Dioner Navarro Plans To Sign With Long Island Ducks

 

Free-agent catcher Dioner Navarro plans to resume his career as a member of the Long Island Ducks of the independent Atlantic League, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports. Navarro will return to the field toward the end of July, Topkin adds.

 

The 34-year-old Navarro last played in 2016, having taken the past year and a half off to help his wife through “significant health issues,” Topkin writes. In his most recent action, the switch-hitting Navarro batted .207/.265/.322 in 334 plate appearances divided between the Blue Jays and White Sox.

It'll be interesting to see. I'm not sure Happ will return a high end asset (even though he probably should), and I'd kinda prefer something like Gray to a couple wildcard guys.

 

According to many reporters, Happ may be the best SP traded this month. Most better pitchers will prob stay put after teams listen on the and decide not to bite.

I know it's a different Gray, but what about Happ for Sonny Gray, with us picking up the cost difference? We'd get a pitcher we control for a reasonable price for an extra year (and one that may have that short porch getting into his head), and the Yankees help solidify their rotation for the playoffs this year. We could always look to resign Happ in the offseason.

He really doesn't. He's been very good on the road this year (3.4 xFIP), and is a sub 4 xFIP pitcher prior to this year. He just sucks at Yankee Stadium for whatever reason. Add in the fact he's only making 6.5M this year and arbitration next year, and he could be a very real asset.

If it is noise, then it's the Yankee Stadium part rather than the road split, which is extremely close to his career road xFIP. However, his walk and k rates are dramatically and more importantly consistently worse at Yankee Stadium. Maybe it's the mound, maybe it's in his head. Regardless, I see him as a sub 4 xFIP pitcher, with upside, on a reasonable contract and an extra year of control. That's probably worth at least 15M/60 next year on the FA market, and he'll probably make about 9M unless he has a killer 2nd half.

Even if Gray is a stud in 2019 it won't help the Jays beat out Boston or New York, and if you're trading him next trade deadline, then you're hoping he pitches well enough to have as much value as Happ does now. Might as well just trade Happ for the young pieces.

We will not get a blue chip prospect for Happ. What I want is an almost blue chip prospect, ideally someone who is blocked at the MLB level. Which is why trading with the Yanks for Clint Frazier makes sense. Although we'd maybe have to add a prospect of our own. Maybe one of our one million shortstops.
