do you guys find that as you get older (i.e. mid-30s onward), your once encyclopedic memory starts losing a few random pages such as your girlfriend's father's name, the name of the street intersecting the one that you live on, and which Toronto Blue Jay once struck out 4 times in a game before refusing a kid's autograph and then cursing out the kid's dad on video?

trying to remember for the life of me who it was? for some reason, I think it was a Latino outfielder and a known hothead, but it doesn't seem like something Mondesi or Jose Cruz Jr would do. Definitely wasn't Bautista

anyway, I don't mind watching hot trash because I find the epic struggle hilarious in a somewhat sado-masochistic kind of day. Like watching JPA and Pillar at bat is so grotesque, you almost admire the comical beauty of them flailing at a 0-2 pitch that everyone in the stadium knows is going to end up two feet out of the strike zone.

the ones that irritated me were the guys who were pegged as having massive potential, failed massively to live up to it, but showed just an inkling of their ability to give you a false sense of hope. Funny how they were all outfielders with incorrigibly awful plate discipline

- Jose Cruz Jr.

- Colby Rasmus

- Travis Snider

You're thinking of Alex Rios.

Also an inaccurate description of events. That kid's dad deserved to be cussed out.

oh yes. thank you. Alex Rios. can't believe that that was well over 10 years ago.

as for my inaccurate description of the events, lol yup - just watched the video. goes to show how recollection of events can also change over time.

Sources say Pillar on his way to the Giants for Juan De Paula. Alford on his way up to Toronto.

What sources are these?

I'm not seeing this anywhere...

The 2019 Lottery Ticket: Juan De Paula, RHP: This young right-hander has potential but has also spent four seasons in short-season ball and is with his third organization after being traded twice. He has the potential for three average or better offerings and shows good athleticism on the mound. But he also exudes a high level of energy that needs to be channeled effectively. De Paula has seen his walk rate increase each year and with Staten Island (last summer), he looked like he was trying to guide the ball rather than trusting his athleticism and delivery. He was also slowing down his delivery and tipping his pitches when he threw his off-speed stuff. The raw potential is here for something promising but De Paula also has a long way to go despite his success in short-season ball in 2018.

Oh, it's April 1st and saskjaysfan made a funny.

Ah f***

I'll hand it to him, that was pretty good

I'd expect that the dinosaurs here would have mentioned some also-rans for the mid-90's teams. Not only were they bad, but also a real letdown and reality check for a kid who grew up only knowing winning baseball.

Darren Hall (only because he was saddled to be the Ward/Henke replacement and the first of many failed closers)

Pretty much any other bullpen pitcher during this era

Danny Darwin

Carlos Garcia

Joe Carter needs to be on it, or no player that had more war/162 than Carter can be on it.

Eyeballing the totals -

Erik Hinske had more WAR (as a Jay) then Joe Carter

Adam Lind, Pat Borders and Josh Towers had more WAR/162 as a Jay

And Of Course!!!

Kevin Pillar - ~10 Fangraphs WAR as a Blue Jay

Joe Carter ~7.5 Fangraphs WAR as a Blue jay

So if the criteria is a kind of over rated player, who had one good year, a couple of OK ones and then tanked, hurt the team and was horrible to watch, and overrated by casuals. Joe Carter is that guy.

My understanding was that this was aboit who we hated to watch hit, not the most overrated Jay? WAR totals could play a factor but doesn’t mean just because one had 10 WAR and one had 7 WAR I should hate one more.

Agreed this is a 'hate' thread.

1. Except for 1991 I really hated to watch Carter.

2. Being over-rated and being disappointing after 1 or 2 good years seems to be a hallmark of some of the hated players... Hinske, Pillar, Lind, Cruz, Rios.

Carter was the ultimate in this respect. As soon as '92 it could be argued he was hitting too high in the order. Definitely in 93. From 93-97 his WAR was ~0. He got increasingly worse but no one seemed to care or even notice. How could you not hate him? They built the offense around him.

It is literally like if they built the offense around Kevin Pillar. If they hit him lead off and signed Keuchel and Kimbrel to team with Pillar the leadoff hitter.

Assuming we're basing this on batting, which is where the justified Pillar hate comes from, I can't believe nobody mentioned Rajai "throw me a breaking ball with two strikes and I will swing even if it bounces 25' from home plate" Davis.

Because Rajai mashed against lefties, and he was the best/most fun baserunner that I've ever seen on the Blue Jays - when he did get on base, which was probably against a lefty.

No way, Deadpool makes a good point, Rajai Davis was one of the most infuriating hitters to watch, ever. Not only while he was flailing away at garbage, he made so many other really stupid mistakes, including on the basepaths. He's lucky he had like 70 grade speed because he was a bad baserunner.

Definitely, I couldn't take another year of Davis.

Anyone remember the playing days of one Jason Phillips?

This dude miraculously was able to accumulate -1.5 fWAR is only 80 games played for the jays across 2 seasons
