Spanky99 Old-Timey Member Posted March 13, 2017 Posted March 13, 2017 I think it's absurd. You're correct, it's absurd.
Governator Community Moderator Posted March 13, 2017 Posted March 13, 2017 When a team averages at least 1 hit per inning it gives them a pretty clear advantage by putting runners on for them. I don't understand it.
Laika Community Moderator Posted March 13, 2017 Posted March 13, 2017 Help teams with the better offense? I think it helps teams with higher strikeout skill pitchers. They have to have some type of stupid rule. Can't have teams playing long games in this tournament...

Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted March 13, 2017 Posted March 13, 2017 Columbia needed to play an almost perfect game. Putting them in that situation was a death sentence. So far the road team has won in all the games with this new rule.

Yup, it puts all the pressure on the home team, it's a stupid rule.
Stangstag Old-Timey Member Posted March 13, 2017 Posted March 13, 2017 not only that but it shifts the momentum to the visiting team. Morale is a very real thing. Exactly. The home will almost always start their half of the inning down by at least 1 run.
Dick_Pole Old-Timey Member Posted March 13, 2017 Posted March 13, 2017 Exactly. The home will almost always start their half of the inning down by at least 1 run. http://www.nssl.noaa.gov/users/brooks/public_html/feda/datasets/expectedruns.html 63.6% of the time according to these stats gathered 20+ years ago. These stats are skewed upward given that there are a lot of early inning data in here that won't be subject to strategic pitching changes.
Stangstag Old-Timey Member Posted March 13, 2017 Posted March 13, 2017 No. Since there are multiple ways to approach the inning, it helps the team that knows how many runs they need to score (the home team). It would greatly increase the value of high strikeout relievers, as NJH says. I don't agree with that idea at all.

TheHurl Site Manager Posted March 14, 2017 Posted March 14, 2017 You are being ignoring my main question. They answered no. It's equal. My only question is has no one ever played a tournament with these rules? All tournament playoff games for as long as I remember were settled this way. In youth ball I think every road team ends up starting with a bunt.

I can't remember ever being in a ballgame with this rule.
KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted March 14, 2017 Posted March 14, 2017 Even when you played? I can't remember ever being in a ballgame with this rule. Me neither. Obviously it's been awhile but I feel like I would remember something so weird.

Pendleton Old-Timey Member Posted March 14, 2017 Posted March 14, 2017 We used the rule growing up in fast pitch tournaments and still use it for my men's league in the tournament and playoffs (regular season games just end in ties).
TheHurl Site Manager Posted March 14, 2017 Posted March 14, 2017 Even when you played? I can't remember ever being in a ballgame with this rule. I'm maybe mixing up my slo pitch days and my baseball days. I don't remember any long marathon games though. I started running the Green and Gold in 2007 and I know we've had at least 3 extra innings semi-finals & Finals all settled this way.
TheHurl Site Manager Posted March 14, 2017 Posted March 14, 2017 Found the history of the rule. Put in for the 2008 Olympics, Baseball Canada (and all the PSO's) put it in for the 2009 season. Someone in the comments on the ESPN page said that fastball started using the rule in the 80's.
Arjun Nimmala Vancouver Canadians - A+ SS It's been slow going at the start of the season for Nimmala, but on Sunday, he was 3-for-5 with his 3rd home run and 3 RBI. Explore Arjun Nimmala News >
