John Gibbons to be Extended

Now that I'm reflecting on Gibby, I actually love everything about him aside from his strategic decisions (which can always be improved). He is lovable, hilarious, well liked by his players, stands up to s***** umpires (that drove me crazy about John Farrell), open minded, doesn't engage in s*** flinging or drama with other teams, doesn't allow his players to disrespect him or the team. I mean, I feel like a lot of his qualities are just natural and can't be learned. He can always become more savvy with his strategic decisions and I'm sure we will see him guided to be better in that area with the current FO being what it is. I'm sure it's way easier to take a naturally great people person like Gibby and mould them into a decent strategist than it is to take a saber friendly guy and turn him into a good player's manager.

This is a very good point! I feel, everyone should view Gibby through this lens. He's got the intangibles on point and is wide-open to new knowledge, it seems, so keep him as long as you can.

Everyone should prepare to see some lineups with Saltalamacchia at DH. Hopefully not as many times as last year with Navarro, especially now that we have Morales/Pearce/Bautista as options. But yeah i'm definitely expecting to see it a few times.

Best part is you can cut open the guy and he'll bleed Blue Jay blue. I like having a manager who can stay long term with a team, stability is very important

In this tenure Gibby seems very level headed but is still willing to get in guys' faces when he *has to* if they're acting unacceptably (Pillar and Lawrie hissy fits come to mind). Seems like after it's over they get over it quickly and back to business. I think that's just how a manager should be... play hard and do your part and all will be good, but you'll be called out if you act like an idiot or undermine him.

People on here need to stop evaluating managers as if they're players. IMO what's more important than being a good strategic coach is being one that can fully motivate a team, keeps people in line as well as prevent conflicts. Every man on the 25 man roster has more impact to a team's performance than a manager's strategic decision. I'd rather have Gibby than some guy who might lose the clubhouse but is able to put a good hit and run play on.

Pretty nice to see Gibby get this sort of respect after his unceremonious exit from his first tenure in 08. How often do guys come back from the grave with the same franchise to then make their mark? Players, yeah, but managers? I can't think of one off the top of my head.

Even more odd is that he didn't manage an MLB team during his time away from the team, how often do you see a manager who's essentially one and done? Let alone come back to the team who hired him lol

Here is the thing i am of the honest belief that Manager will win/lose you no more the 2-3 games a year. Even the worst manager in the league (Dusty lol) i would bet would only lose you 2-3 games a year based on in game calls.

 

As in Sometimes bunts with runners on works for you sometimes it makes you look stupid and you get nothing out of it. I would rather have a manager that is even keel that players actually like playing for and works with Management. If you have a manager that people that is a supposed good in game tactician but players don't really like is that accomplishing anything?

Yeah but Martin was pretty successful with the Yankees off the bat and his tenure was more like a high school rom com. Gibby was pretty much a footnote in Jays history, came back from the dead, and is now sort of a folk hero. (Until the inevitable team slump, of course.)

Probably because Gibbons seems a lot less stubborn than many old school managers and might be able to mold his managing style to what the front office wants. Combine that with the players liking him, and they might feel a managerial change isn't necessary.

 

The man needs to learn how to use a pen properly, among other things, but I wasn't offended by much of what he did in 2016 as opposed to 2015. If the new front office has rubbed off on him, then it's probably a solid move to keep some continuity.

I think lots of fans are quietly realizing they were wrong about Shapiro. The initial thought was he was gonna fire Gibbons and blow up the team and we're gonna become a penny pinching team that plays small ball exclusively... this is completely the opposite of what has happened. I don't think there was a better way of taking over an organization than what Shapiro did

It's easy to hate some of the moves Gibby does at times but really the same frustrations can be said about almost any manager. I've come to really like his laid back personality, I think he handles this team as good as anyone and his post game interviews are great. Not to mention he's very gif worthy.
