Ray Verified Member Posted November 27, 2017 Posted November 27, 2017 Was it ever determined how much IFA spending we have left? Some were saying $1 million, while some were saying $50,000. If we're equal in everything else with the Yankees and Rangers, I'm sure he goes to the team offering the higher bonus. It might not matter much, but doesn't mean it doesn't matter at all. It's probably just lower on the totem pole for him.
Slade Old-Timey Member Posted November 27, 2017 Posted November 27, 2017 Hard to see how we could offer him something better than what the Yankees could but I still have some expectations especially considering how many people from the Jays front office went to scout him.

Yankees FO could've scouted him just as much. Don't think it makes a difference how much the Jays scout/want him. I doubt they'll be able to lure him away from other suitors.
Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted November 27, 2017 Posted November 27, 2017 Is Seattle considered a favourite simply because they signed Ichiro way back when? I realise the west coast is closer to Japan, but I have to think that's a moot point, given there are many teams on the west coast with the same advantage. Do Japanese people prefer rain or something?

glory Old-Timey Member Posted November 27, 2017 Posted November 27, 2017 After what I read about Tony Kemp and how he changed his swing in the minors, I wouldn't rule out the Astros. That team develops talent like crazy, and would be a good place for Ohtani to make adjustments. From a player development standpoint, they will be hard to top.

He has a lot of connections to former Astros too. Anthony Bass and him were supposedly very close. I thought about them but still say Cubs

G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted November 28, 2017 Posted November 28, 2017 What are the odds we could sign Darvish and Otani? Extremely unrealistic Small-ish chance we sign one or the other More likely we sign one of the mid-tier FA starters They'll sign *someone* to fill out the rotation Stroman Happ Sanchez Estrada FA starter 6th starter/swing man (might be Biagini) 5-6 other guys in the pen
Ray Verified Member Posted November 28, 2017 Posted November 28, 2017 I really hope he signs with anyone but the Yankees and Rangers really.
Slade Old-Timey Member Posted November 28, 2017 Posted November 28, 2017 I don't really see what the Rangers have to offer other than money.

Bobthe4th Old-Timey Member Posted November 29, 2017 Posted November 29, 2017 This should finally end the speculation that the signing bonus a team can give him will play any significant part in his decision on which team to sign for.
burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted November 29, 2017 Posted November 29, 2017 This should finally end the speculation that the signing bonus a team can give him will play any significant part in his decision on which team to sign for. I wonder what the value of endorsements is in Canada vs a city in the US. A positive for the Blue Jays is they are a national brand so the reach would be 35 Million more than any city in the United States. However playing for the Blue Jays would limit his endorsements down South. He would still have the Nike/UA deal but the brands like Papa Johns or other National US brands wouldn't make as much sense.
saskjayfan Old-Timey Member Posted November 29, 2017 Posted November 29, 2017 I don't understand how Ohtani could earn more in endorsements than Harper/Trout in the USA. The 20M figure must include Japanese deals. I'm pretty sure it does include Japanese deals and I think 98% of the deals would come from Japan. I was listening to someone being interviewed talking about Ohtani and they said his endorsement opportunities in Japan would likely go up if he went to the MLB.

Daniel Labude Jays Centre Contributor Posted December 1, 2017 Posted December 1, 2017 I still believe we will land Ohtani
BTS Community Moderator Posted December 1, 2017 Posted December 1, 2017 Angels feel like a darkhorse here. West coast team in a major market that hasn't experienced much success. Ohtani could vault them to instant contention, and playing with Mike Trout has to have some appeal. Maybe Eppler knew he had a legit chance when he made yesterday's trade.
Laika Community Moderator Posted December 1, 2017 Posted December 1, 2017 There are multiple Uncle Tetsu Japanese Cheescake locations in Toronto. There are only two in the entire USA - one in Hawaii and one in Arcadia, CA - 40 miles from Angel Stadium and a 30 minute drive from Dodger Stadium. Just saying. . . . .

I'm surprised the Jays haven't traded for any international money, aside from Lane Thomas a few months ago. Still not sure how much they have as some say 50k and others say one million, but either way they could afford to add a bit more.

If Otani decides to come here, they will be able to find more bonus money.
P2F Old-Timey Member Posted December 1, 2017 Posted December 1, 2017 This article was probably already posted, and heavily debated, but I found an article from Shi that says the Jays have just over a cool mil to spend on Ohtani, should he want to come here. http://www.sportsnet.ca/baseball/mlb/blue-jays-pick-scouting-otani-signing-unlikely/

P2F Old-Timey Member Posted December 3, 2017 Posted December 3, 2017 Keith Law says Ohtani has 80 speed, while Callis and Mayo have said he has 70 speed. Apparently he's 3.8 to 1st.
