Gary Verified Member Posted April 1, 2017 Posted April 1, 2017 From Buster Olney: Sources: The Jays are looking at alternatives to Melvin Upton, Jr. for their roster, although they have not made a final decision. Bottom line: Melvin Upton, Jr. won't be with the Jays for Opening Day.
Gary Verified Member Posted April 1, 2017 Author Posted April 1, 2017 breaking? It is. Breaking news.
Gary Verified Member Posted April 1, 2017 Author Posted April 1, 2017 Angel Pagan would look mighty fine as a Blue Jay.
george09 Verified Member Posted April 1, 2017 Posted April 1, 2017 Heyman: "Jays r listening on Melvin Upton. Among teams that make sense: tigers, o's, rays, giants"

burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted April 1, 2017 Posted April 1, 2017 They must think Smoak at 1st and Pearce in LF is better vs LHP than Upton in LF.
GreekFatAss Verified Member Posted April 1, 2017 Posted April 1, 2017 What could we even get for Upton. Its not like he would cost anyone any money.
Laika Community Moderator Posted April 1, 2017 Posted April 1, 2017 Here is how this works... The Jays figure that the talent is about equal for all of their fringe position players (Zeke, Upton, Goins, Coghlan, others). This could include external players like Pagan. Of the players they could potentially cut, they think Upton probably is the one that might have some trade value. He does have the loudest tools, and if you squint (and ignore recent history) he's a solid 4th OF on paper. So, they tell teams that they are listening on him and/or they let it leak to an established reporter that he is on the bubble. Depending on what they can get, trading Upton might be better than keeping him and cutting another player.
Gary Verified Member Posted April 1, 2017 Author Posted April 1, 2017 I don't see Upton having any trade value.
Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted April 1, 2017 Posted April 1, 2017 If they release Upton it will be retarded. I mean he's frustrating but atleast he can do some good things. Zeke and Goins are useless players. Goins defence is completely redundant on this roster.

But the other player being cut would be Goins who, as history has shown, can be DFA'd without being claimed as he's done a few times before. So there's no risk on dropping someone that can be picked What's interesting to me is why now? Why wait until the end of ST? I'm guessing some teams have filtered their OF options by now and realize they might have a need for him? But I can't see him netting us more than another team's garbage... he would be fine if he has a platoon partner and he has good speed and decent defence off the bench. We don't have anyone other than Pillar who can naturally play CF... unless Pompey is set to be in the Upton role?

Players get hurt, minor league players appear to not be ready, etc.

fatcowxlive Old-Timey Member Posted April 1, 2017 Posted April 1, 2017 Yeah, some depth charts shrink as the season gets closer. Players get hurt, minor league players appear to not be ready, etc. True, I wonder if he would net anything useful. Maybe a BP piece, or a similarly-inconsistent outfielder for a change of scenery but even with his cheap salary I doubt we get anything of significance

Laika Community Moderator Posted April 1, 2017 Posted April 1, 2017 Having to waive Bolsinger will really hurt the depth chart, if he doesn't clear.
fatcowxlive Old-Timey Member Posted April 1, 2017 Posted April 1, 2017 Any depth SP with a pulse and an option left would maybe suffice... Yeah that's what I think we'll get. If the org is dead set on not having him anymore then anything is welcome at this point. By the way, what's up with Pompey? Haven't followed the team closely this ST but he did well in the beginning and for Canada before his concussion, is he still injured ?
Laika Community Moderator Posted April 1, 2017 Posted April 1, 2017 Yeah Pompey's concussion symptoms are sticking around. They're being very careful with him.
Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted April 1, 2017 Posted April 1, 2017 It would be nice if the front office explained these decisions instead of just leave us wondering what the f***. You don't want Upton. But you're fine with rostering Smoak, Zeke, and Goins. Atleast Upton had speed.

And this FO is actually really good at explaining things, IMO. They are very forthcoming, especially compared to AA's gibberish PR philosophy.

Smoak is just mind boggling, we are rostering 3 1B on the team with the 4th one being Bautista in emergency situations, if Pompey starts on the DL we're going to be carrying only 4 outfielders?

Pearce & Goins can play OF. Maybe part of this plan is to sign Pagan.
Gary Verified Member Posted April 1, 2017 Author Posted April 1, 2017 From Heyman: Tigers also feel fine with speedy rookie Jacoby Jones in CF. So we won't see Upton Bros. 3.0
