fatcowxlive Old-Timey Member Posted April 2, 2017 Posted April 2, 2017 I fully expected Upton to make it over Goins, but I expect the front office is worried that both Tulo and Travis But Goins is barely replacement level... I didn't even think Upton had any competition, I thought it was going to be Zeke vs. Goins. Upton must have shown up to ST with a bad attitude and poor work ethic to get him canned like that. This resembles the time we DFA'd Valencia and it came out he was a cancer here and in Oakland
Gary Verified Member Posted April 2, 2017 Author Posted April 2, 2017 Like I said, my sources tell me Upton is a problem in the clubhouse.
burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted April 2, 2017 Posted April 2, 2017 I fully expected Upton to make it over Goins, but I suppose the front office is worried that both Tulo and Travis are injury risks and wanted the extra infield cover. Barney and Goins could both play a bit of LF I guess too. Goins is a dime/dozen infielder though. Since he's been called up to the majors he is among the very worst hitters. Barney is a decent backup infielder but he can't hit enough to be an OFer.

fatcowxlive Old-Timey Member Posted April 2, 2017 Posted April 2, 2017 Also Goins is not a good outfielder at all. This is another thing with me. What happens if Pillar gets injured or needs a day off? We don't have any natural CFs, Zeke was so s*** in the games he played there. I honestly think when Pompey gets activated he's going to come up to the majors Also I can't believe we are still carrying Smoak. How the f*** are we carrying 3 natural 1Bs on the roster?
burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted April 2, 2017 Posted April 2, 2017 Also Goins is not a good outfielder at all. Goins is a poor man's Barney. He should never even see time in the OF..

Something similar happens to Bautista/Pillar and they must be more comfortable with minors depths like Coghlan and Ceciliani.

Pearce hasn't shown he can stay healthy, Bautista is really old and Pillar is going to need a couple days off.

Pearce, Morales and Bautista can all play decent 1B. I don't understand the obsession the FO has with Smoak

TheHurl Site Manager Posted April 2, 2017 Posted April 2, 2017 We are likely talking about a decision that is a 2 week decision anyway. Not a huge deal in the long run.

I don't understand the obsession the FO has with Smoak Smoak is going to start at 1B with Pearce at LF I assume. By late May, Pearce will hopefully be at 1B and we'll have a new LF while Smoak is waived.
Gary Verified Member Posted April 2, 2017 Author Posted April 2, 2017 Signing Coghlan yesterday allowed the Jays to release Upton.
burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted April 2, 2017 Posted April 2, 2017 Signing Coghlan yesterday allowed the Jays to release Upton. Not really since he can't hit LHP.
fatcowxlive Old-Timey Member Posted April 2, 2017 Posted April 2, 2017 We are likely talking about a decision that is a 2 week decision anyway. Not a huge deal in the long run. I agree but I want to understand the idea behind releasing him instead of DFA'ing him. However I do anticipate a tweet coming in the next 2 weeks along the lines of "Upton showed poor work ethic throughout Spring Training"
Gary Verified Member Posted April 2, 2017 Author Posted April 2, 2017 Not really since he can't hit LHP. Doesn't matter. Coghlan is OF depth.
TheHurl Site Manager Posted April 2, 2017 Posted April 2, 2017 I agree but I want to understand the idea behind releasing him instead of DFA'ing him. Veteran favour. He might have a specific place he wants to play (Detroit with his brother again?) instead of making him wait the week of a waiver process. Not saying this is what happened for certain but it is a somewhat common practice.
Orgfiller Old-Timey Member Posted April 2, 2017 Posted April 2, 2017 I think if anything this signals that Pearce will be getting significant OF time.
burlingtonbandit Old-Timey Member Posted April 2, 2017 Posted April 2, 2017 Doesn't matter. Coghlan is OF depth. If Pearce plays 1B vs LHP they don't have an outfielder to hit Lefties.
Orgfiller Old-Timey Member Posted April 2, 2017 Posted April 2, 2017 If Pearce plays 1B vs LHP they don't have an outfielder to hit Lefties. Either they believe that Carrera has true reverse splits (Jesus f***ing Christ) or Pearce is getting the bulk of OF starts vs LHP. Then I guess they'll do some weird s*** of Morales at first and roving DHs (Martin, Salty, Jose, JD).

Doesn't claiming a DFA'd player put the new team on the hook for the rest of the contract while releasing him make us owe him the million? Unless there's an agreement to forgo money or something
TheHurl Site Manager Posted April 2, 2017 Posted April 2, 2017 I think if anything this signals that Pearce will be getting significant OF time. At a minimum he's playing just about about everyday. Against mostly FB pitchers it's Smoak at 1B and Zeke on the bench. Against guys that throw less FB's it's Zeke in LF and Pearce at 1B. If Pearce gets hurt it's Coghlan up to face every LHP.
Spanky__99 Old-Timey Member Posted April 2, 2017 Posted April 2, 2017 Jays should put a claim in on Franklin, f*** Goins.

Unless there's an agreement to forgo money or something It is lost money. If he doesn't get claimed it's a horrible process for players. I know we aren't used to doing $1M favours but it happens in baseball. Again, I have no idea this is what happened but Jays have moved on and their inkling must have been that Upton would not get claimed.
BTS Community Moderator Posted April 2, 2017 Posted April 2, 2017 Just go get a Ryan Goins with options, Christ.
Laika Community Moderator Posted April 2, 2017 Posted April 2, 2017 Just go get a Ryan Goins with options, Christ. I wonder how much of this, if any, is interpersonal stuff. The players clearly love Goins - does that matter?
KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted April 2, 2017 Posted April 2, 2017 I wonder how much of this, if any, is interpersonal stuff. The players clearly love Goins - does that matter? I'd chalk it up to some sheepishness about Travis and some very low expectations about Upton.
TheHurl Site Manager Posted April 2, 2017 Posted April 2, 2017 Jays should put a claim in on Franklin, f*** Goins. You think he gets all the way through? Bad at all five of his defensive positions...but still would be a fit.
Laika Community Moderator Posted April 2, 2017 Posted April 2, 2017 You think he gets all the way through? Hard to see happening! But, this is the time of the year where it might.
TheHurl Site Manager Posted April 2, 2017 Posted April 2, 2017 The good news is that there are plenty of disposal pieces if opportunities come up during the season.
