Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted February 19, 2019 Posted February 19, 2019 Sometimes veterans are the biggest *******s in baseball. I remember when AA would sign absolute toilet veterans to be the 25th man on the team because of their presents. In 2012 we actually wasted a roster spot on a cranky 45-year-old Omar Vizquel. That version of Vizquel probably couldn't crack the starting lineup of my beer league softball team but we wasted a roster spot and money on him anyway. He proceeded to bitch about the team the entire year and was generally viewed as a negative in the clubhouse. He also put up -1 WAR in 160 ABs.

Dick_Pole Old-Timey Member Posted February 19, 2019 Posted February 19, 2019 Shut up losers. Vizquel's the best shot we have of seeing someone inducted in the HOF with a Jays cap for a while.
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted February 19, 2019 Posted February 19, 2019 Mark DeRosa, David Dellucci, Kevin Millar, etc. Ughhhhh Yeah but Kevin Millar would take a shot of Jack before Red Sox playoff games. The guy was a natural leader.
Laika Community Moderator Posted February 19, 2019 Posted February 19, 2019 Mark DeRosa, David Dellucci, Kevin Millar, etc. Ughhhhh Can we include Maicer Iztirus please

Spanky__99 Old-Timey Member Posted February 19, 2019 Posted February 19, 2019 (edited) I went to a Padres game at the beginning of last season and they were all talking about how they loved Hosmer's leadership abilities and they'd targeted him to help with the expected influx of younger players over the next few years. And if he provided somewhere close to his usual odd year Royals performances they'd be very happy with him. Even though the contract was an overpay (and looks even worse now) they really wanted him and so they decided to give him an above market value contract. Considering the payroll flexibility from having the majority of the team built on prospects, and how much they wanted him, I can understand why they did it. Even in a worst case scenario where he remains even year Hosmer (i.e. zero WAR a season) the wasted cash shouldn't really harm them too much as the contract is front loaded. Of course if that did happen they'd get a lot of stick for paying $20m a year for veteran presence! Who fans??? That line of thinking is absurd, whomever you spoke to isn't quite analytically ept, seriously. Edited February 19, 2019 by Spanky99
Spanky__99 Old-Timey Member Posted February 19, 2019 Posted February 19, 2019 The best part of the 'vetrin presents' argument for Hosmer is that he's apparently a giant *******. lol
Spanky__99 Old-Timey Member Posted February 19, 2019 Posted February 19, 2019 Hosmer is possibly one of the worst leaders a baseball team could have. This is a bad combination: - Seems like a close-minded idiot - Seems to exude alpha-male leadership traits There's nothing like a born leader who, thanks to charisma or traditional good looks or god-given talent, can successfully convince his followers to adhere to sub-optimal methods of practice. This is Joe Carter, guy was a prick.

Gaawd... is that, is that Trevor Bauers... *Stone Cold Entry Music* lol... He likes to begin his pitch design sessions at 4:20 p.m. He throws three sets of 23 pitches; add them up. He wears T-shirts that read bofa, which ostensibly stands for Bauer Outage For America but is really a reference to male body parts that, unlike the brain, come in sets of two. That was a fun read... dude's a quirky guy, but a legit alpha. lol. The effectiveness of his slider was further proof, to him, that he had always been on the right path. “These tiny little margins were worth two full runs on my ERA, and however many millions of dollars in surplus value,” he says. “I always believed in my methods wholeheartedly, and that I would have success. Didn’t have any doubt at all. It’s mostly just a nice feeling, like: I did it my way—and f--- you.” Edited February 20, 2019 by Spanky99

Pendleton Old-Timey Member Posted February 20, 2019 Posted February 20, 2019 Sounds like Jon Gray had an Aaron Sanchez type off season. Gray said Monday that he reported to camp at 235 pounds after dedicating himself to heavy lifting in the offseason in addition to "eating anything and everything," Patrick Saunders of The Denver Post reports. Analysis:Gray tipped the scales at as few as 209 pounds at one point last season, so his weight increase is fairly significant. While adding that kind of mass could been seen as a negative development for most players, it may be beneficial for the 6-foot-4 Gray, who boasts the frame to carry the extra pounds. Rather than any change in his physique, Gray's ability to bounce back from a rough 2018 campaign may hinge on his ability to gain more mental focus in tight spots. Opposing batters slashed .306/.379/.506 against Gray when at least one runner was on base last season, saddling him with a subpar 67.9 percent strand rate. The Rockies are tentatively penciling Gray in as their No. 4 starter behind Kyle Freeland, German Marquez and Tyler Anderson.

Pendleton Old-Timey Member Posted February 20, 2019 Posted February 20, 2019 Lmao @ the Rockies Don't worry, it's only tentative...he could still wind up back down in AAA. Seriously though, can Shatkins rescue this guy from Colorado already?
glory Old-Timey Member Posted February 20, 2019 Posted February 20, 2019 Stroman for Gray makes a lot of sense now.

I guess this is the time for the "best shape of his life" tropes but Jon Gray adding weight probably isn't going to do anything for his performance. It will be a convenient excuse when he reverts to form, though.

Frag Verified Member Posted February 20, 2019 Posted February 20, 2019 (edited) I get the sense that the Angels will be going after Keuchel. He would fill an area of need, and push them further towards playoff contention (poor Mike Trout). Speaking of free agents, where do you think Harper will sign? Edited February 20, 2019 by Frag
