I agree I guess I just didn't like the randomness of the Smoak extension or the obsession with Zeke and Goins. However we have seen more good so far. Can't have everything I suppose. Perhaps Upton has a s***** attitude and they don't want him around.

I doubt Upton would be moved unless we get another RH bat to replace him. Coghlan/Goins and Zeke would be disastrous against LHP and they don't seem ready to use Pompey in a platoon. Hopefully Smoak has a good start and makes this a moot point.

But the other player being cut would be Goins who, as history has shown, can be DFA'd without being claimed as he's done a few times before. So there's no risk on dropping someone that can be picked

Whoever gets put on waivers probably gets claimed.

 

Goins' defence and positional flexibility is useful for a reserve infielder and late game defensive replacement (especially in the NL).

 

Upton is only paid $1million, is an OK 4th outfielder and could feasibly play well enough to have trade value at the deadline.

 

Both are very cheap, virtually risk free claims for any team looking to add to their bench.

This is mind boggling. I don't remember us being this attached to Joe Inglett or Mike McCoy. Talk about a glorified glove, Upton probably showed no interest or intensity in training leading to him being cut. I refuse to believe we cut him for going just because we preferred Goins.

He was barely an average defender last year. Like you can't even say his defense is elite anymore.. Barney is better

I fully expected Upton to make it over Goins, but I suppose the front office is worried that both Tulo and Travis are injury risks and wanted the extra infield cover.

 

Barney and Goins could both play a bit of LF I guess too.
