DigitalRock Old-Timey Member Posted January 11, 2019 Posted January 11, 2019 https://www.sportsnet.ca/baseball/mlb/blue-jays-trading-catcher-russell-martin-dodgers/ Curious on the return.
Dr. Dinger Old-Timey Member Posted January 11, 2019 Posted January 11, 2019 Bow down to Atkins, kids.
BallsDeep Verified Member Posted January 11, 2019 Posted January 11, 2019 Surely we're eating a big chunk of that contract
z3r0s Old-Timey Member Posted January 11, 2019 Posted January 11, 2019 Thanks for the memories Russ. I loved watching you play. Makes perfect sense, glad it happened, but still doesn't feel good
rydermike Verified Member Posted January 11, 2019 Posted January 11, 2019 Waiting to see all the reactions from the casuals who will base it off Martin's year 1 production and big name rather than the downward trend in production
bones10 Old-Timey Member Posted January 11, 2019 Posted January 11, 2019 We a 100 loss team right about now?
z3r0s Old-Timey Member Posted January 11, 2019 Posted January 11, 2019 We a 100 loss team right about now? Trading Russ doesn't hurt us a bunch in wins with Jansen starting. He actually might start more which could theoretically be a boon.
Pendleton Old-Timey Member Posted January 11, 2019 Posted January 11, 2019 Sorry to see him go, but glad he's going to a contender. Will be pleasantly surprised if the return is anything to get excited about.
Orgfiller Old-Timey Member Posted January 11, 2019 Posted January 11, 2019 Waiting to see all the reactions from the casuals who will base it off Martin's year 1 production and big name rather than the downward trend in production You're giving them too much credit, the only casuals who'll be upset are those who like his being Canadian and a veteran, but if I had to guess I'd say the majority will be pleased because he's the guy who just ran a sub .200 batting average.
Superdood Verified Member Posted January 11, 2019 Posted January 11, 2019 Sorry to see him go, but glad he's going to a contender. Will be pleasantly surprised if the return is anything to get excited about. Just a couple low level prospects is my guess. Either way it clears the way for Jansen to start more games so i'm happy.
Orgfiller Old-Timey Member Posted January 11, 2019 Posted January 11, 2019 Wishing Russ all the best, his signing went as good as it could have, great player for us and he was extremely likeable. Good to see him go (back) to a contender.
TheHurl Site Manager Posted January 11, 2019 Posted January 11, 2019 Dodgers still in on Realmuto i hear
DigitalRock Old-Timey Member Posted January 11, 2019 Author Posted January 11, 2019 We a 100 loss team right about now? Yeah but Janssen is better than Russ plus we should get to see vlad finally. Will be a long season.
Krylian Old-Timey Member Posted January 11, 2019 Posted January 11, 2019 Jays will eat a large portion of his salary and get 2 minor league players back
Daniel Labude Jays Centre Contributor Posted January 11, 2019 Posted January 11, 2019 We a 100 loss team right about now? Getting rid of Martin just bumped us up a few wins not dropping us 10 wins

This. I think most casuals think Russ Martin sucks because of his low average. I suspect most think he was a horrible signing also. Casuals are dumb.
Orgfiller Old-Timey Member Posted January 11, 2019 Posted January 11, 2019 Getting rid of Martin just bumped us up a few wins not dropping us 10 wins A few wins is pushing it too, given that Martin's replacement Danny Jansen is probably already one of the better catchers in the game. We'll live with Maile or McGuire as his backup.
Dr. Dinger Old-Timey Member Posted January 11, 2019 Posted January 11, 2019 This is what's best for Danny Jansen's development. No sense in holding onto Russell in a lost year if we can get a couple moderately interesting prospects by eating his salary. We are eating his salary either way!

L54 Old-Timey Member Posted January 11, 2019 Posted January 11, 2019 Brock Stewart, the Dodgers version of Julian Merryweather as the return is my guess
glory Old-Timey Member Posted January 11, 2019 Posted January 11, 2019 Yeah I like Martin but this move makes sense. He can still start on a playoff team looking at who the starting catchers were for the LCS teams in 2018, and having him be a back up catcher on a rebuilding team probably didn't appeal to him. Jays can now give Jansen the keys and still have two other catchers on their 40 man. I guess this is the 40 man roster move for Phelps.
Daniel Labude Jays Centre Contributor Posted January 11, 2019 Posted January 11, 2019 Would be funny if we ate the whole contract and got someone like DJ Peters back
Superdood Verified Member Posted January 11, 2019 Posted January 11, 2019 SS Ronny Brito and RHP Andrew Sopko are the return, it's official.

No sense in holding onto Russell in a lost year if we can get a couple moderately interesting prospects by eating his salary. We are eating his salary either way! Also from a PR point of view it's a good move, move the likeable veteran with whom the team has a good relationship with to a top team so he'll get a chance to be in the thick of contention once again, and not to a direct or even distant (Astros) rival.
TheHurl Site Manager Posted January 11, 2019 Posted January 11, 2019 This. I think most casuals think Russ Martin sucks because of his low average. I suspect most think he was a horrible signing also. Casuals are dumb. Maple boner evens it out though. I would be good with the deal being something like Jays eat $5M, get no players in return but max International Spending
Slade Old-Timey Member Posted January 11, 2019 Posted January 11, 2019 Gotta imagine we are eating at least $15M+ on this deal but it had to happen.
bones10 Old-Timey Member Posted January 11, 2019 Posted January 11, 2019 Trading Russ doesn't hurt us a bunch in wins with Jansen starting. He actually might start more which could theoretically be a boon. Mostly saying this because of the overall philosophy the FO is taking this offseason, which is fine, but we're gonna suck
