Dr. Dinger Old-Timey Member Posted March 5, 2017 Posted March 5, 2017 Makes sense. He could be a pretty good utility guy.
Laika Community Moderator Posted March 5, 2017 Posted March 5, 2017 Gregg Zaun @GreggZaun Why would anyone competitive be interested in Brett Lawrie, it's not a contest in athleticism, it's baseball!!
Gary Verified Member Posted March 5, 2017 Author Posted March 5, 2017 Gregg Zaun @GreggZaun Why would anyone competitive be interested in Brett Lawrie, it's not a contest in athleticism, it's baseball!! Wow! Zauny is on his game today!
Gary Verified Member Posted March 5, 2017 Author Posted March 5, 2017 IIRC Gibby wasn't a fan of Lawrie's immaturity.

I know the data doesn't show it but he looked like a very good defensive 3rd baseman from what I saw of him. Barney and him backing up the infield would be ok with me. Better than Goins.
Jonn Old-Timey Member Posted March 5, 2017 Posted March 5, 2017 Bring in Lawrie and Pagan Let Goins and Zeke go Oh and get rid of Smoak
Abomination Old-Timey Member Posted March 5, 2017 Posted March 5, 2017 I'm all for this. I think he's a good fit with us, and would be very low risk / high reward.
Key22 Verified Member Posted March 5, 2017 Posted March 5, 2017 He's a better offensive player than Smoak. He can probably be a better first baseman and a back up at second and third. That alone should make him a consideration. Depends on how the regulars feel about him. Is he more of a headache than he's worth?

We need athleticism in the outfield with Bautista in RF. Lawrie would be ok to back up 3B just in case, but no way i let his middle infield butchery play out for any extended periods. On that note, let's hope Travis' defense has improved (specifically going to his right).

Pendleton Old-Timey Member Posted March 5, 2017 Posted March 5, 2017 I wonder if Lawrie's lack of success has humbled him into a better teammate/pro.
wamco Verified Member Posted March 5, 2017 Posted March 5, 2017 That's not how people like him typically operate. Most likely his struggles are "someone else's fault"

glory Old-Timey Member Posted March 6, 2017 Posted March 6, 2017 Pagan is a clear upgrade in the outfield, and the Jays are interested in this douche? I mean, I guess he makes sense to back-up Donaldson at 3B in case of injury, and Travis at 2B when Devon goes on his 3 month trip to the DL, but is Lawrie even better than Barney at this point? Now if they sign Pagan AND Lawrie, and replace Zeke and Smoak, then we're talking. IMproves the team and more versatile bench. Don't see that happening though.
Brownie19 Old-Timey Member Posted March 6, 2017 Posted March 6, 2017 Gregg Zaun @GreggZaun Why would anyone competitive be interested in Brett Lawrie, it's not a contest in athleticism, it's baseball!! Shockingly - Zaun's a f***ing idiot. Laurie's worst season is equal to Smoak career season (in terms of WAR). Money is the only reason we wouldn't want to dump Smoak and take on Lawrie. Given the health of JD and Travis - this seems like a no brainer. Shatkins said they wanted to get faster, more versatile and younger. Lawrie checks all 3 of those boxes....although he's a douche.

Rumours are out the Jays are interested in both Pagan and Lawrie. Those 2 really would solidify a very deep roster heading into the season.

Abomination Old-Timey Member Posted March 6, 2017 Posted March 6, 2017 Rumours are out the Jays are interested in both Pagan and Lawrie. Those 2 really would solidify a very deep roster heading into the season. They really seem like they don't want to sign Pagan, but are keeping the possibility open. They keep mentioning things like wanting to keep the competition open, etc. The thing Lawrie would offer is the potential to cover infield and outfield positions in a super util role (I see no reason he couldn't handle LF capably, if he can resist the urge to run into Pillar or the walls while chasing flies). Barney works well as a defensive replacement / pinch runner who can cover SS as well. I'm not sure he'd excel in an expanded role in the event of a major injury.
SaskJaysFan_2 Verified Member Posted March 6, 2017 Posted March 6, 2017 Bring in Lawrie and Pagan Let Goins and Zeke go Oh and get rid of Smoak I totally agree. Travis and JD are sort of hurt. Lawrie covers them nicely with a higher ceiling that Barney and Goins, and has some pop. Pagan has been pretty solid in the OF. Cut Smoak. Pearce at 1B please. Hell, Lawrie at 1B please. Hell, Morales and 1B please. Hell, Tellez at 1B please. Hell, JB at 1B please. And so on.

There is talk Pagan would accept a minor league deal. I have seen contracts where it is agreed the player will be released if not on the MLB club by May 1st, and so on. That makes sense here. Give him a long ST, since he will be starting late. Unless he is working out with a college team, or a Mexican team or something.
Gary Verified Member Posted March 6, 2017 Author Posted March 6, 2017 The ladies will love having Lawrie back with his rock hard abs.
