Grant77 Old-Timey Member Posted April 20, 2018 Posted April 20, 2018 I love it! I'm very excited to see Gurriel play in the bigs. Looks like Hernandez' audition will continue until JD is back as well. https://www.sportsnet.ca/baseball/mlb/blue-jays-expected-call-gurriel-jr-option-mayza-ngoepe/
Orgfiller Old-Timey Member Posted April 20, 2018 Posted April 20, 2018 Love this for Gurriel, hate it for my man Tim Mayza but I get it.

G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted April 20, 2018 Posted April 20, 2018 Go Gurriel He's been a hit machine in AA

Him being utilized as Gift was isn't ideal. Having Travis, Solarte, Diaz and LGJr is a bit of an IF logjam.

He's got experience playing everywhere in Cuba.
Grant77 Old-Timey Member Posted April 20, 2018 Author Posted April 20, 2018 It sure is nice to have too many good bats to get into the lineup instead of dreading the days when our backup brigade goes in.
BTS Community Moderator Posted April 20, 2018 Posted April 20, 2018 f*** yeah. Really excited about Gurriel. Ngoepe is where he belongs: waiting in AAA in case the team suffers an injury and needs a bench infielder for a short period.
Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted April 20, 2018 Posted April 20, 2018 I hope they put him in the lineup right away. Hes been red hot in Double-A. Travis looks awful on both sides of the ball.
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted April 20, 2018 Posted April 20, 2018 When JD comes back it might not be a bad idea to keep Gurriel and put Travis on the DL with a phantom injury just to try and give him a week and a half of rest/maintenance.

Dr. Dinger Old-Timey Member Posted April 20, 2018 Posted April 20, 2018 The policy of acquiring depth is starting to bear fruit. Tulo is a dead asset and Travis turned into a pumpkin, yet we still have several controllable MIF assets that look like they can be league average contributors. When you look at our positional WAR breakdown last season it was a fricking disaster.

Agreed. Then again, you probably won't need a phantom injury for Travis. Aledmys is getting beat up by the BABIP gods right now, but that BB% suggest he may be a lot closer to the hitter he was in 2017 than the one he was in 2016. If so - he shouldn't be plugged into the lineup every night. I see ample opportunity to for LGJ, Diaz, Solarte and Travis to all get ample playing time even when JD returns.

Travis will also hopefully turn it around soon, and go on a hot streak. But yeah, much more promising than last year.

It’s kind of annoying that this move will fly right over the heads of the casuals who were wondering why Goins was non-tendered and replaced with Ngoepe. This is why. Ngoepe can be stored in AAA until he’s needed, and then banished again. Goins’ utility ran out when his options ran out.

Yeah I mean by the time Tulo is ready again, let's be optimistic and say he's ready by August, someone else could very well be hurt and Tulo will be needed.
bones10 Old-Timey Member Posted April 20, 2018 Posted April 20, 2018 How's gurriel's defence? I see he struggled last year with the bat.

Dr. Dinger Old-Timey Member Posted April 20, 2018 Posted April 20, 2018 How's gurriel's defence? I see he struggled last year with the bat. His defense is probably going to be average to below-average. He's a bat-first infielder who's value is going to come from versatility. If he can be a league average hitter while playing passable defense in a very different positions, that's a nice asset.
Angrioter Old-Timey Member Posted April 20, 2018 Posted April 20, 2018 Jays called up two cuban guys at same time?
Horses Fart Old-Timey Member Posted April 20, 2018 Posted April 20, 2018 Gurriel in Gift out can't be a bad thing.
Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted April 20, 2018 Posted April 20, 2018 It sure is nice to have too many good bats to get into the lineup instead of dreading the days when our backup brigade goes in. Agreed. Our bench actually is really good right now. We have legit options to pinch hit. Which I can't remember the last time we had. Even our playoff teams had a terrible bench.

John_Havok Old-Timey Member Posted April 20, 2018 Posted April 20, 2018 Jays called up two cuban guys at same time? Yup. We're already at our max quota for Mexicans and Dominicans.
Dick_Pole Old-Timey Member Posted April 20, 2018 Posted April 20, 2018 This is very pleasing. It's as if this team has a strategy to win baseball that goes beyond managing the top 8 spots on the roster and then executes on this plan.
