Damn this better not be true but it wouldn't shock me if it is. When Shapiro made the "we would have rebuilt two years ago" quote, combined with renovations to the stadium that Rogers still hasn't approved, I can't imagine someone with Shapiro's background putting up with that s***. He doesn't need Toronto, he'd get hired somewhere else pretty easily.

 

Rogers tampered in order to hire f'n Kenny Williams and Dan Duquette four years ago. They got really lucky that Shapiro fell on their laps. I don't even want to think about who they'd get to replace him if he left.

Yeah it would. As boring as the past two seasons have been, I've had a blast keeping track of the minor leagues, seeing all the new prospects coming in, and knowing we finally have a front office ready to build from within. If Shapiro leaves, then who knows what happens, especially if Ed Rogers is behind the hiring process.

 

The bright side is the other option appears to be the Mets, and as annoying as Rogers probably is as owners, they are no where near as bad the Wilpon's. If Shapiro is so unhappy that he goes to the f'n Mets, then we have bigger problems then just him leaving.

 

Really hope Shapiro stays beyond his current contract. It's about time the Jays have a player development focused front office.

It's almost like that's their job or something.

 

Bob knows a lot of people in the industry...a lot. Who knows if someone said something to him in passing that's in the know. It's more likely that he was told something than you or I have a legitimate clue. My point is, I wouldn't be surprised at all if there's some sort of tension there. The team has been pure s*** the past 2 seasons...attendance is down...there's very little for Rogers to be happy about, so why is it so hard to believe that there would be concern and tension with the higher ups. Losing and lack of success creates animosity and frustration. It's very possible that there have been difficult discussions taking place...and I think the truth lies somewhere in that realm. Not that there's necessarily a rift, but that Rogers isn't happy...and Shapiro has heard about it from them. As he should. They're the boss...and he's the one that's going to be held accountable when things are at a low.

Meh. It really would depend on who the replacement would be. Pretty sure he's not the only exec that knows anything. Now, whether they get a good replacement is another discussion, but let's not rule out that they're able to find someone worthy to step in, if it comes to that.

I wonder if Michael Brantley will be a target. The team only really has Grichuk and Pillar that need to be on the opening day 25-man, and Shatkins and Brantley go back a long way.

I wouldn't be too sure. Signing pitchers a year or two before your competitive window has been somewhat effective for other teams. You don't want to come into the time to compete and be forced to build an entire staff. So much depends on the trade and FA markets this off-season but I can see them adding a legit starter this year.

The team’s staff is in an absolute shambles right now, and they have almost no salary committed. A 3-year deal for one or two reliable starters certainly won’t hurt their ability to compete long term, and would help prevent next year from being a complete s*** show. I really think they should and will be active on the SP market.

Yeah Toronto could maybe project to be competitive in 2 or 3 years so a mid-term deal or two for relatively young veterans might make sense.

It would be great, but I think he'll get more than that given the lack of other high end options on the market. I'd guess 5/100 min, probably higher.

There's not enough internal options to form a rotation, unless you're okay with a parade of #4/5 guys out there all year.

We need steady innings for the next couple years no matter what, and the money is there to spend right now. I don't see any reason to avoid any opportunity to add a durable, quality veteran on a reasonable deal.

 

Need to have some quality and consistency on the field regardless of whether we are truly competing in the next couple seasons.

They really do need one bankable 200 IP rubber arm - just to protect what will probably be a young and injury prone staff.

That ^ plus another depth arm would be the bare minimum.

 

Otherwise you'll just see guys like Biagini and Mark Leiter Jr. making way too many starts and blowing out their swellbows.

1. next season will be a transition year. Our focus probably will be to find out which young players we can count on in the future.

2. We don't have budget for it. We'll still be paying big $s to martin/Tulo/Morales next season but we'll have a bunch to spend the year after, I think that's when we'll make a splash in FA markets.

It doesn't have to be a big splash, but a 2 year $30M contract for Happ and 1-year deal for someone like Richards, Ryu, or Cahill should definitely be in the budget. Literally the only salary committed next year is to Tulo, Martin, and Morales.

David Paulino feels like a lynch-pin piece for the Blue Jays in 2020. Kind of need a couple of players exactly like him to become core pieces to have any chance at competition.
