BTS Community Moderator Posted September 5, 2019 Author Posted September 5, 2019 Not sure who has to be added to the 40-man this offseason. I'm guessing Law, Boshers, Travis, Maile, and possibly Drury are non-tendered to clear space.
z3r0s Old-Timey Member Posted September 5, 2019 Posted September 5, 2019 lol, Troy is like 25% of our projected payroll
KevinGregg Verified Member Posted September 5, 2019 Posted September 5, 2019 don't all those dudes on the 40 man but not the 25 man roster make like 50,000 dollars rather than near major league minimum since they are not on major league deals? That knocks about 7.5M off of the projected payroll

glory Old-Timey Member Posted September 5, 2019 Posted September 5, 2019 They will definitely trade Giles IMO as long as he's healthy. One more year of expensive arb, closer on a team that isn't ready yet, and was already traded to the Yanks even with injury concerns before Cashman backed out. I'm not expecting much back, but I think he's moved pretty early in the off season. Kay, Hatch, Espinal, Wall, and possibly Taylor (health permitted) will be added to the 40 man. I don't see Drury non tendered. He will be back and play the back up IF role.

Travis, Drury, and Maile are optionable but too expensive to keep in AAA, and Urena and Alford are cheap but out of options. Some of these guys have got to go, but I’m guessing a Travis non-tender and Urena DFA are the most likely. Urena in particular has got to go. An out of options Urena is utterly worthless.
jimedmonds Verified Member Posted September 5, 2019 Posted September 5, 2019 who are some good FA targets who can actually get on base at a high clip? I can stomach the losing, I just can't stomach the pathetic .302 team OBP and dearth of any running game. take out Justin Smoak and this team has the worst on base percentage in the entire league.
Orgfiller Old-Timey Member Posted September 5, 2019 Posted September 5, 2019 Here's the notable rule 5 eligible guys that we'll have this offseason: Anthony Kay - acquired in Stroman deal Santiago Espinal - acquired in Steve Pearce deal last May Forrest Wall - acquired in Oh deal, 23 y/o, had good year at AA and promoted to AAA Josh Palacios - 24, had good year in AA in his age 23 season Thomas Hatch - acquired in David Phelps deal Curtis Taylor - acquired in Eric Sogard deal Jake Fishman - older (24) lefty reliever who did well in AA Dany Jimenez - way older (25.7) RHP reliever who posted great numbers in A+ and AA Bryan Baker - 24 RHP reliever, tall, good strikeout numbers but high walks between AA and AAA Kirby Snead - 24 y/o LOOGY (?), immaculate in AA, mediocre in AAA, high groundballs, good strikeouts
Slade Old-Timey Member Posted September 5, 2019 Posted September 5, 2019 We've got a pretty big roster crunch coming, a lot of fringe guys need to be moved or unprotected. With Palacios and Wall moving up they need to make a decision on the OF. No point in carrying Davis, Alford and McKinney. That Grichuk contract keeps looking worse. There's some easy cuts with Travis, Urena, Font, Boshers and maybe Taylor.

I think they really like Font in that openers role and I don't know if they're as willing to let go of Taylor just months after acquiring him. But I could be completely wrong.

We can control him for 4 more years I believe, and since he's joined us he's really been excellent. 26.1 innings, 2.39 BB/9, 12.65 K/9, 3.21 xFIP

I'm not really a big fan of relievers that don't fit the traditional mold. He seems more like a one and done guy, he ate up a few innings this year when we had nobody.
Orgfiller Old-Timey Member Posted September 5, 2019 Posted September 5, 2019 I think the 40-man crunch can be broken down into the following categories: Replaceable relievers Jason Adam Derek Law Justin Shafer Wilmer Font Ryan Tepera Buddy Boshers From this group I think Font and Tepera stay, and there's an outside chance Boshers stays. 6/7th starters or long men Sam Gaviglio Sean Reid-Foley Brock Stewart Thomas Pannone Gaviglio stays, SRF probably stays, Brock Stewart is definitely off and Pannone is gone as soon as anyone moderately better is signed. Third Catchers: Luke Maile Beau Taylor One will probably stay, or both will be replaced by an outside option. Depth outfielders Anthony Alford Billy McKinney Jonathan Davis I think Davis is DFA'd, probably replaced by Palacios. Alford and McKinney are on the brink, barring any other signings they'll stay. Alford probably gets traded for garbage to a bad team. Utility guys Brandon Drury Devon Travis Richard Ureña Ureña and Travis gone for sure, Drury non-tendered and brought back as a minor league deal. All are likely off the 40-man barring a (really) hot month from the latter. Elvis Luciano Elvis Luciano No idea what's done with him. ------------------------------------------------------ Definitely off: 9 Probably off: 1 or 2 Brink: 2 or 3

Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted September 5, 2019 Posted September 5, 2019 I hope they are not so in love with the position players that they ignore that area entirely. Sure, never a bad idea to grab a couple of versatile free agents to either keep or trade deadline bait, whatever makes sense come July

I agree that we'll have 3 catchers but the smart play is probably to get that third guy after the Rule 5 deadline.
glory Old-Timey Member Posted September 6, 2019 Posted September 6, 2019 Alford was a top 50ish prospect in baseball prior to 2018. Even though he hasn't lived up to that the past two years, I don't think the Jays get rid of him. They kept Pompey's corpse around for as long as they possibly could get away with it. Alford will likely be on the 25/26 man roster next year. I hope McKinney is the one they end up moving from, as J. Davis doesn't seem like much of anything but at least he has a 4th of skill set (good D, good speed, hits lefties). McKinney is the man of no tools. I definitely agree with keeping eyes open for offensive help. No way should the team be satisfied with what they have. There's some upside there with the non Vlad/Bo position players, but not nearly enough to think we can't add more. The non tender list might expose a decent player because teams don't want to pay actual money to players anymore.
Dick_Pole Old-Timey Member Posted September 6, 2019 Posted September 6, 2019 This is crunch time for Atkins. A ton of money to spend in an era, just like glory said, no one wants to spend money on players. The premium positions are locked up C, 2B, SS with Vlad and Grichuk being passable defensive options for 3B and CF. As far as the desire to not totally disregard the offense, I get that. But if the team has, say, $50 million in payroll space, I'd much rather see $40 million of that spent on pitching. I can go into 2020 spring looking looking at that roster of position players and not be too upset but the pitching is an absolute mess. Any of the DFA candidates that have been debated on here - including Alford and Drury - not a second thought should be given to any of them if Atkins is competent enough to build a good team with depth with the massive payroll flexibility he has. f*** em. I expect a significantly improved roster going into 2020 and if that has not occurred, Atkins absolutely needs to go.
Dick_Pole Old-Timey Member Posted September 6, 2019 Posted September 6, 2019 My personal priority of needs would be: 1. SP1 2. SP2 3. 3B with defensive skill (Moustakas) 4. SP3 4. CF or big corner OF bat
Laika Community Moderator Posted September 6, 2019 Posted September 6, 2019 Multiple mid-level SP should be signed or acquired (assuming none of the big fish SP will sign here, although Atkins should sincerely try to sway them). Jose Abreu might be a fit? I think they should bring in a 1B/DH especially if Vlad is playing third in 2020. Bringing back Donaldson is interesting to me... give him 2/45 or something like that. I guess he’ll get a QO though and Toronto really isn’t in a position to lose draft picks

We really do need to land a big starter.

In an era where free agents are considering creating their own training camp because there are so many holdouts well into spring training, the conditions have never been better to overcome the "Toronto/Canada effect".
