Pendleton Old-Timey Member Posted December 4, 2019 Posted December 4, 2019 Loving this free agent action Had a feeling we would see some Jays news today but perhaps that will consist of missing out on Wheeler.
saskjayfan Old-Timey Member Posted December 4, 2019 Posted December 4, 2019 Jeff Passan @JeffPassan Right-hander Zack Wheeler and the Philadelphia Phillies are in agreement on a five-year deal worth more than $100 million, sources tell ESPN. I'm interested to hear the final terms on this one...well that dream is over.
Ray Verified Member Posted December 4, 2019 Posted December 4, 2019 Twitter is saying its 5 years and just under $120M.
z3r0s Old-Timey Member Posted December 4, 2019 Posted December 4, 2019 well this year's OS is not boring, that's for sure.
Orgfiller Old-Timey Member Posted December 4, 2019 Posted December 4, 2019 Zack Wheeler went from "not sure if it's worth it to sign him at 4/72 + losing a second round pick" to 5 years over $100M plus the pick attached. His agent did very well for him and this offseason has been crazy, a far cry from the last couple.
Orgfiller Old-Timey Member Posted December 4, 2019 Posted December 4, 2019 Twitter is saying its 5 years and just under $120M. Jesus that's like 5/125-130 with the pick attached. That is a LOT of money for someone who may or may not be actually elite.

We likely would've had to given him the Corbin contract to actually get him, and I'm not entirely sure that would've been a good decision.
glory Old-Timey Member Posted December 4, 2019 Posted December 4, 2019 I wasn't expecting the Jays to sign Wheeler anyway, but if it's anywhere near $120m over five years, then I'm not holding my breath on the Jays doing anything significant. The other thread is selling me on Lindbolm so maybe that's a good thing.

This makes the Corbin contract look like a steal, he was a guy coming off a nearly 6 win season when he entered free agency.
Ray Verified Member Posted December 4, 2019 Posted December 4, 2019 5 years, $118M is the official number
saskjayfan Old-Timey Member Posted December 4, 2019 Posted December 4, 2019 This makes the Corbin contract look like a steal, he was a guy coming off a nearly 6 win season when he entered free agency. yeah, but he didn't have 6 wins combined in the previous 3. Wheeler and Corbin were the same pitcher this year.
BTS Community Moderator Posted December 4, 2019 Posted December 4, 2019 5/118 + the comp pick value. Hard pass.

That's only true of you look at FIP-based WAR and think Wheeler has a sticky skill set for suppressing homeruns on flyballs. If I had to give one of the two a CY vote for 2019 it would be Corbin without really thinking twice.
jerb Verified Member Posted December 4, 2019 Posted December 4, 2019 Ken Rosenthal @Ken_Rosenthal #WhiteSox’s offer to Wheeler was for MORE than the $118M he will receive from the #Phillies, sources tell The Athletic. As @MarcCarig said, Wheeler’s wife is from New Jersey, and that proximity was an important consideration in his decision.

You're completely discounting Wheeler's development potential. 5 118 is a long ways from cheap, but I think he will earn every penny.

One of the few times in their history where the White Sox are prepared to spend big, and they get turned down. Gotta hurt a little bit.

They just acquired the top FA catcher who is an elite framer and adding Wheeler would have been a huge boost to their team even at that price.

I was just responding to you saying that Corbin and Wheeler were the same pitcher last year. But yeah, you're mostly right. If I'm committing to Zack Wheeler for 5 years I'm probably not assuming he takes a leap forward in his age-30 season.
Grant77 Old-Timey Member Posted December 4, 2019 Posted December 4, 2019 If we indeed went to 6 figures for Wheeler then I am satisfied with the effort from the FO. This contract is just too much and I'm glad we didn't match or exceed it.

He has so many above average pitches, yet the results don't seem to back them up. He doesn't have that one unhittable pitch like a lot of top pitchers do, so maybe that's hurting him a little. Maybe he just tends to lose it for an inning where he can't stop the bleeding, then is dominant the rest of the game.

TheHurl Site Manager Posted December 4, 2019 Posted December 4, 2019 This seems like a guy that the Rays would get a ton of value out of. And he goes from a team that is not investing in Mental conditioning to another team that is not investing in it. Interesting signing for sure. I love seeing the Phillies blow money. Nats fans have to be s***ing right now with Braves and Phils both making big financial moves and the Nats still not rumoured to be the favourite for either Stras or Rendon (although I still think they sign one). NL East is the new AL East but without the front office smarts.

It looks like we're either going to have to overpay either in $$ or prospect capital for any significant pitching this year. https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2019/12/orioles-trade-dylan-bundy-angels.html

If we offered the same deal as the Phillies there’d be zero reason he’d pick us over them.

I just don't think this FO has the ability to move any "low unproven product" for even an mid tier like Bundy.

Also im pretty sure Chase Anderson's 8m salary had something to do with Milwaukees incentive to move him for basically 0.
