Sanchez – $5.6MM

Roberto Osuna – $10.2MM

Joe Biagini – $1.5MM

Kevin Pillar – $9.7MM

Marcus Stroman – $11.8MM

Sanchez is definitely getting non-tendered,and there's a good chance Biagini is as well.
