The difference between Gibby 2.0 (2016-18 version) and Montoyo is almost non existent. I was hoping for a Kevin Cash type of turnaround but so far it's been oddly similar. Can't say worse because Montoyo has a lot less talent to work with, but some of his moves don't even make sense from an analytical standpoint (which I thought was the point of bringing in a Tampa guy).

Biggest issue I have with him so far is the bunt with a runner on 2nd and nobody out. That can’t happen. I don’t think Brito batting up in the lineup is a big deal given that the offense is a tire fire.

 

I will say, his handling of the pitching staff has been great. I think that almost without fault he’s pulled guys at the right time, and brought the right relievers in.

Did this happen last night? I didn’t watch last nights game, but Urena also bunted a runner from 2nd to 3rd in the Detroit series.

Yup, top of the 8th, 2-2 game. Urena hits a lead off double, maile is up next and attempts two terrible sac bunts before being allowed to swing away and finally grounding out after what was a pretty decent at bat considering he only had one strike to work with.

 

The lead off hitter was up after maile so we should have been expecting some thunder and not been throwing away outs, but montoyo batted brito leadoff then pinch hit Hansen so our lineup turning over actually resulted in our two worst hitters coming up.

So maybe that's why he bunted, he knew that he was going to put our shittiest hitters at the top of the lineup so we wouldnt be getting a base hit any time soon

Jesus. That’s worse than the Urena bunt. Maile is probably more likely to get a hit swinging than to successfully drop a sac bunt. The FO needs to address this. There is no reason to bunt with a runner on 2nd and nobody out.
