GreekFatAss Verified Member Posted March 21, 2017 Posted March 21, 2017 I don't know how you could call Gibby a yes man when he gets in the best players face for being an idiot. Too many would just bend over and take it.
devo Verified Member Posted March 21, 2017 Posted March 21, 2017 I think he and Donaldson got in to it once as well. Some of these are barely worth mentioning. If i remember correctly Gibby was just trying to get a sniff of Donaldson's cologne haha

Ah yes, those back to back ALCS appearances he was a part of just reek of mediocrity.
Dick_Pole Old-Timey Member Posted March 21, 2017 Posted March 21, 2017 For those complaining. The grass is always greener... Three more full seasons and Gibbons passes Gaston as the team's most tenured manager. If those three seasons average a few games over .500 then winningest manager as well.

I don't think I've seen that word since before the ALCS appearances. Used to see it daily.

Off topic - but I can't begin to tell you how much I dislike that term - it's an American English word that just sounds so stupid and would never be used this side of the pond. I use Americanisms all the time, but I draw the line at that one!
Boxcar Old-Timey Member Posted March 21, 2017 Posted March 21, 2017 This is great. Gibbons might be my favourite personality on the Blue Jays. Certainly top 5. I don't really care if he's a good tactician, as long as he's not a bad one. I've come around pretty hard to the idea of a "clubhouse manager" being very important. Yeah, I'm just imagining this team with someone like Bobby Valentine instead of Gibby and that would not go over well. He drives me crazy sometimes, but I think it's pretty clear the players all get along with him but he doesn't let them walk all over him like, say, Matt Williams in Washington. He slaps them down when they get out of line while not dwelling on it. Seems like a genuinely good dude.

Grant77 Old-Timey Member Posted March 21, 2017 Posted March 21, 2017 It's funny how the person doing the hiring influences some people's opinions more than the hiring itself. I've noted on multiple occasions how similar (or the exact same in this case) moves that are praised now were widely panned under JPR or AA. Anyways, I like this move. It had to be done really considering our success in the past 2 seasons and his good relationship with the players.

Sammy225 Old-Timey Member Posted March 21, 2017 Posted March 21, 2017 I think it is important to note here that Gibbons would not of left Britton with a thumb up his ass in the pen

GodDonaldson Verified Member Posted March 21, 2017 Posted March 21, 2017 Will he manage this team until he goes into his coffin?
GodDonaldson Verified Member Posted March 21, 2017 Posted March 21, 2017 Gibby did show improvment in the post season this past year so hopefully he keeps that up What do you think about Russell Martin keep batting 5th for the Blue Jays during the ALCS when he sucked a lot?
Terminator Old-Timey Member Posted March 21, 2017 Posted March 21, 2017 Another good thing about Gibby is that he handles all these dust-ups really well. We almost never start s*** (at least in my biased opinion) and he prefers our guys go out and win the game or homer off the pitcher for retaliation. Our pitchers sometimes will bean someone back but it appears to be right in the back where it should be. In other words, he's not a clown like Bannister.
Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted March 21, 2017 Posted March 21, 2017 My only real gripe with Gibby is his usage of Osuna. I will give him credit for putting Donaldson in the 2-slot and benching Smoak for being terrible even after his extension when it probably wasn't a popular move in the organization. That extension was just a complete f*** up though. Came out of nowhere.

He used Osuna pretty well in the playoffs, but yeah I can remember a few times in the regular season he used Osuna in unnecessary situations. Lets not forget though, everyone's favorite manager Joe Maddon overused Chapman in the World Series and it almost cost them game 7.
