Unlike Pearce and Granderson, Sogard has been s*** his entire career though. It's unlikely a contending team is going to want to acquire him solely for his bat, it would be for infield cover. And why give up even a C prospect for a rental infield cover player, when you'd likely get a Galvis type with an extra year of control for a similar price?

I wonder if the Phillies would want Sogard, maybe along with someone like Hudson, for VV?

Not sure, but yeah maybe packaging Sogard with a reliever would be the way to go.

If I'm Ross Atkins, I'm creating a powerpoint on Marcus Stroman for the Astros. Their bottom of the rotation is a mess right now.

- 88th percentile fastball spin

- .192 wOBA on his slider and .209 wOBA on his changeup. Get him to throw his secondaries more and he can be a K machine.

- Good career performances against current AL contenders (3.44 ERA against the Red Sox, 3.15 ERA against the Indians).

- Key guys like Gerrit Cole, George Springer, Michael Brantley are all going to be free agents after 2020 or before. These next 2 years could be their chance to go all out to get another championship.

Convince them Stroman is their guy and hopefully get them to overpay and sell low on Whitley, who likely is not going to actually be contributing to their team until at least 1-2 years since it takes time for young pitchers to adjust to the league.

I hope the optimism in this thread is justified. I would hate to see us get a less than optimum return after which this forum will divide into two buckets

Those that will call out Atkins

Or

The apologist who have already started the Atkins defence campaign (I.e. Stroman has bad charachter, Giles was hurt, This is the best deal we could have made, Atkins is unlucky on when he is selling.

Lets see what happens. I hope Atkins does well, I want him to. However I have no confidence in his abilities. Unfortunately.

Whitley may one day be as good as Stro...doubt it. Want more. Tucker+

No Yankees please

I’d be happy if it’s the Yankees just because Stroman is a New York native so I’m sure he will be happy going to a NY team.

Hell, if I’m Atkins and I have similar packages from two different teams, I’m asking Stroman where he wants to go between the two.

I don't see Atkins doing any such thing.

I’m sending him to Minnesota where I know he’s not signing a long term extension, all things equal

Why would anyone care where he wants to go? Get the best prospects, he'll have his choice in year and a half.

Cant remember the last time Yankees gave us a good prospect

Keep Galvis. Signed for next year too. An ideal guy to have around the team.

Sogard is a valuable table setter who I agree with most in that he won't garner much in a trade. May as well keep him.

If Smoak gets moved Vladdy should be our 1st baseman next year.

I wouldnt mind if our infield for next season consisted of

Vladdy 1st

Bichette SS

Biggio 2nd and backing up 1st and 3rd

Freddy, Sogard being a time share at 3rd and available to backup any infield position.

This IMO would be the strength of the team going forward.

Smoak has little to no trade value with the way he's playing, and it a likely candidate to re-sign here at a very cheap deal. Keep Vlad at 3rd.

I don't know why there is a debate with Galvis or Sogard. The trade value is going to be next to nothing. If they stay this year and next as roster depth, I'm fine with that. If they are traded tomorrow, I'm fine with that. The variance between a good Stroman trade and an average Stroman trade is worth like 20 Sogards. That's what the team's focus needs to be on.

This is not the NBA.

If the Astros don't already know all of this, they need to fire their entire front office.

This isn't like in the corporate world, where assets and what they can do for you are often unknown.

No, but they did give us a 36 year old tub of s*** for the best pitcher in baseball.

Buck mentioned scouts all sitting together from the following teams:

Yankees, BoSox, Braves, Cubs, Reds, Dodgers, Rays, and Padres

Scouts names mentioned in attendance Rick Williams (Braves), Bruce Mano (Braves), Jim Henry (Yankees), Ken Kravick (Rays), Frank Wren (Red Sox).

I don't care if they trade him to the Yankees, just please get something good (not Frazier....unless he's the 2nd or 3rd best piece in the deal).

I actually think Stro to the Yanks would be good for baseball. If Stro was an NBA or NFL player he'd be a big star with his personality. He'd fit well in NY.

I’m not a Stroman fan, but I can’t think of a better thing than Stroman being pulled mid inning and turning to dip his cap and bow to the sections of scouts.

44 thru 3 while working around base runners ^^

We aren;t going to get much for Sogard, instead of getting some useless piece i rather sign him to a 1 or 2 year deal to see if he can continue this and become a good utility part time piece. Useless long shot prospect like we got for Pearce, whats the point.

The point is that he's a 33 year old having a career year, and if we really wanted him back, we could re-sign him in the offseason. Right now, he and Galvis are effectively blocking Bichette, so one of them needs to go before we get to see that glorious hair at the MLB level.

Galvis I agree with.

I dont think this organization is itchy to bring up bichette as much as people think. He is doing fine at AAA, but they would rather keep him down for another 2.5 months and get an extra year. Just my impression, I could be wrong.

It's almost as if the Jays have such a plethora of talent in the other 23 roster spots that in order for Bichette to be called up, one of Sogard or Galvis MUST be jettisoned...

There are currently 6 infielders on the team, one of those needs to go for Bichette to come up, it's not about the 25 man roster, it's about how many infield positions there are for people to play. Unless you want to watch more of Brandon Drury's Amazing Outfield Adventures, or have Galvis moved to the pen...

If they wanted Bichette up it's as simple as optioning Brandon Drury.

I don't think they'll do that (unless he gets injured). I expect to see him brought up August 1st at the latest.
