BTS Community Moderator Posted December 10, 2018 Posted December 10, 2018 Is Harold Baines now the worst non-closer ever inducted?
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted December 10, 2018 Posted December 10, 2018 Baines is a really bad choice. Never got higher than 6.1 percent with the writers vote. Smith is also pretty bad but closers have a lower threshold.
Captain Adama Old-Timey Member Posted December 10, 2018 Posted December 10, 2018 Is Harold Baines now the worst non-closer ever inducted? Probably second to Bill Mazeroski. But to do so now, with all the information we have is goddamn embarrasing. These veteran committee f***ers need to die off already. He's never even had a 5 WAR season FFS.
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted December 10, 2018 Posted December 10, 2018 So does this mean Fred McGriff gets in now? If so does he go in a Jay?
Captain Adama Old-Timey Member Posted December 10, 2018 Posted December 10, 2018 So does this mean Fred McGriff gets in now? If so does he go in a Jay? Highly doubt it. Probably as a Brave.
Boxcar Old-Timey Member Posted December 10, 2018 Posted December 10, 2018 So basically practically anyone who played a full and relatively injury free career is a HOF these days? Harold Baines and Jack Morris are in the HoF. Not in the HoF: Jim Edmonds Kenny Lofton Larry Walker Barry Bonds Edgar Martinez Kevin Brown Curt Schilling Mike Mussina What is this

Not in the HoF: Jim Edmonds Kenny Lofton Larry Walker Barry Bonds Edgar Martinez Kevin Brown Curt Schilling Mike Mussina What is this It doesn't make any sense. Most of those guys played as long as guys like Baines and Morris, but were much better players. Baines getting elected given the information available now is ridiculous. I'd be embarrassed if I were him. Baines had ONE season with more than 3.0 fWAR.
Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted December 10, 2018 Posted December 10, 2018 Harold Baines? This is f***ing insanity.
Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted December 10, 2018 Posted December 10, 2018 Did he though? Or did he say he’d be at ST? "Agent Scott Boras has confirmed to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport that Oklahoma QB Kyler Murray will not pursue a career in professional football." I read he has to give back the $4.66M signing bonus in full to Oakland if he wants to pursue football.
BTS Community Moderator Posted December 10, 2018 Posted December 10, 2018 A few players with as many or more career fWAR than Baines: Ryan Zimmerman Aramis Ramirez Placido Polanco Alfonso Soriano Carl Crawford Hanley Ramirez Ryan Braun Torii Hunter Ben Zobrist Jose Reyes I wonder how many of them will be inducted?

Man, when you put it like that it's really f***ing hilarious.
Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted December 10, 2018 Posted December 10, 2018 Why the f*** is there a veteran's committee in the first place?
Spanky__99 Old-Timey Member Posted December 10, 2018 Posted December 10, 2018 Is Harold Baines now the worst non-closer ever inducted? Yes, so wrong.
Abomination Old-Timey Member Posted December 10, 2018 Posted December 10, 2018 Baines probably would have been hall worthy if he had been average defensively in the outfield. For crying out loud, he made Canseco look good by comparison.
Spanky__99 Old-Timey Member Posted December 10, 2018 Posted December 10, 2018 So the Winter Meetings start officially tomorrow, although everyone's there now... my body's ready.
BTS Community Moderator Posted December 10, 2018 Posted December 10, 2018 So the Winter Meetings start officially tomorrow, although everyone's there now... my body's ready. We could use some Jays news. Flipping Diaz off for Thornton isn't really cutting it.
TheHurl Site Manager Posted December 10, 2018 Posted December 10, 2018 Baines is a "we still have control of this thing, not you statsy types" vote. Led by two huge Baines proponents LaRussa (who managed him for quite a few years and has many times called him "his MVP") and Reinsdorf. Don't know who the other 10 that voted for him are but I'm guessing there is some influence. The 10 on the ballot were stupid (as is the fact that there are just 10 on this ballot). I mean Steinbrenner deserves in, Pinella I can buy it...but Joe f***ing Carter. May as well have a fan vote.
TheHurl Site Manager Posted December 10, 2018 Posted December 10, 2018 Best tweet was "if you put everyone better than Baines in Cooperstown, they wouldn't fit in Cooperstown"
Bobthe4th Old-Timey Member Posted December 10, 2018 Posted December 10, 2018 Baines' Stunning Hall of Fame Election Is an Embarrassment So I guess anymore with a 20 year career now has to get in? That’s surely the only excuse the Veterans Committee has for voting for Baines?
Spanky__99 Old-Timey Member Posted December 10, 2018 Posted December 10, 2018 Sun reporter busting Wilner's chops, lol. Man, even Jesse Barfield had more fWAR than Baines.

Don't forget Mike Cameron, Brian Giles, Matt Holliday, Jason Giambi, Granderson, Kinsler, Tony Phillips, Mark Grace, Matt Williams, Ellis Burks, Johnny Damon, Delgado, Tony Fernandez, Brett Butler, Julio Franco, Devo, David Justice, Ray Lankford, Chuck Knoblauck, Reggie Sanders, Jason Kendell, Steve Findley and Gary Gaetti Awesome! Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted December 10, 2018 Posted December 10, 2018 According to Jim Bowden of The Athletic, the Royals are close to a deal with free agent outfielder Billy Hamilton. Mike Napoli announced his retirement as a player on Saturday.
Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted December 10, 2018 Posted December 10, 2018 I was just reading who's on the Dinosaur Committee... Roberto Alomar Bret Blyleven Pat Gillick Tony LaRussa Greg Maddux JOE f***ING MORGAN John Schuerholz Ozzie Smith Joe Torre Al Avila Paul Beeston Andy MacPhail Jerry Reinsdorft + 3 media guys that I’ve never heard of (I’m shocked Jeff Blair isn’t on this). Greg Maddux is too bright to vote for Harold Baines.
TheHurl Site Manager Posted December 10, 2018 Posted December 10, 2018 and it's a different committee that nominates the 10 on the ballot. Those selections were terrible. Beyond Smith and Baines it was: Steinbrenner (I could have bought him getting in) Pinella (just one WS hurts but the record for wins in a season kind of makes up for not having a second) Hershiser (peaks were great) Belle (5 times in the top 10 MVP voting, but he's Albert) Will Clark (hall of above average) Joe Carter (LOL) Davey Johnson (If it was just for overall baseball maybe...but there are better managers and much better players) Charlie Manuel (why? Just why?)

Greg Maddux is too bright to vote for Harold Baines. Makes sense why that group would vote for him. Baines was hitting in the middle of a lineup for half the AL teams in the league for the better part of 22 seasons. Pulling that off in itself is going to impress players and other baseball types who are sure to envy a career like that. Those 22 seasons coincided with the careers of nearly everyone on the list too. The problem is he was a bad fielder/DH type who never even hit 30 homers in a season. Racking up counting stats is pretty much the only thing he ever did and he still didn't even hit any groundbreaking milestones like 3000 hits or 500 homers.

A short list of players with more career WAR than Carter includes: Carlos Pena, Rickie Weeks Jrs, Mookie Wilson, Colby Rasmus, Royce Clayton, Erick Aybar, David Freese and Pablo Sandoval.
TheHurl Site Manager Posted December 10, 2018 Posted December 10, 2018 And I laughed at Charlie Manuel because he didn't really manage that long and I hated those Phillie teams...but only one losing season out of the 12 he managed is actually pretty impressive
