i guess you could look up the careers of Marichal and Spahn, are they new to you? I hope you've heard of Willie Mays....

on the other hand you have provided the most brilliantly cynical and needlessly bitter and false post of the year to date, if that was your intent.... :D

Hang on... .do you honestly think these guys were throwing 90+ mph in the 60's for 16 innings? Chances are they were throwing low to mid 80s at best during starts at their peak. The average fastball in the 80's was 88 mph, and was over 92 as of 2014. Unfortunately there's no way to know for sure what the average was back then since they never used radar at all, but common sense tells you they don't compare to today's velo, or even the velo from 30 years ago and after 16 innings it's very likely that 75mph is not some wild guess designed to make them appear weak.

Also, yes there were great hitters in the lineups, but they were great hitters relative to their era. Pitchers then are undoubtedly "worse" then vs today's arms, but in their own era they were dominant, because as a whole, both the pitching and hitting pools were shallower than today. That's just how it is in all sports.

Mejia conditionally allowed to return from drug ban in 2019

Jul 6, 2018

NEW YORK (AP) New York Mets pitcher Jenrry Mejia has been granted conditional reinstatement from his lifetime drug suspension and could return for the 2019 season.

Mejia became the first player suspended for life under Major League Baseball's drug program in February 2016 following his third positive test for a banned steroid. He was allowed to apply for reinstatement one year later.

Baseball commissioner Rob Manfred said Friday that Mejia may participate in non-public workouts in the team's facilities after the All-Star break and will be eligible for a minor league rehabilitation assignment in mid-August. If he meets specified conditions, he would be eligible to resume all baseball activities when spring training starts in February.

Manfred met with Mejia last year, after the application for reinstatement was submitted.

"Mr. Mejia expressed regret for poor choices he made in the past and assured me that, if reinstated, he would adhere to the terms of the (drug) program going forward," Manfred said in a statement. "In light of Mr. Mejia's contrition, his commitment to comply with the program in the future, and the fact that he will have already spent almost four consecutive years suspended without pay, I have decided to grant Mr. Mejia a final chance to resume his professional career."

A right-hander who turns 29 in October, Mejia was the Mets' closer in 2014, then was suspended for 80 games in April 2015 following a positive test for Stanozolol, a drug popular among bodybuilders. At the time, he said, "I can honestly say I have no idea how a banned substance ended up in my system."

Mejia returned July 12, appeared in seven games for New York, then was banned for 162 games in July after a positive test for Stanozolol and Boldenone. The third suspension was for a positive test for Boldenone.

"I've had a long, difficult time away from the game to contemplate the mistakes I've made both with regard to my positive drug tests and also the false allegations I made about Major League Baseball's investigation into my testing history," Mejia said in a statement issued through the players' association. "Baseball is my profession, my passion and my life, and for those mistakes I am truly sorry."

A Dominican signed by the Mets in 2007, Mejia reached the major leagues in 2010 and became their closer in 2014, when he had 28 saves in 31 chances. He is 9-14 with a 3.68 ERA in 18 starts and 95 relief appearances.

He has four years, 140 days of major league service and would be eligible for salary arbitration twice before becoming eligible for free agency.

"We appreciate his regret and renewed commitment to comply moving forward," the Mets said in a statement. "We will evaluate his progress on the field and assess the situation and our options in the coming months."

Interesting precedent to set

Alex Anthopolous is at it again; it doesn't look like Carter Stewart is signing lmao.

Nice. If AA is the same old dude, then we might be able to fleece him for some prospects at the deadline. Maybe he hasn't learned from Friedman.

I was waiting for someone to respond to this, doesn't make much sense but he is now 29, not much chance at breaking through, but still... could get sticky down the road. If it were weed or something I'd understand, but everyone was PEDS???

Bautista with a walk off grand slam for the Mets. Now has a 132 wRC+. Big time bounce back for him.

Bastard plays a whole decade for the Jays and doesn't hit a single walk off HR, now, 2 months with the Mets he decides to do so.

POS.

Pretty crazy finish to the Angels/Dodgers game tonight:

Angels were down to their last strike and down 2-1 in the bottom of the 9th, with Ohtani at the plate and no baserunners aboard. He manages to coax a walk out of Jansen after being down 0-2 in the count, bringing David Fletcher to the plate. Ohtani steals second and an errant throw by Grandal sails over second base, allowing the speedy Ohtani to move to third. Fletcher proceeds to drive Ohtani in to tie the game on a seeing-eye line drive, literally just out of the reach of Chris Taylor at short.

Ian Kinsler then came up to bat and that's when this happened:

Also, is there any sideline reporter in sports sexier than Alex Curry of Fox Sports West Angels?

Yeah... it's golden. And that's a tough question?

No one tops Jenny Dell in her prime, though.

I love how Wilner keeps on saying "It's likely Bautista's last at bat in Toronto"....

The guys 37 years old, having a good year, and why would he retire if he continues it?? If trends continue he'll of had a 118 OPS + or greater every year since 2010... sometimes much greater. There is no reason that kind of hitter would retire. Things could change but Wilner is an idiot....

At least 7 teams have extended offers to the Orioles for Machado.

"The Dodgers have put forth the most enticing proposal, Encina hears, with the Diamondbacks, Brewers, Phillies, Braves, Indians and Cubs (in that order) coming in behind them. But the offers are “very close” in value, per Encina, so any of those other six clubs could leapfrog Los Angeles to land Machado prior to the July 31 non-waiver trade deadline."

Kinda hoping for Arizona given their system is trash. Anyone they get from there would fit right into the cesspool that is Baltimore

Indians are interesting.... Machado 3B, Lindor SS, Ramirez 2B, Alonso 1B whoa. If they get Machado they are right up there with the 'Stros and Yanks.

Reds TV crew attacked at least 7 in-game decisions by Maddon on Saturday, I agreed a few of them were crazy (for the little I know...) and the Cubs overcame a bad Chatwood start to win anyway

Cubs Heyward left the game described as difficulties from a foul tip taken in the groin area.

Lol Billy Hamilton against Lester is a prime time DFS play

Scores after stealing second, advancing to third on the over throw, and then taking home on a bobble by Almora

Was watching the game, didn’t recall anything like this at the time, it was announced a bit later he was not returning.

I’m cringing a fourth time now about the thought of this happening...
