You're giving them too much credit, the only casuals who'll be upset are those who like his being Canadian and a veteran, but if I had to guess I'd say the majority will be pleased because he's the guy who just ran a sub .200 batting average.

A few wins is pushing it too, given that Martin's replacement Danny Jansen is probably already one of the better catchers in the game. We'll live with Maile or McGuire as his backup.

This is what's best for Danny Jansen's development. No sense in holding onto Russell in a lost year if we can get a couple moderately interesting prospects by eating his salary. We are eating his salary either way!

Brock Stewart, the Dodgers version of Julian Merryweather as the return is my guess

Yeah I like Martin but this move makes sense. He can still start on a playoff team looking at who the starting catchers were for the LCS teams in 2018, and having him be a back up catcher on a rebuilding team probably didn't appeal to him. Jays can now give Jansen the keys and still have two other catchers on their 40 man.

 

I guess this is the 40 man roster move for Phelps.

This is what's best for Danny Jansen's development. No sense in holding onto Russell in a lost year if we can get a couple moderately interesting prospects by eating his salary. We are eating his salary either way!

 

Also from a PR point of view it's a good move, move the likeable veteran with whom the team has a good relationship with to a top team so he'll get a chance to be in the thick of contention once again, and not to a direct or even distant (Astros) rival.
