The Cats Ass Old-Timey Member Posted June 1, 2018 Posted June 1, 2018 September? Doesn't count towards service time right?
LGBJ29 Verified Member Posted June 1, 2018 Posted June 1, 2018 September? Doesn't count towards service time right? It does count. Can we make a board sticky at the top of each page of each thread that September service time counts? I swear I've seen at least 10 different posters say September service time does not count
Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted June 1, 2018 Posted June 1, 2018 September? Doesn't count towards service time right? Yes it does. This is a common misconception and we've been through this a few times now (although I'm pretty sure Bones still thinks this as well). I too was confused on the matter. April 2019 it is!
Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted June 1, 2018 Posted June 1, 2018 I think the real question is why did this become a misconception? I was under the impression it didn't for several years. Is something that changed or has it always been this way?
Dr. Dinger Old-Timey Member Posted June 1, 2018 Posted June 1, 2018 The only difference with September is you can call-up anyone on the 40, they don't have to be on the 25. September call-ups aren't really for elite prospects whose service time you want to heavily manipulate. If they do get auditioned in September, that's just additional time that needs to be suppressed the following season to gain the extra year. September call-ups are more for tweeners, guys who you want to see what you might have. Vlad might get called up in September at some point but probably not for the entire month, for this reason. Also, he's not on the 40 man roster, so if he were to get a September call-up, another organizational asset would first need to be jettisoned (which granted, isn't necessarily difficult).
John_Havok Old-Timey Member Posted June 3, 2018 Posted June 3, 2018 Vlad with an injury after beating out an infield single yesterday. He stepped on the base awkwardly. They say it's not serious. Which probably means his career is over.

BlueRocky Old-Timey Member Posted June 3, 2018 Posted June 3, 2018 Which probably means his career is over. It was a good run. Thanks for the memories Vladdy!
saskjayfan Old-Timey Member Posted June 4, 2018 Posted June 4, 2018 Let me run that through my BS translator: "He'll be up in mid-April of 2019, on the first day his service time clock is pushed back a year". why? We aren't going to compete in 2019. May as well wait until 2020.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted June 4, 2018 Posted June 4, 2018 Vlad with an injury after beating out an infield single yesterday. He should take baserunning lessons from Robbie Cano and Edwin this off season Have to put a stop to this
Daniel Labude Jays Centre Contributor Posted June 6, 2018 Posted June 6, 2018 Vladito injured again running the bases left today's game
Krylian Old-Timey Member Posted June 6, 2018 Posted June 6, 2018 Hearing he might miss a game or two at most.
glory Old-Timey Member Posted June 7, 2018 Posted June 7, 2018 why? We aren't going to compete in 2019. May as well wait until 2020. They can hold him down in 2018 since he's been in AA for two months and still needs to work on his D. But holding back next year too, when he will most likely brutalize AAA? Not a good look. Call him up May/June 2019, and get that extra year. Use 2019 as a year where he can get some big league experience, then enjoy 2020-25 (hopefully more than that).

King Old-Timey Member Posted June 7, 2018 Posted June 7, 2018 why? We aren't going to compete in 2019. May as well wait until 2020. Agreed. Let him spend the rest of the season in New Hampshire then start next season in Buffalo. If he struggles keep him down for 2020 as well and he can get a cup of tea in 2021.

Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted June 7, 2018 Posted June 7, 2018 Faaack off... I'm not getting whooshed, like you meatheads.
Krylian Old-Timey Member Posted June 10, 2018 Posted June 10, 2018 What do you think the reaction would be if Vladdy gets injured...a significant injury... While he's down in AA? Looks like the reaction is blame the weight.
John_Havok Old-Timey Member Posted June 10, 2018 Posted June 10, 2018 Looks like the reaction is blame the weight. Yup. Strained patella tendon. Out for a month.
connorp Old-Timey Member Posted June 17, 2018 Posted June 17, 2018 What are the odds Vlad gets a Sep callup if he comes back from DL and doesn’t miss a beat? Going to Miami Labor Day (August 30- Sep 3) and wondering if I’d get lucky enough to see his first game or would they probably wait to play him at home?... if they even called him up of course.

Well, that would be pretty stupid asset management, so slim to none.
King Old-Timey Member Posted June 17, 2018 Posted June 17, 2018 It's an absolute travesty that Vlad won't play in the MLB this year. MLB needs to fix this ASAP. Teams should be promoting these top prospects as soon as they are ready.

I agree top prospects should be promoted sooner, but it seems super subjective. With Vladdy, it’s been easy for management to say that the bat is ready, but we want him getting his reps in at 3rd before coming up. Maybe the next contract would shorten the control teams have over players in the minors? Something like 3 years and then they have to be rostered or exposed to the Rule V draft?

The MLBPA will probably end up negotiating something along the lines of 5 years service time or 26 years old for free agency, whichever comes first. This would limit a teams options regarding the manipulation of service time, and get players the big contracts earlier in their careers. I also expect that they will tweak the arbitration process while also either eliminating the renew option, or changing it substantially.

Wouldn't be surprised.
