TDotttt2005 Verified Member Posted May 24, 2017 Posted May 24, 2017 I think it is mean, and heartless to get people fired. I'll preface this post with that. But flip side, networks get paid handsomely for content, and in turn, the people who provide that content are equally paid well. When that content becomes stale, predictable, or unneeded, shouldnt it be replaced?? This is my argument for Wilner. Whether the Jays are 21-26, 26-21, 47-0, 0-47, you know what you'll get from Wilner. It will be early, or the team has injuries, or some obscure stat that since so and so date, Bautista has slugged .800 with a runner on 2nd, and the temperature above 19 degrees celsius, and only 9% humidity wih the roof open.... I have gained a new appreciation / disdain for Wilner since following his parody on Twitter, but it shows Wilner is actually a parody. If you know exactly what is going to happen each and every episode of a TV show, should that TV show warrant a renewal? So here and now, knowing that is not great Karma to call for someone's firing, I'm calling for Wilner's firing. He adds very little value, is a homer, predictable, and not fresh. There's a reason McCown doesnt have him on PTS. Lets get him the f out of here. Thrown enough money, we can get a Jonah Keri of someone of the like to host the show. That would be a fresh new face, and would rid our fan base of the familiar predictable banter that is Mike Wilner. #FireWilner.

guylaroche5 Verified Member Posted May 24, 2017 Posted May 24, 2017 His talk show is terrible and his breath just reeks of condescension when he gets a dumber caller. WITH THAT SAID though I like his play by play commentary and I actually kinda love it when he loses his mind over a clutch HR. I still prefer Jerry obviously but Wilner's commentary is honestly not that bad and he has a decent radio voice.

LGBJ29 Verified Member Posted May 24, 2017 Posted May 24, 2017 While I understand your point regarding his stale predictive routine, I also am not a Wilner fan, there really isnt much of an alternative. When guys like Barker, Tabler and Zaun are getting consistent air time, Wilner actually isnt even that bad in comparison to those morons. Additionally, working for a Rogers radio station, he is employed by the blue jays, who must love his constant optimism. If it were an independent radio station I could see them maybe going a different route, but I gotta imagine they're happy with his work. I actually dont mind his radio show that much. He's not that great or really that knowledgable, but he deals with so many morons I kinda get his position most of the time. His play by play commentary has a ton to be desired though, that he should never get the pleasure of doing.

His potential audience should essentially be his boss and if he isn't doing a good job, they should hold him to account. It's not like Wilner ISN'T really bad at his job and condescending to boot. He's disliked by nearly everyone, including players and coaches. He's basically a meme and regularly has people call his stupid show just to prank him because he doesn't entertain differing opinions.
Governator Community Moderator Posted May 24, 2017 Posted May 24, 2017 This thread is distasteful. That said, I really have nothing against Wilner unlike a lot of you. His play-by-play isn't thaaaat bad and he sucked a lot of co.. I mean he worked hard to get that job. If they insist on having a ridiculous post game show and take questions from a bunch of dolts then someone needs to reflect the negative spew on the radio. So it might as well be him.
Dr. Dinger Old-Timey Member Posted May 24, 2017 Posted May 24, 2017 You guys should have more sympathy for Wilner. He's getting fat and losing his hair, and his dream of being a regular play by play guy slips further from his grasp each year. He's just a jaded sports talk time filler trying to make a dime in this work-a-day world. You'd be jaded too if you aimed too high in life and instead had to deal with troglodytic reactionists s***ing all over your passion every day.

He's built a weird split-persona and it's kind of odd because a play-by-play guy should generally be a man of the people. Some are bigger homers than others but almost all of them are there to give the fans a good experience while listening to the game. Wilner does this too. I don't mind his play-by-play. On the flipside, for his post-game show he's taken on the role of a heel where he invites idiot callers on and condescendingly mocks them each and every night. It's not really for me, but if he got on there and was nice to those moron callers it wouldn't be for me either. My guess is Wilner gets pretty good ratings with his style kind of like Skip Bayless and Stephen A. Smith do in their roles as heels. But the two personas don't really mesh well at all. His heel persona really drags down the popularity of his play by play I think. But man, most of those callers are pretty retarded.

Yeah, my point was if you listen to the post-game, do you have any doubt what his 'analysis' will be. If you know he's going on Brady/Blair/Walker, do you already know what he'll say. I do play devils advocate, and say ok, he's not dealing the with most rational of fans here...the guys who want to trade Pillar for Kris Bryant, and want to fire Gibby and bring back Bobby Cox, etc. But that said, analysis that he's paid for should create value, otherwise, what is the point to the content? Granted, we all know his employer, and we know it may represent value to them, and that may fuel his fire...but to the listener, how does it provide value, other than filling up the air rather than hearing the kopley clothiers or kars for kids advertisement. Hearing guys like Keri, Nicholson-Smith, and Ennis, where theyre not totally drunk off the kool-aid, is refreshing. Wilner is stale, predicable, and maddening. And That would be if he wasnt a total dick to his callers/tweeters.
Gary Verified Member Posted May 24, 2017 Posted May 24, 2017 How are his ratings? That's all that matters.

Not Wilner specific. Buck and Pat do this all the time. I agree that this is one of my greatest annoyances. If you're going to regurgitate stats and numbers on air, for the love of god, at least make sure they're meaningful.
Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted May 25, 2017 Posted May 25, 2017 Wilner does suck but I have accepted a long time ago he's not going anywhere. He's the perfect company puppet.

They needs stats like this to kill the time.

Its not the obscure quotes that are the issue, it is his use of them. He brings up irrelevant facts to promote his narrative: that the jays and their management make no mistakes. If a guy strikes out 10 times in a row he will promote how many pitches they faced and how many hard foul balls they hit... and so on and so on, and it gets really f***ing boring. Ive been forced to listen to the radio broadcasts due to work schedule this spring and I can say that Wilner is slowly driving me nuts. Ive had to shut it off a few times just because of him. His play by play is average or below average and is not worth keeping him around.

Caper Verified Member Posted May 25, 2017 Posted May 25, 2017 My theory is that most people on this thread that are loudly complaining about Wilner, are people who have called his show in the past and got slammed by Wilner. I like Wilner. He's a massive homer and his use of sketchy stats to make his case boarders on ridiculous sometimes, but still, you really miss him when someone else tries to host his show. I kind of trolled Mike Wilner once. About 5 years ago. The point I made was so bad, that he interrupted the broadcast to mention it to the crew and say how stupid it was. I was so proud.

The man is just doing his job. And you do know he's talking on the flagship station of the Blue Jays, what do you want him to do, start doing rants against the manager or the team when the team is losing? No, he supposed to keep interest and hope in the Blue Jays high regardless of their record. That's hard to do. He's actually pretty knowledgeable too, I find, moreso than Blair at least. If you want someone who talks Blue Jays but isn't bias then you should look to podcast or you know listening to someone who isn't on the flagship station for the Jays.

I find Wilner's arrogance surpasses his knowledge. Kind of a low rent Keith Law in that respect but with less knowledge and more bias of course. Thing is though is that I haven't listened to his show in years. It used to be relevant to the kind of fan I was and now I no longer find it relevant and I don't bother listening to something that would likely just irritate me. Like you said... If you want better less biased analysis, simply look elsewhere. Heck, you can pretty regularly find less biased more thorough analysis on this very board.
