I just don't remember this when I first started watching baseball, but maybe it was b/c I was less in tune when the prospects were killed.

Why not? Venezuela is an every man for himself kinda place and they intentionally caused a crash. Dead people are easy to rob, and they were. Seems to me nothing went wrong for the bad guys.
