Yeah, Hicks is really good, very underrated. But 7 years is still a long time in today's landscape. Wonder if Cashman went for more years to get a lower AAV for tax purposes. That would be the only explanation that makes sense since Hicks is not the most durable player.

I just don't get it man, how is Cashman doing it? He gets everything, first Severino and now Hicks. Judge better looking for a Stanton like deal.

Hicks was 5 fWAR player last year despite injuries and his AAV will be $10.5MM. I get that he's 29 but really thought any deal with him would start at $20MM per year.

Maybe they should look to extend Stroman this is probably the lowest his value will ever be and it should be less AAV than Severino.

Just don't understand how the Yanks get a steal of a deal on Hicks. He could have easily gotten more AAV on the open market. Yanks win again. He put up over 8 war over the last 2 years alone.

He doesn't have to be anywhere near as good as he is now in any year to be worth that contract. For a 7 year deal, it's remarkably low risk for the Yanks.

This is dumb. With another 3-4 win season in 2019 Hicks should have been looking at at least 4/60 next offseason.

He probably sacrificed some AAV, but not all free agents are after the most money. Hicks probably just really loved New York and is comfortable. Hard to say no to $70M at a place you love to play.

I doubt that, more likely his agent is just really really bad. It shouldn't be that hard to explain to your client how much they are worth.

His agency is CAA. I’m sure they wanted him to test out free agency so he could get the best deal. Maybe he just told them to get a deal done even if it sacrifices some dollars. Not entirely uncommon.

Yeah, I wonder if he got a no trade clause?

That's a good question, as he just mentioned on TV that he wants to win a WS and Championships, I assume he does.

He'll be 30 next offseason when he'll be a FA. An OF like Michael Brantley only got 2 years/$32 million this offseason. If he suffered a serious injury in 2019, he likely doesn't get much next offseason. I would take the guaranteed $70 million in this type of market to stay with an organization like the Yankees, who likely will win a World Series or two during that time frame.

I don't think Hicks did that bad. He's a late bloomer so he he likely had one chance to cash in and rather than banking on a big year and going for a 4 for 80 type of deal like Lorenzo Cain or something he took a discount to secure the big payday. If he got hurt this year or had a bad year he's looking at a 1 or 2 year deal. I think he's probably going to regress some anyway, he just had a monster year that I don't think he'll replicate again.

And like MikeM said, if he signs a 5 year deal he probably doesn't get much in his age 34 and 35 seasons anyway. He projects to be not much better than replacement value in those years. If he tears it up from now until he's 35 (which I highly doubt) he probably only gives up 20 million or so? I think he did fine.

The AAV is low, but in terms of total dollars, I think he did fine. Like you said, he was comfortable leavign $10-$15M on the table for access to guaranteed security earlier. He's set for life now.

He has 9 more years on his deal and a full NTC. Even Cashman won't be able to get out of that deal. Love it when the Yanks make a mistake like that. Dude is going to fall off hard the second half of that contract, if not sooner. Of course that's chump change to the Yankees, but still.

In what everyone and their mother considers a down year Stanton was still a 4+ win player lol. He's gonna be fine and the Yankees of all teams can afford to pay him above market value if he does decline quickly.

I was just trying to find some quick decline comparisons for Stanton and was looking at McGwire's page.

The steroid era was f***ing bonkers. Of McGwire's last 4 seasons, ages 34-37, his very last 2 were basically half years. He hit 32 and 29 homers in those years, after 70 and 65 the two years prior.

So in the twilight of his career Mark McGwire was hitting dingers at roughly a SIXTY-FIVE (65) HOME RUN PER 650 PLATE APPEARANCE PACE!!!!

What he did in 2018 won't be relevant in 2021-27 when he's in his 30's and his bat speed eventually starts to decline.

Of course Brian Cashman is so great that Stanton will somehow be amazing until the final year of his deal just to piss us off.
