Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted May 2, 2019 Posted May 2, 2019 Career FB%: 52.1% 2019 FB%: 46.7% They've already started throwing him more. And despite that, he's still about league average offensively. He's fine. I guess if all we expect is for him to be a league average bat. I think his new contract suggests the hope that he'll be 10-20% above average.

He usually gets better as the season goes on anyways. Career OPS in Apr/March is .646. Starting June on, he's been a career .800+ OPS bat. The fact that he's more or less been league average early on is a good sign, and this is despite the adjustments the pitchers are making around him.

He has consistently been awful in March/April....which is kind of odd. I don't think there's a lot of consistency in splits by month.

Olerud363 Old-Timey Member Posted May 3, 2019 Posted May 3, 2019 Come on guys, we can still make a run for the playoffs... we got Vlad! (Edit) I am being neurotic.. .but just a bit worried at how wildly Guerrero is swing, and that the contact ability hasn't shown up. I can't tell the difference between a Teoscar Hernandez at bat and Vladimir Guerrero right now. If they can lay off the curve balls out of the zone and the fastballs high out of the zone they will do much better. Vladimir Guerrero Jr. (a fat man who can't lay off crappy breaking stuff in the dirt and high fast balls) is not going to change things unless he changes. It's only 5 games. I know that.
Olerud363 Old-Timey Member Posted May 3, 2019 Posted May 3, 2019 I'm not trying to be dramatic. Just also want to describe the situation as it is. 1 week ago worst possible scenario on offense would be Guerrero not only struggles but the contact ability and strike zone judge isn't there. He looks like Teoscar Hernandez. That is what happened.

Olerud363 Old-Timey Member Posted May 3, 2019 Posted May 3, 2019 Trade him. He's done. He's not done... I think I've just started to come to realize that the Delgado Scenario could happen here. I just can't believe how much he's been swinging and missing. Didn't expect that. God Damn it. Can't we have nice things?? Didn't expect him to light the world on fire. Expected good at bats. Great bat control. R.A. Dickey -- Expected the pitch of the century. The knuckleball with crazy movement that could be controlled. After the first start the knuckleball didn't have crazy movement, couldn't be controlled, and just floated out of the zone. Never changed. Though he did occasionally get decent results. VGJ - expected bit fat Ichiro. Awesome bat control. Never swing at a ball. And.. so far 1 week of Teoscar Hernandez JR

Barkerfan23 Verified Member Posted May 3, 2019 Posted May 3, 2019 The balls on this guy. He’s been complete trash all year and been bailed out by his defense. The first time he actually gets the results his pitching warrants, he throws the defense under the bus. They were legit bad last night, but Sanchez has been legit bad since the start of 2017, and is in no position to call anyone out for their play. f***ing entitled SOB he is. He isn't a starter in any league, and other GMs aren't dumb. No one is giving anything of value for him The only value he had was as a late inning reliever, I'd pick Trent Thornton over him,
Barkerfan23 Verified Member Posted May 3, 2019 Posted May 3, 2019 Moncada was a no.1 prospect, and he is only now putting it together.
Olerud363 Old-Timey Member Posted May 3, 2019 Posted May 3, 2019 Good to see Olerud is in mid season form I'm really excited about Vlad and sorry to be a downer. I am going to root for him to show us what he can do tonight. No more Teoscar Hernandez JR. Let's see some progress. Here are some things I think Vlad could do tonight to show he is learning. 1. In his wild swinging strikeout, where he swings at 4 balls, it will be nice if he can move that to 5. This would be mean he fouled off an extra pitch out of the strike zone and show some progress. 2. If he could replace his second wild swinging strikeout of the night with a called third strikeout that would be a bit of progress. Show a little patience. 3. If he could replace one of his chopper groundouts on a pitch down out of the zone, with a popup on a pitch out of the zone high, that would be great too. Get it in the air big guy!
Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted May 3, 2019 Posted May 3, 2019 Personally I think Vlad has been temporarily thrown off by bad umpiring. Roboumps can't come soon enough. The day off was a reset, nothing more.

The day off was a reset, nothing more. It does seem like he's getting squeezed early in the count and is starting out in a hole. Part of it is the pitchers hitting their spots but the umps are doing him no favors either.

I don't think it's a reset day... he was getting off days in the minors too as he was coming back from injury, it's a scheduled off day.
Maahfaace Verified Member Posted May 4, 2019 Posted May 4, 2019 Mets released D'Arnaud, he's super injury prone, but it couldn't hurt to try and sign him to a minor league deal.

He hasn't played enough to show flaws to work on. Once he is settled in as a major leaguer.. (let's say like 20 games), then maybe start trying to adjust. Right now, it would probably be counter productive. He could be just pressing a little, getting squeezed a little, and finding gloves with hard hit balls. A few of those go on and his approach will reset to his normal approach which he is already quite close to. Edited May 4, 2019 by jmomcc
BTS Community Moderator Posted May 6, 2019 Posted May 6, 2019 https://blogs.fangraphs.com/the-unstoppable-matt-shoemaker/ Pretty good article about Matt Shoemaker. Would be really nice to see him stay on the field for a full season in 2020 after everything he's been through.
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted May 6, 2019 Posted May 6, 2019 If we are going to be spending this much time on bunting, I would like to see more bunting for hits. Particularly to beat the shift!

Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted May 6, 2019 Posted May 6, 2019 I wonder how long we can run with this 3 man bench? Drury becoming an INF/OF helps. Sogard being able to handle SS helps too. If we optioned McKinney for another versatile guy, perhaps Gurriel, we might be able to run with it long term. If someone gets knicked up but doesn't go to the DL it's hard to do though.

Bobthe4th Old-Timey Member Posted May 6, 2019 Author Posted May 6, 2019 Move Maile to the bullpen full time? As fun as that would be, d’Arnaud has already signed with the Dodgers.
Maico450 Verified Member Posted May 6, 2019 Posted May 6, 2019 Move Maile to the bullpen full time? I bet we see him again. It was hard for the Rangers to take him seriously however, so this test was not much of one.
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted May 7, 2019 Posted May 7, 2019 Jonathan Davis is hitting in AAA. I read he added a leg kick to his swing. I wonder if the improvements are real due to the change in swing. He can field and run and our OF sucks ass. Might be worth giving him a chance.
