AledmysDiaz Verified Member Posted May 15, 2018 Posted May 15, 2018 Hi Guys Jeff Blair on baseball central today discussed the possibility of turning Nate Pearson into a closer with Kevin Barker. The two went on to discuss how that maybe the best role for Pearson. What do you guys think? I for one would be outraged if we took an ace potentiol arm and turned him into a closer then again I don't argue to have the same expertise as a former big league and A man who has been covering baseball for 3 decades
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted May 15, 2018 Posted May 15, 2018 EDIT: Just checked.. Jansen hitting 311, IF you divide that in half (50%) at the ML level he would be batting .155 I don't know if the Jays' analytics department reads this board but if they do I'm sure you can be expecting a call about a potential job any day now.

John_Havok Old-Timey Member Posted May 15, 2018 Posted May 15, 2018 It is stupid. But isn't that essentially what we did with Fists Osuna? The difference being.... Osuna had only 129 innings of injury filled minor league ball under his belt over 4 seasosn, including a TJ surgery, so his decision was probably largely based on health rather than a lack of belief in his stuff. His numbers when he pitched as a starter were always pretty good. There's 0 reason to think Pearson needs to be relegated to a pen arm after 21 innings and a freak line drive injury
TheHurl Site Manager Posted May 16, 2018 Posted May 16, 2018 It is stupid. But isn't that essentially what we did with Fists Osuna? I don't think Pearson is the guy to do it with but I've come around on converting a prospect to relieving quicker. Bradley went from a two win starter to a 2 win reliever. Relievers are still better cost controlled in arbitration but we've seen what legit value they hold.

I see your point, yet Pearson is one of the last prospects I'd think of to make the conversion - just because he looks like the result of a lab project intended to design a durable starting pitcher.

Yeah I think SRF fits better for that kind of role. Even if it's a 2 inning 6, 7 or 8th guy. Maximize his value. Tougher to do when the team has struggling starters. I'm just saying I've come around to converting prospects to relievers while they still have options rather than after they fully fail.

Spanky__99 Old-Timey Member Posted May 16, 2018 Posted May 16, 2018 Injury updates from Shi Davidi... Tulowitzki... Diaz... Stroman... Pearce...
AledmysDiaz Verified Member Posted May 16, 2018 Posted May 16, 2018 The Marco Estrada $13M renewal, and the Jaime Garcia $8M are both looking like a waste of money. Both with FIPs over 5.5, with almost 10 starts in. Neither deserves to be in the majors anymore. Rather see a project pitcher or a long shot try to develop himself at the majors.

burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted May 16, 2018 Posted May 16, 2018 Who has more trade value at the Deadline" Donaldson or Happ?
AledmysDiaz Verified Member Posted May 16, 2018 Posted May 16, 2018 More teams can use a starter than a third baseman Right now Happ
Jimcanuck Old-Timey Member Posted May 16, 2018 Posted May 16, 2018 Who has more trade value at the Deadline" Donaldson or Happ? Oh, come on.
John_Havok Old-Timey Member Posted May 16, 2018 Posted May 16, 2018 Who has more trade value at the Deadline" Donaldson or Happ? Not sure if serious....

Pendleton Old-Timey Member Posted May 16, 2018 Posted May 16, 2018 Who has more trade value at the Deadline" Donaldson or Happ? Really?
burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted May 16, 2018 Posted May 16, 2018 Obviously you would think Donaldson but... Happ has been among the best SP and pitching is always really valuable at the deadline. Donaldson has not played well at all and even if he starts producing like we expect him to you have Machado, Moose and Beltre on the market competing with him. Of the contenders Atlanta looks like a fit if they continue to play well, maybe the Angels if they drop Kinsler and move Cozart over and the Cardinals.

Donaldson will still have more trade value unless he's season ending injured at the time. But I think what you're really saying is it will be easier to move Happ for a valuable return than it will be to move Donaldson. Close?

SSS on JD bro, he's worth the same amount on an expiring contract. Happ isn't close.
Mohammed Verified Member Posted May 17, 2018 Posted May 17, 2018 Solarte might turn into the new Jose Reyes - theatrics annoying AF when he's not hitting and playing good defense.
saskjayfan Old-Timey Member Posted May 17, 2018 Posted May 17, 2018 Why is urshela on this team when we could have just brought up biggio and put solarte at short until diaz is ready.
