as I said he's a HOF'er and a great hitter one of the best I've seen...but he was not a better baseball player than the 10 guys I named. I guess you could say that I take more away for being a horrible horrible fielder than I do Edgar for not being a fielder. Question is should Manny be punished for the fact that he wasn't made a DH early in his career which led to him to accumulating the second biggest negative defensive statistics.

The answer to your question is no. Not in his case. No idea how you can prefer Hoffman over him personable

Joe didn't use peds....so hardly a comparison

You say this, like you know for a fact. I don't wish to open this up because I don't know for sure, we never will, nor does it matter. That being said, you don't think its possible that some of the "old time" player's, used things to gain an "advantage". Maybe a stimulant here or there, a greenie or something.

I think there has to be at least the possibility considered. There may have been some player's doing whatever they could, to gain an advantage, since baseball was invented.

I didn't bring up the players "used things" to gain advantages as it maybe true however obvious abusers of the rules on a list for the hall of fame and comparing a admitted PEDs user like Ramirez to Joe is ain't right. And all the rest of Cheats do nothing but encourage cheating and I don't care what his numbers are..... oh and brownie quit using that line its getting old

The BBWAA Hall of Fame voting results will be announced today at 6:00 PM ET.

Coverage will begin at 3:00 PM and finish at 7:00 PM and will be carried on both MLB Network and MLB.com.

Using Ryan Thibodaux's ballot tracker, The Hardball Times have projected five new Hall of Famers in 2017:

And its preliminary forecast is great news for those who believe the 10-vote limit has created a harmful backlog of deserving players on the ballot. The 163 ballots collected in the BBHOF Tracker as of Jan. 3 augur a record-tying year for the Hall. Although the numbers below can and will change, as of this writing, the model forecasts that five players—the biggest class since the very first one in 1936—will be elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame: Jeff Bagwell, Tim Raines, Iván Rodríguez, Trevor Hoffman and Vladimir Guerrero. Almost as notably, Edgar Martínez, Barry Bonds and Roger Clemens will see significant (~20-point) jumps from their 2016 support, putting them in line for eventual election. Meanwhile, Curt Schilling’s support will slip noticeably, and Lee Smith will drop off the ballot in his 15th year of eligibility. Although Jorge Posada will be a close call, the model currently does not expect any serious candidates to fall beneath the five percent support threshold.

Blech, Hoffman.

Hoffman was getting in eventually. Whether it's now or later is inconsequential. Raines was out of time. That's what's important here.

Also in the spirit of the Hall of Fame, here is a FanGraphs piece from two weeks ago that looked at the hall of fame cases for active players.

Of special note, Josh Donaldson is only one 7-WAR season, two 5-WAR seasons and four 3-WAR seasons away from crossing the 70-WAR threshold and becoming a no-doubt, borderline-first-ballot hall of famer. It's almost ridiculous to consider given how young his career is, but Josh Donaldson has already put up a top-25 peak of all time (would slide in under Utley on that list).

Extend him. I want more Jays caps in the hall.

I hope all the guys polling 70 percent or higher get in. Otherwise they just get in next year anyways and the logjam of votes continues.

Damn, that would be f***ing awesome to see JD get in.

I want him in the HOF as a Jay. Halladay will definitely get in with a Jays hat. I don't think Bautista will have a shot, but having 3 Jays would be great

Is Halladay a sure bet for the hall?

Edgar Martinez starts his career late, has a season cut short by the strike, finishes with 10+ more WAR over his career, while being a significantly better hitter (and even a better base runner) and doesn't get in over Vlady?

Utter. f***ing. stupidity.

I'd like to think so. There have been worse in the HOF than him no? Two time CY Young winner, 8x all star and has a postseason no hitter is a pretty good resume.

Martinez was very good but also played DH the majority. DH don't get you the old man vote. Plus Vlady > Martinez all damn day.

Vlad a first ballot HoFer and Larry Walker isn't even getting close. What a joke. Hoffman is horrible. Is he the worst Hall of Famer? He's got to be up there.

Except David Ortiz is going to be a first ballot Hall of Famer. With 15 less career WAR than Edgar.

The argument is legit. Martinez is extremely underrated.

Thankfully, guys like Jay Jaffe have finally started getting heard and there's been significant progress made throughout baseball on this year's preliminary polling.

Then again... Larry Walker is polling at 20% on the progressive ballots despite having a career 140 wRC+ and 69 career fWAR. lol.

Except Vlady probably should have DH'd for most of his career because he was f***ing horrific in the field. Edger > Vlady all day long bud. Get your weird eye checked.

Wait seriously, how the f*** is Larry Walker on his 7th year on the ballot? For some reason I was under the assumption that he was a bat-only guy with bad defense.

http://www.fangraphs.com/statss.aspx?playerid=455&position=OF#fielding

140 wRC+, 230 SB, defensive runs in the positives. 11% BB, 15% K. Batting average above 300.

He is the #27 OF of all time. He has better numbers than Tony Gwynn.

Wait 5 years and Ortiz will get in.

Guys like AJ Pollack, Carlos Gomez and Lorenzo Cain have already had peaks higher than David Ortiz. The only thing I can say about Ortiz is he's had a pretty big impact on the game (couple of WS with the Red Sox after 100 year drought, DR influence....f***, I don't know).
