He'll probably make the team TBH

Yeah I think he'll make it. Here's what Wilner thinks right now:

Where is Mayza? People love to point out that he's a lefty, so yeah we'll need a second lefty even though he's much better than a LOOGY.

Guys with options go down until we see who is going to suck this year.

I assume he has options and that probably has a bunch to do with it.

That said, I'd give Axford a better shot of being released than making the Opening Day roster. He's been terrible for awhile.

Clippard has reverse career platoon splits. They probably think he's competent enough vs. LHP to let them stash Mayza in AAA as depth.

We're still about a month away from the start of the season. I doubt they have a firm plan on who will round out the pen yet until they see everyone pitch for a few more weeks.

I'm very pleased with the depth being built in the bullpen. Give Axford and Clippard a shot in April, see what we have. It does no harm to have Mayza, Ramirez, Guerrieri, Biagini, etc. in the minors to start the year.

Stroman wont be ready for Opening day, and Biagini is likely part of the starting rotation. I think that is the primary driver for signing Clippard.

I think Guerreri makes the team over Axford.

Patience - he’ll get a chance.

Mayza should definitely make the team regardless if he has options. A lefty who can come into a game and get swing miss will be a nice weapon to have. Especially since Loup is insanely inconsistent. I think we could get Axford to open the season in Buffalo as a depth option. Its not like any other team in Baseball is knocking on the door to give him a major league job to open the season.

Mayza is far from a finished product and the ability to put him in AAA is a huge bonus for us. We should and will prioritize the guys with no options in an effort to preserve our depth. Atkins is too smart to do what you suggest.

Lol. The last sentence was my favourite part. Not-so-subtle jabs ftw.

With depth being a major point of emphasis, all the RP's with options left will likely be sent down aside from the locks (Osuna, Tepera, Oh, Barnes, and Loup). Might as well look to see if Clippard, Alb, etc, have anything to offer. I'm not expecting anything except major suckage out of Axford so not a big fan if he ends up making it, but then again relievers are so unpredictable that who knows who can have a good couple of months out there.

Depth is one thing but too many coin toss players is another thing... team needs more reliable players.

Except to get a reliable reliever, you have to sign them to a ridiculous contract. Hence the strategy of signing lots of cheap / minor league deals to complement prospects, and seeing who plays well.

There is also no down side to signing a reliever to a minor league contract.

Hopefully Biagini is no where near the starting rotation, when April comes.

But what ends up happening with coin toss players is somebody thinks they are ready and they are given substantial playing time to "prove" themselves... the whole time providing negative value.

I don't disagree with you. Atkins absolutely should prioritise depth. But they may actually be able to do both.

I think you should be prepared for him making 10-15 starts this year minimum.

Can't disregard the fact that relievers are completely volatile and even great ones fall apart at the drop of a hat. It's so much better to fill a pen with inexpensive lottery tickets and then fortify as needed through the year, rather than spending big on relievers in the off season.

Some people have lost their minds with this asset hording philosophy. If a pitcher with options is deemed to be the best of the lot, you don't send him down in favour of protecting against the loss of John Axford or Tyler Clippard. Especially not during this extreme buyer's market.

Asset hoarding is what makes some believe that this team has a legitimate playoff chance. Problem is, too many are ignoring the fact that the assets (especially the starting 9) are just not that good as a whole.

Short leash and kicked to the curb(DFA), is the answer here.
