And unlike the OF we have no real depth in the minors to draw from next season either. We need to get Nunez or Kendrick and maybe even both. Or at least one would be good and then make an effort to get a good bench player who can play SS. Can't count on Tulo or Travis at all.

Gurriel may well be ready next season.

Gurriel may well be ready next season.

TSN today:

4. 2B/SS Lourdes Gurriel Jr.

Affiliate: Double-A New Hampshire Fisher Cats

Age: 23 (10/19/1993)

Midseason top 100 prospect rankings: Baseball America (90)

Projected MLB ETA: 2018

Season stats: .197/.217/.258 with 1 HR, 8 RBI, 1 SB in 66 AB at High-A; .286/.321/.416 with 1 HR, 12 RBI, 1 SB in 77 AB at Double-A

Two games at shortstop, two at second base and one as the designated hitter. That’s how Gurriel Jr. split his week as the Blue Jays continue to emphasize versatility with the prized Cuban signing. It didn’t seem to bother the right-handed hitter in the box as he’s got five hits in his last three games heading into play Wednesday night. At some point, Gurriel may see time in the outfield, too.

Yeah forgot about him. I'd like to see us sign Nunez and start him in the OF and move him to the IF when Travis or Tulo gets hurt. Then when the other gets hurt we could bring up Gurriel. Would be nice to have an ace defensive UT guy too. Goins and Barney at least used to be good defensive players but that's faltered along with their bats this year.

Yeah that's a good plan.

Barney is a UFA so he won't be back. Goins has 3 years remaining of control so he'll probably still be here as a bench player, until either Travis has an injury free season, or we replace him.

Then if they think Refsnyder is worth keeping as depth, he has an option remaining.

So Goins enters arb then right? He won't be dirt cheap anymore so maybe they'll finally just cut the cord. He's been the 13th worst player in the big leagues since he debuted and the fourth worst over the past two seasons. He needs a new profession.

It's very frustrating that him coming up through the system has earned him a roster spot for multiple years by default. He's an absolutely terrible MLB player, and doesn't even deserve a bench position on an MLB team.

Yeah arbitration, but he's not going to get much. It's probably wishful thinking to see him gone. I was convinced they'd get rid of him this year to keep Upton and it didn't happen.

Gurriel will be on our squad next year, I agree we need another one of these guys you've mentioned.

Edit: Should've kept reading... :P

I will buy a Go Go "Players Weekend" jersey and where it during every game next season if they cut him during Players Weekend.

All good brother. The mistake was on my part.

Yeah seriously. Other than one good half season in 2015, he's been utter trash for years and years. Not sure what the hell two front offices see in this guy, especially the current one that looks at advanced stats.

Does anyone know if Pittsburgh will play in Toronto NEXT year? My son really wants to see the pirates but I don't think we'll be able to make it this weekend.

Is there a pattern or anything with interleague play to give me an idea? Thanks.

I don't believe there is any sort of pattern to it so it's hard to say if we'll play Pittsburgh. The odds probably aren't good but I'm not positive.

Each division in the AL plays a differnet division in the NL each year, with each team also assigned a "natural rival" that they play every year.

Toronto's natural rival is Atlanta, and obviously this year they're playing the NL central(they've played Milwaukee, STL, CIN and have upcoming games with Pittsburgh and the Cubs), so it's very unlikely they'll be facing the NL Central again next year.

I'd like to see it but I feel this team will try to put together some marginal attempt at contending and Gurriel won't be on the team until September...barring injuries

Depending on how you define "core", I agree. I mean, if your core is like... 6 players, I have no doubt that we have a very solid 6 player core... If your core is 20 players, I'm a bit less bullish on that.

Do you want to pay him what he's gonna get on the open market though? That's the only question that matters.

You do it this off season or it won't happen

Jesus - just when I thought he'd come out and say JD is a egotistical primadonna and I can't wait to trade him...
