xposbrad Verified Member Posted January 14, 2019 Posted January 14, 2019 This seems like an awful lot of outrage and combativeness for a 35 year old 1 WAR player on a one year deal in a rebuilding season. Can you all please try caring less? Well according to some posters here, we were supposed to get a good prospect if we ate most of his salary lol
Captain Adama Old-Timey Member Posted January 14, 2019 Posted January 14, 2019 Well according to some posters here, we were supposed to get a good prospect if we ate most of his salary lol Pretty sure this was as good as a prospect package as these "posters" were expecting.
glory Old-Timey Member Posted January 14, 2019 Posted January 14, 2019 This seems like an awful lot of outrage and combativeness for a 35 year old 1 WAR player on a one year deal in a rebuilding season. Can you all please try caring less? Especially since this trade was done for Jansen. It's not like they traded Martin so that Maile and Jeff Mathis could share catching duties. It was to open up a spot for a damn good catching prospect who is ready to contribute right now, among all the other benefits that have been mentioned. Tulo was dumped so that Gurriel could get a look at short, not Darwin Barney and Ryan Goins. The team is developing prospects and then dumping vets that are clogging up spots. Fairly standard stuff. Even though Brito is a long shot to ever been a big leaguer and Sopko lacks upside, that was actually more than I expected for Martin. We still have Morales to provide vetrin presents (...and I'm trying to find a positive for him still being on the roster).
Boxcar Old-Timey Member Posted January 14, 2019 Posted January 14, 2019 I would like to release a statement on behalf of myself: I would like to formally apologize to the BJMB community at large for my grating and confrontational behaviour last night. I would like to offer two things to explain my actions but please bear in mind that I am not attempting to excuse them. 1) I do not cope well with posts that contain more than three LMAOs unless I deem that the material in question is indeed quite hilarious. 2) I later essentially gave birth to an anaconda. You would not believe the girth of the result of my bodily function. I would like to make special apologies to: 1) My colleague and idol Nick, who I recognize as a non-sarcastic huge smarty pants and a cherished member of this community. 2) King aka Big Ry, one of my all time favourite contributors to this place. I am sorry for employing ageism against you. You were correct to call me out. 3) Metafour. While I do consider you to be a bit of an *******, I can recognize that most of the time you are an ******* for the right reasons. I escalated the discussion for no reason and got pedantic about things that don't matter. 4) Spanky99. I love you. Anyone one else I offended with my asshattery, please know that I am working to curb this behaviour for the future. I also want to point out that my opinion on the trade didn't hinge on the "mentoring" angle, I just felt it was a small benefit to keeping Martin. I am sorry if I did not communicate this sentiment very well. Thank you for your time.
metafour Verified Member Posted January 14, 2019 Posted January 14, 2019 You know what else is worth nothing? Two useless prospects. Hmmmmmmm...useless or also useless. Better make sure I pick the right one! Your lack of vision is comical. No prospect is "useless". Prospects are currency, which means that they don't need to actually even play for your major league team to provide some level of utility. We traded Dawel Lugo for Cliff Pennington, and then the Diamondbacks were able to move Lugo for half a season of freaking JD Martinez in a contending year. Was Dawel Lugo ever a top prospect? Absolutely not, he was a middle infielder with some intriguing (maybe) tools...kind of like the kid we just picked up. Here's the part you're missing: maybe Brito's power surge shows up even more next season, in which case even if he's a complete fluke he can be used as a piece in a potential trade elsewhere. Small deals like that over time build an MLB team. JB Woodman was a useless prospect who we were able to pawn off onto the Cardinals for a half decent MLB shortstop. Your stance is nonsensical because whatever value that Martin provides is completely irrelevant to a team in OUR position. I'm playing up your "mentorship" angle because that is literally the only semi-valid argument that you can make for why we should have considered keeping him. His 1-2 WAR does absolutely nothing to shift our team in either direction. His "versatility"? Why the hell does a team that has no chance of competing need a 36 year old who can double as a crappy third baseman? Again, this "value" is pointless on OUR team. The prospects, even if they turn out to be total duds, on the other hand ARE useful because we are in a point wherein we need to be hoarding as many prospects as possible. These minor prospects can be used in the future to make minor deals that can patch up a potentially competitive roster.
TheHurl Site Manager Posted January 14, 2019 Posted January 14, 2019 This is like arguing about dark matter. Is this because Russell is black? Racist!

SaskJaysFan_2 Verified Member Posted January 14, 2019 Posted January 14, 2019 This means nothing, plenty of international prospects have signed for 2+ million (especially in the last couple years) whom have turned out to be absolute dogshit very quickly. Examples: Kevin Maitan Alfredo Rodriguez Luis Almanzar Jairo Beras Jonatan Machado This list could be much longer. I didn't say he is the first prospect to take $2M. I am saying that he was at least one-time thought of pretty highly, and the fact that he is only 19-years old with decent scouting reports leads me to categorize him as a potential decent prospect on the farm. I would take a 19-year old who signed for $2M over a 19-year old whom signed for nothing if they have the same numbers in the minors. Because mo 'money means mo' potential. Even you have to agree the numbers show a strong correlation between signing $$$ and success in professional baseball.

I think you're way overvaluing how much an int'l prospect signs for, especially if they have the same numbers in the minors. Like, if both their numbers are garbage, then who cares? They both suck. Brito had a K rate of over 30% in rookie ball. Chances are, he won't ever be anything. Still an understandable move though, if he ever does cut down his K rate he could be a guy. I just won't hold my breath.
