It’s a fair deal, but I’m happy it’s not Toronto. Bruce is a thoroughly uninteresting player.

The only appealing thing to me about Bruce would be if he platooned with Pearce offensively. If we didn't have Morales, Bruce would be a better fit since he can at least play a couple of positions competently and can outrun an old lady with a walker.

Whose price is going to drop enough for the Jays to sign him? Cain seems like a long shot, even though he’s probably looking at a four year deal now. JDM will get paid because Boras and because Dumbrowski. Not sure who else is worth it that’s out there. Lots of platoon bats and non difference makers.

I'm guessing scouts are more righter considering the source of the article but Kiley can f*** off because KATOH is the only scout I love.

 

Imagine you’ve a national crosschecker with 25 years of experience in the game. You kill yourself with one day at home a week for four straight months trying to learn everything about the players in your region leading up to the draft — this, after seven months of preparation scouting these players in the preceding summer and fall. Then you get in the draft room and start stacking the board as a department when a couple guys from the office who saw zero players — who don’t know how to scout and first started working for a club a few years ago — have more weight in the room than you do.

 

So this is a completely feelings based argument, gross. Why is Kiley writing for Fangraphs again? Thought he was with a team or something.

Maybe team realize its not a great idea to give a below average outfielder who likely will end up at 1st or DH a huge contract of 6+years

True. But when have bad decisions stopped GMs before. Collusion has happened before. I have no doubt it could happen again.

I wonder if the PA will fight to get years of control to drop to 5. They f***ed themselves by agreeing to the spending caps in the draft and IFA. Teams will still pay for players, they just understand the aging curve much more.

 

I think we're already seeing a trend of players (at least stars) not willing to sign away FA years on pre-arb extensions.

Source confirms: Jay Bruce back to #Mets, three years, $39 million. Deal first reported by @Jerrycrasnick.

 

Can we go trade for Brandon Nimmo now please? Lefty bat who can play all 3 OF positions. He'd be an ideal fit as out 4th OFer - someone who could platoon with Teoscar. The Mets once again have a log jam in the OF, so we might get him at a reasonable cost.

Its going to hurt guys that are basically all power guys no defensive value and strike out a lot. I don't see a lot of difference between him Chris Davis, and Trumbo. If that power ever dips and i have a feeling it will he is going to be a sunken cost.

The CBA is definitely going to have to change next time. Maybe start arb sooner, or five years of team control instead of six, or higher minimum based salaries, etc. The players are getting screwed big time in MLB.

Let's not group Mark Trumbo in with JD Martinez or Chris Davis please. His career best was a 2.4 WAR season back in 2012. He belongs in the Khris Davis category.

 

Outside of an injury ridden 2016, J.D. Martinez has been posting 4-5 WAR seasons with a wRC+ of about 145 since he reinvented his swing. Every analytics department in baseball would drool over that. The man is an elite hitter. The question is - how will he age and how much risk is there?

 

It's funny you mention Chris Davis, as he might be the reason for teams to pause. He put up 2 MASSIVE offensive seasons in 2013 and 2015 - averaging about 6.5 WAR and a wRC+ of 160. The issue with him is he was utter s*** in 2014 and has since gone from being one of the best offensive players in baseball to useless in a hurry.

 

Is JD Martinez going to be Nelson Cruz? or will he be Chris Davis? Time will tell.

Makes s*** loads of sense. I like that idea. I have wanted him since his draft year to be honest.

 

Also I am extremely thrilled Jay Bruce signed elsewhere. I wanted nothing to do with him. Not a bad deal for the Mets but still no thanks.

I have a hard time believing the players are getting screwed in the MLB when Tommy Hunter is getting paid 9 million a year

That's the perfect example of why the players are being screwed. A system so flush with money that a Tommy Hunter can be paid $9m a year because he's 31 and been around for years, but stars like Correa and Bryant are paid small fractions of their market worth because of artificially keeping contracts low in the first few years of a player's career, is a system that is at best deeply unfair, and at worst is broken.
