I feel like almost every report by a scout who goes to watch Vlad expects him to be bad at 3rd because of his size but they come away impressed. Almost every report i read from the AFL had good things to say about Vlad's work at 3B.

TBH I rarely trust defensive scouting reports anymore.

I disagree.

If we can move all star Smoak for something, then not only can we give Tellez a shot at 1B to start 2019 (he'll probably fail), but then the FO can justify keeping Vald down until even after June to play/work on 1B to avoid the super two thing.

And what if Tellez continues to crank it?

Man, I want Morales gone. Tellez and Hernandez could play DH until other roster moves become necessary.

And then we'd have Seager at 3B, which would be really nice.

This would be a very, very dumb idea.

Not only that, I really don't understand the doomsday attitude, like a few years of Seager means Vlad can't EVER play 3b again.

An upgrade is an upgrade. If Vlad has good hands and instincts, he'll probably be just as valuable at first (see Matt Olson, who was largely average at the plate but still put up over 3 WAR) and if and when Seager leaves, he can always return to third.

Segura + Seager, Keuchel and a few key pitching upgrades in the BP (where there are tons of great FA options) makes the Jays a pretty dangerous team.

Here's the thing about spending $20 million a year on a possible already over the hill pitcher thinking he will be around in 2 years for the next Jay's window. If you do that it makes more sense to spend an extra $10 million a year for Harper, dump Pillar's 5 million and actually get a star player who will be good for 8 of the 10 years. A guy who will also be around for the next window. Or Machado. Both 26.

Happ or Corbin if you really thing the rotation is a priority.

Harper is probably closer to 40 million per year than 30.

I'd roll the dice on Lance Lynn with a 2 years plus an option deal.....2 years 18 mil with an additional 11 mil option and 1 mil buyout. He's still relatively young for a free agent and could have some big upside.

That's just crazy...but you may be right....10 to 12 years at an AAV closer to 40 than 30 would scare the crap out of me. Too many injury issues.....he isn't a good defender today...what's he going to look like when he's in his mid 30s?

What would that cost us? I'm all for taking advantage of Seattle while we still can.

J.P. Crawford apparently.

I just don't like the idea of punting the 2019 season before it starts. We've seen teams like Oakland and TB compete in the AL largely by ensuring that everyone on the 25-man is contributing wins and not playing at sub-replacement level. With Vlad coming in April and what has become quite a deep 40-man roster, there's no reason not to try to win as many game as possible without borrowing too much from the future. Keuchel at his projected salary would allow them to do that.

Oh I agree completely. It's just that the Jim types have worn me down and I don't feel like debating the prospects of this team being competitive when we are several weeks away from spring training with more moves to come. More work will need to be done on the pitching side to avoid giving innings to sub-replacement players, I'm pretty confident on the position player side, maybe just an OF upgrade.

I think Happ will be a better pitcher than Keuchel at a shorter term and lower salary.

The Jays can do both, and I would be happy if they did.

Sign me up for a Seager/Segura combo

But you also can't turn away a clear defensive upgrade if it falls in your lap.

It's also a matter of priority. Getting these two guys without shipping out salary pretty much eliminates any chance of FA SP spending.

I don't have a strong opinion either way. I can see the FO doing it though.

But I am curious, how is it dumber than waiting until late April to call him up? It's two more months.

What would even be the reason to hold him down 2 more months? Avoiding Super-2 status? There's no way I'd endorse penny-pinching on that level.

When does it ever end?? What if he gets another minor injury just before June?? Then What?? It's July 20th and he's back... takes him a couple weeks to get in the swing a things, it's August 12th... All of a sudden it doesn't make sense to call him up for just 6 weeks...

So keep him down all year, then keep down two weeks in April, then why not two more months in 2020, so we get super two.... it never ends.

If he hadn't of gotten injured he should been called up June 14th 2018 at 11:00 a.m. and bused to Toronto for that nights game. Instead he got injured which made it stupid to call him up for 6 weeks,.

I feel we are missing out on the Mariner's tear down bargain sale.

Still a chance for Seager + Haniger I guess

Seattle receives:

Kendrys Morales ($12M)

Kevin Pillar ($5.3M proj.)

Anthony Alford

Reese McGuire

Toronto receives:

Mitch Haniger

Mike Leake ($11M)

Dee Gordon ($14M)

I'd rather take on Leake and Gordon if need be to lessen the prospect capital we have to give up for Haniger. Plus Leake fills a hole we have in the rotation.

I'll gladly take on Mike Leake and his contract.

Can't see the M's trading Haniger though -- at least not in a deal like that.

That's an awful deal for the Mariners, even compared to the ones they've already completed this offseason. Haniger isn't going anywhere without a Nate Pearson-esque prospect or better plus going back, let alone with them also taking on Kendrys' dead weight contract and giving up Leake who isn't even that expensive and is a capable league average innings eater.

You mean you'd take a .......... Leake?

I don't see much of interest on the major league roster, but I would take Leake at 2/28 if they threw in a suitable prospect. Braden Bishop would give us some nice depth if we moved Pillar.

We're dealing with a GM who took on Carlos Satanas $20M salary and almost near bust prospect JP Crawford for Jean Segura, who has averaged 4.3 WAR the last 3 seasons. And threw in a decent reliever in James Pazos to boot.

Maybe that package doesn't get it done, but I bet there's a permutation of a deal where we can get Haniger by not giving up any elite prospects.

JP Crawford is not near a bust, he did well in 2017, and had injury issues throughout 2018

He's not a bust yet, but he was borderline. He's definitely over hyped. He was ranked like a top 20 prospect the last couple of years and I don't think he'll have the hitting to be a mlber.

Carlos Santana at 2/35 (assuming the buyout is used on his team option) is not that bad, and they obviously must have valued J.P. Crawford as not near-bust, which they should given that he's not that old and projects alright for a full-time first year player, not that I agree with their reasoning or like this deal for them in the slightest.

Haniger is probably as good if not better than Segura and more importantly much cheaper. If Diaz plus Cano's albatross gets them Kelenic and Dunn who are two 50 FVs then Haniger and two substantially cheaper and shorter bad contracts is netting back way better than Alford + McGuire, not to mention dumping Morales on them. It would take something like Pearson + Biggio or Kevin Smith + Pardinho ++.

You guys see the players going on the Blue Jays Winter Roadtrip to Halifax?

2-5 as I was hoping/am strongly hoping would be traded.

I would love to see it happen and they have to scramble to find players who want to tour Canada in the winter.

Jim owns JP Crawford in a fantasy league. Any time he shows interest in a non-Jays prospect, that's why so don't expect him to be rational.

I don't think he does. I wouldn't call him a bust yet either, he's well on his way, though.
