glory Old-Timey Member Posted January 31, 2019 Posted January 31, 2019 I'm happy with this. I wouldn't be surprised if by mid-May or early June our IF is Vlad, Galvis, Drury Smoak. Shatkins loves Gurriel. They might use him all over the field (our version of Marwin), but I don't think he loses playing time to Galvis of all players. Vlad, Gurriel, Drury at 3B-SS-2B is what I'm expecting. If Drury learns how to hit then maybe he can be moved to 1B and Gurriel can shift to 2B once they trade Smoak.

Sorrow Verified Member Posted January 31, 2019 Posted January 31, 2019 They can love Gurriel all they want but if he's an 80-90 wRC+ bat with piss poor D he won't be taking playing time from anyone.
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted January 31, 2019 Posted January 31, 2019 Gurriel obviously has red flags but I was encouraged by his year and career trajectory. Age 21 he mashed in Cuba. Age 22 he didn't play as he defected. Age 23 he was horrible in High A and AA, seemingly he was getting back into the swing of things. That's two years where he didn't play or looked like s*** because of the time off. Age 24 he turned it all around by hitting in AA, AAA and then the majors. Defense and plate discipline are definitely concerns entering his age 25 season but if he shows improvement again he's a position-flexible 2 WAR player. Steamer has him pegged for 1.6 in 403 ABs. I'm probably higher on him than most on this board.
Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted January 31, 2019 Posted January 31, 2019 Yeah I don't think we'll ever see Drury at 1st base. Set positions are a thing of the past. Drury will likely see time at 2b, 3b, of, 1b, dh. Assuming the bat is somewhat close to 100 wrc+ 3b will not be vlad's alone, we should expect vlad to have a fair number of games at dh
glory Old-Timey Member Posted January 31, 2019 Posted January 31, 2019 Yeah I don't think we'll ever see Drury at 1st base. With the way the game is evolving, I think we will see a very fluid roster with guys (except for the stars like hopefully Vlad, Bo, etc) playing everywhere. Of course if Drury's bat doesn't improve then it won't be an option, I'm just saying if he takes a step forward then it becomes an option. He can still cover 2B, 3B, etc. Just makes the lineup more versatile. Plus it means I won't have to see Tellez play 1B, which is a bonus.
Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted January 31, 2019 Posted January 31, 2019 I mean as a defensive substitution or whatever - sure...but the context was that Drury would slide in as our starting 1st basemen after we trade Smoak (with Gurriel at 2nd). Starting a guy with a wRC+ of 100 at first base regularly will always be a terrible idea. Ask the Rockies how that turned out.
Angrioter Old-Timey Member Posted January 31, 2019 Posted January 31, 2019 Gurriel can't hit or catch the baseball
Carlos Danger Old-Timey Member Posted January 31, 2019 Posted January 31, 2019 All this talk about Gurriels D. The conversation should be about Travis. His D really sucks and his hitting sucked last year also. Travis is a liability in the field. Gurriel will be fine.
Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted January 31, 2019 Posted January 31, 2019 Gurriel can't hit or catch the baseball Cubans suck, right Ang

I see Drury as a guy that will start 50 games at 2B, 30 games at 3B, 10 games at 1B, 10 games OF, 10 games DH - something along those lines.
bones10 Old-Timey Member Posted January 31, 2019 Posted January 31, 2019 Curious to see how Galvis's power translates to the dome, might help him out a little bit. Also did everyone forget Travis is still on the team, DFA when?

JaysFan4Ever Verified Member Posted January 31, 2019 Posted January 31, 2019 Travis might be the odd man out whether he turns it around with the bat, and glove, or not, since he still has options left. I don't see them DFA him, unless he sucks out loud, and they think he'll go unclaimed, and/or can't get even a lottery ticket in return.

Get him an outfield glove and have him play the corners there too. Given his skill set it's not unreasonable to think he could be a league-average hitter with above-average D at 2B and maybe 3B, and acceptable D at SS, LF, and RF.

Did you not learn anything in the last 10 years and being a super hech fan boi 10 years ago? Gurriel has way too many red flags to overcome both offensively and defensively. His likely outcomes are probably something like... 70% trash, 15% serviceable mlb player, 15% slightly above average player? Hes not going to double his walk rate, maybe he can cut his k rate a bit and have like a 90-95 wRC+, but he will most likely always be terrible at defense.

That sounds pretty good for what BTS is describing, dumbass.

When he showed up at ST 2 years ago, and he ran out to stand in line for the national anthem, the first thing that entered my mind was, Who is that centerfielder? 3 weeks to ST. Whoo hoo!!!!!!!!
