BTS Community Moderator Posted September 20, 2017 Posted September 20, 2017 It's 1/13 apparently. Nice. Dude took a small pay cut and avoided free agency to sign a one year deal. Either he wasn't optimistic about his market this winter or he really wanted to stay in Toronto. I guess when you've made 36M by 34, peace of mind is more important than whether you make 13M or 15M at the age of 35. Fair deal for both sides I think.
Governator Community Moderator Posted September 20, 2017 Posted September 20, 2017 Estrada and Anderson. Last year's morales and Pearce.

Fair deal for both sides I think. Yeah there are some players who want to maximize every dollar, and can't blame them for that, but Estrada clearly values comfort in this case, and it's not like he's not being compensated well at $13mm. Just a matter of how much he may have given up compared to what he could have gotten on the market, but he obviously doesn't care. 1/13 is fair. They weren't going to get a comparable starter for that much.
Governator Community Moderator Posted September 20, 2017 Posted September 20, 2017 This is why he wasn't traded. Happy to have him back.

A lot of people want the money to have a good quality of life, well in his case he feels he has that quality of life, so why risk that for an extra million , two or three...

Laika Community Moderator Posted September 20, 2017 Author Posted September 20, 2017 I don't even think Marco is only leaving a few mill on the table. He probably gets a 2 or even 3 year deal in free agency.

I think they need to get rid of this Shapro guy.. I think he's a bum stooge, and he keeps trading for (signing) these guys with crappy records, you can't win like that" On topic, thank you front office and Marco for accepting!!

Unless he falls off a cliff or is horribly injured he'll get another kick at money next OS. He's leaving it on the table, for now. Its a risk for sure, but its not a given he loses a bunch of cash by doing the 1 year thing at this point.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted September 20, 2017 Posted September 20, 2017 Sanchez Stroman Happ Estrada Not bad at all as long as at least 3/4 have decent helthy seasons How high do they aim for the 5th guy?? How much money will be spent on the SP vs corner OF and is there enough for both?? Another #2 caliber SP would look awfully good in that rotation
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted September 20, 2017 Posted September 20, 2017 Available free agent starting pitchers. Not likely any of these guys with opt-out clauses are going to opt out. Some of the club option buyouts could happen though. Brett Anderson (30) Jake Arrieta (32) Clay Buchholz (33) Madison Bumgarner (28) — $12MM club option with a $1.5M buyout Trevor Cahill (30) Matt Cain (33) — $21MM club option with a $7.5MM buyout Andrew Cashner (31) Jhoulys Chacin (30) Tyler Chatwood (28) Jesse Chavez (34) Wei-Yin Chen (32) — Can opt out of the remaining three years, $52MM on his contract Alex Cobb (30) Bartolo Colon (45) Johnny Cueto (32) — Can opt out of the remaining four years, $84MM on his contract Yu Darvish (31) John Danks (33) Jorge De La Rosa (37) R.A. jays4life19 Old-Timey Member Posted September 20, 2017 Posted September 20, 2017 Tyler Chatwood would be a peachy 5th starter in the Jays rotation.

Fair deal for both sides I think. I think Marco wants to stick with the organization that really gave him a chance to re-establish himself as a starter, and the fanbase that loves and supports him. He found support and success in Toronto that he had never experienced before and that probably means a lot to him. That and his ERA isn't very attractive this year, so he's probably getting about the same as he would on the open market anyway, maybe less a guaranteed year.
Dr. Dinger Old-Timey Member Posted September 20, 2017 Posted September 20, 2017 Ohtani plz. Imagine! Otani & J.D. Martinez would be a pretty decent off-season. I'd be okay with that. ALL ABOARD the JDM Train! I'm driving.

I'm driving. A new stud corner OF, a 4th OF, and SP 1 or 2 all in 2 signings? I'm in. An OF of Martinez, Pillar, and some sort of Pearce/Hernandez/Alford/Ohtani would sit just fine with me. Any chance we can transplant Goins' healthy legs onto Travis? Then we'd really have something going here.

Sanchez's finger is a question mark, Happ and Estrada are another year into their 30's.

Dude's career is basically over if he can't deal with the new balls.
glory Old-Timey Member Posted September 20, 2017 Posted September 20, 2017 Yeah I wouldn't count on Sanchez for 2018. Dude basically lost an entire season to a blister. He needs to prove he can avoid that moving forward before I have faith in him.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted September 20, 2017 Posted September 20, 2017 I hear you guys on Sanchez But I'm hopeful I'm not signing two SPs in addition to Estrada I'd like one legit SP 2 caliber guy that I want anyway then also sign a swing man type like Anderson or Chavez as well If Sanchez is no good in spring training the swing man gets a starting spot. If Sanchez is good to go that swing guy starts the year in the bullpen

Another #2 caliber SP would look awfully good in that rotation Biagini has a 4.17 xFIP as a starter as well and deserves to be on the list. He's had a solid year, he's mainly been unlucky because he has a 58.7% LOB% as a starter which is pretty bad. I think he can be a backend SP.
